Our picks by use case
Best overall: Canon PIXMA G4280 MegaTank
The G4280 is the most balanced choice when you print family paperwork, school work, forms, and occasional photos. Duplex printing reduces manual paper handling, and the GI-21 system uses pigment black with dye-based color. Canon listed GI-21 bottles at about $22.99 for black and $14.99 for each color on its accessories page. The related G3290 advertises up to 6,000 black-and-white and 7,700 color pages in default mode, but Canon’s store page now says that model is no longer available. Treat the G4280’s current stock and exact specifications as a purchase-time check.

Best budget tank: Epson EcoTank ET-2800
Choose the ET-2800 when low upfront cost and inexpensive color refills matter more than office convenience. Epson lists up to 4,500 black and 7,500 color pages for 522-series replacement ink; its ink page showed a $17.99 black bottle around the checking date. It prints, copies, and scans, but lacks automatic two-sided printing, an automatic document feeder, Ethernet, and a larger paper tray. Those omissions make it a poor fit for frequent multipage office work.
Best home office: Epson EcoTank ET-3850
The ET-3850 uses the same 522-family yield claim as the ET-2800 while adding the features that make regular work less tedious: automatic duplexing, a 250-sheet tray, Ethernet, and an ADF. Pay more for it when you routinely scan or copy multipage documents or print enough that reloading a small tray is annoying.
Best feature-rich color option: HP Smart Tank 7602
HP’s 7602 combines a 35-page ADF, duplex printing, touchscreen controls, and substantial bottles. HP documentation lists approximately 6,000 black pages for HP 32XL and 8,000 color pages for HP 31 supplies. HP’s comparison methodology estimates about 0.4 cents per black page and 1.7 cents per color page for Smart Tank, versus roughly 4–10 cents and 8–20 cents for conventional cartridges. These are HP’s estimates, not independent measurements, and actual use depends on coverage, cleaning, and paper.
Best refill convenience: Brother INKvestment Tank 580 or 780
Brother’s keyed bottles are designed to fit the correct tank and reduce spills; Brother says refilling takes about 65 seconds. Its announcement lists approximately $19.99 for black and $11.59 for each color high-yield bottle, with up to 7,500 black and 5,000 color pages. The 580 and 780 were announced at $299.99 and $379.99 MSRP, respectively—not guaranteed current selling prices. Select the 780 when its additional office-oriented features justify the premium.

What “cheap ink” really means
Compare ownership cost, not just a bottle on a shelf. A useful planning formula is:
Effective cost per page = (printer price + replacement ink used during ownership + maintenance supplies) ÷ pages printed.
- Bottle price: the amount paid at refill time.
- Ink cost per page: bottle price divided by the manufacturer’s rated yield.
- Printer cost per page: the purchase price spread across your expected pages.
- Included ink: valuable, but claims such as “two years” assume a specified usage level. Canon’s G3290 example used 200 pages per month.
- Hidden consumption: setup and printhead-cleaning cycles use ink; paper, failed pages, and replacement printheads also affect cost.
- Subscriptions and accounts: check whether setup or mobile features require registration, internet access, or ongoing fees.
Advertised yields are not guarantees. Manufacturers use their own standardized patterns and settings. Full-page graphics, photos, high-quality modes, duplexing, cleaning cycles, initial setup, and one color running out first can change the result. Epson specifically warns that all colors can be consumed for printing and maintenance even when a page appears mostly black and that actual yields may vary substantially.
Choose by monthly volume
Under 50 pages
A basic cartridge printer or monochrome laser may cost less overall because a tank printer’s higher purchase price takes longer to recover. Choose a tank at this volume only when color is important and you accept periodic maintenance.

50–200 pages
An ET-2800, MegaTank, or Smart Tank can become attractive, especially with regular color use. Compare the complete printer price with genuine bottle prices rather than assuming an immediate payback.
200–500 pages
A midrange tank with duplexing, an ADF, and a larger tray—such as the ET-3850, HP 7602, or Brother 780—is usually more practical than an entry model.
Over 500 pages
Consider a business-oriented tank or a monochrome laser for text-heavy work. Speed, paper capacity, and maintenance downtime can outweigh a fraction-of-a-cent ink difference.
Match the printer to the work
- Black text: Pigment black improves crispness and water resistance. A monochrome laser is often faster and tolerates long idle periods better.
- Mixed documents and worksheets: Four-color tanks offer the strongest low-cost balance.
- Photos: Do not infer photo quality from bottle yield. Check ink colors, borderless sizes, paper support, banding, and cost per photo. A six-color model such as Epson’s ET-8550 can produce better photos than a four-color office tank, but its purchase price is much higher.
- Envelopes and labels: Confirm the exact media path and supported sizes in the manual.
- Multipage scanning: An ADF is a major time saver; the ET-2800 does not have one.
Features worth paying for
- Automatic duplexing: Prints both sides without reinserting sheets.
- ADF: Processes multipage scans and copies in a stack.
- Ethernet: Provides a stable home-office connection when Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- Larger tray: Reduces reloads during regular printing.
- Separate pigment black: Usually better for sharp, more water-resistant text.
- Replaceable printheads: Can extend service life, but verify replacement cost and availability.
- Touchscreens and apps: Improve convenience but do not directly lower ink cost; apps may require accounts, permissions, or internet access.
Maintenance and failure risks
Tanks mean fewer refill events, not zero maintenance. Fill each color carefully, keep bottles stored as directed, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and ventilation guidance. Long idle periods increase the chance of clogs or cleaning cycles. Print a small color test periodically only when consistent with the model’s guidance. A color tank may stop a job when one color is empty, even if black remains.
Rank #4
- STRESS-FREE PRINTING — Epson EcoTank comes with enough ink to print up to 6,600 pages black/5,500 color¹⁰ for fewer out-of-ink frustrations. Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to about 80 cartridges¹¹
- SIMPLE INK REFILLING — Supersized ink tanks and uniquely keyed EcoFit bottles make refilling ink simple—no mess, no stress and no ink bottle mix-ups
- THE WORLD’S #1 SELLING SUPERTANK PRINTER² — Epson invented EcoTank to revolutionize the way people print; we’ve sold 100 million EcoTanks worldwide⁷ and this is our 7th generation of cartridge-free printers
- ADVANCED PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES — Fast 15 black/8 color ISO ppm print speeds with zero warmup time, built-in scanner, 100-sheet paper tray, auto duplex printing and a 1.44" color display for easy navigation
- STUNNING PRINT QUALITY — High 4800 x 1200 dpi print resolution for exceptional photos and text; enjoy amazing image quality on a wide range of media
Genuine ink is the safest choice for predictable color and warranty coverage. Epson warns that non-genuine ink can damage the printer and that resulting damage may not be covered by its limited warranty. Third-party bottles can be cheaper but add leak, clogging, color, and support risks.
When a laser printer is the better “cheap printing” choice
If nearly every page is black text and color is rare, compare a monochrome laser. It is generally faster, does not dry out like liquid ink, and is comfortable with long periods of inactivity. A color laser can suit high-volume business graphics but typically has a higher purchase price and different consumable economics. Conventional cartridge inkjet printers remain reasonable for very low volume when the printer itself is heavily discounted.
Buying checklist
- Estimate pages per month and the share that is black, color, or photo.
- Calculate ownership cost using the printer price, genuine bottle prices, yields, and expected years of use.
- Confirm the exact model number and ink codes; similarly named regional versions can differ.
- Verify duplexing, ADF, tray capacity, Ethernet, media sizes, and print speed.
- Check whether the listing is new, refurbished, discontinued, or sold by a third party.
- Confirm U.S. warranty coverage, return policy, and ongoing availability of genuine bottles.
- Recheck price and stock immediately before ordering.
Who should buy each model—and who should not
| Model | Buy it if… | Look elsewhere if… |
|---|---|---|
| Canon G4280 | You want duplex color printing and a versatile all-in-one. | Current availability or bottle supply is uncertain. |
| Epson ET-2800 | You want the simplest mainstream tank at a lower entry price. | You need duplexing, an ADF, Ethernet, or office speed. |
| Epson ET-3850 | You scan, copy, and print regularly at home. | You need heavy-duty business throughput. |
| HP Smart Tank 7602 | You value an ADF, touchscreen, and low claimed color costs. | You print so little that tank savings cannot offset the premium. |
| Brother 580/780 | You prioritize clean, quick refills and document workflow. | You mainly print black text; compare a Brother laser instead. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Are tank printers always cheaper than cartridge printers?
No. Tank printers usually reduce replacement-ink cost, but a higher purchase price, low page count, maintenance ink, and wasted prints can make a cartridge printer cheaper for very light use.
Can advertised yields be compared directly between brands?
Only cautiously. Each manufacturer uses its own test conditions, and coverage, quality setting, cleaning, duplexing, and color mix change real-world results.
Will a tank printer clog if I do not use it?
Inkjet printheads can clog or require cleaning after long idle periods. Follow the model’s maintenance guidance and do not assume any brand is maintenance-free.
The Bottom Line
For most households and home offices printing regular color documents, start with a refillable tank: the Canon G4280 is the broadest all-round option, the Epson ET-2800 is the economical basic choice, and the ET-3850, HP 7602, or Brother 780 better suit multipage office work. If your workload is mostly black text or only a few pages each month, price a monochrome laser or inexpensive cartridge printer before paying the tank premium.
