Samsara is the best overall GPS tracking platform for most mid-size and enterprise fleets because it combines live vehicle visibility, safety, cameras, diagnostics, routing and integrations. Verizon Connect is stronger for established field-service operations, Geotab for data and integrations, Motive for trucking and ELD workflows, and Azuga for smaller fleets that want published pricing and driver-reward programs.
This guide covers commercial vehicle and asset tracking—not consumer phone-location apps. “GPS tracking software” usually includes a telematics device, cellular service and operational tools, so compare the complete system rather than a map subscription alone.
Quick comparison
| Platform | Best for | Tracking and operations | Hardware approach | ELD/HOS | Dashcams | Maintenance | Public pricing signal | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsara | Integrated fleet operations and safety | Live visibility, routes, safety, diagnostics, assets, reporting and integrations | Vendor-supported telematics hardware ecosystem | Available configurations; verify exact plan | Available | Available | Quote-based; see official site | Can be excessive for a tiny fleet; greater vendor lock-in |

1. Samsara: best overall integrated platform
What it does
Samsara combines live vehicle visibility, trip and route monitoring, driver-behavior events, AI dashcam workflows, diagnostics, asset tracking, maintenance reporting and integrations. Its positioning as an all-in-one platform is described by Samsara and third-party coverage from TechRadar.
Best fit
- Mid-market and enterprise fleets wanting one operating system.
- Companies combining cars, vans, trucks, trailers and equipment.
- Managers who need safety coaching, cameras and operational reporting together.
Hardware, price and limitations
Deployment normally uses Samsara-supported telematics hardware, with vehicle and asset devices selected for the fleet. Pricing is generally quote-based; request a configuration showing device charges, cellular service, installation and contract term. The platform may be too costly or complex for a five-vehicle business that only needs location and geofencing, and proprietary hardware can make switching more difficult. Do not treat vendor-published satisfaction or ROI figures, such as those in Samsara’s comparison report, as independent proof.
2. Verizon Connect: best for established and field-service fleets
What it does
Verizon Connect focuses on near-real-time location, driver behavior alerts, dispatch, routing, dashboards, maintenance and fuel visibility. Those tools suit service businesses that must coordinate technicians, vehicles and customer appointments rather than merely watch dots on a map.
Best fit
- Established commercial fleets with dispatch or field-service teams.
- Businesses needing configurable reports and operational dashboards.
- Organizations already comfortable with a structured implementation process.
Price and limitations
Pricing is quote-based and varies with fleet size, hardware and selected features. Third-party coverage notes that final cost depends on configuration (TechRadar review). Compare installation, cancellation, data retention and add-on charges carefully. A smaller operator may get better value from a simpler tracker.

3. Geotab: best for data depth and integrations
What it does
Geotab’s open platform provides real-time GPS, live maps, trip history, exception alerts, basic routing, maintenance scheduling, inspections, work orders, dashboards and access to a marketplace with more than 400 partner solutions, according to its software-packages page.
Important package distinction
Geotab says GO Core includes basic fuel-economy visibility. The GO Plan adds fuller fuel monitoring, including idling analysis, fuel transactions and fleet-wide fuel insights. Confirm the exact device, plan and partner integration in writing; “open platform” does not mean every module is included.
Best fit and limitations
Choose Geotab when your fleet has internal IT, analytics or integration requirements, especially across mixed vehicles and assets. Reseller-led implementation and configuration can be more work than a small business needs. Geotab’s buyer guidance recommends evaluating contract length, pricing flexibility and future fleet needs (buyer guide).
4. Motive: best for trucking and ELD workflows
What it does
Motive centers on commercial trucking workflows: GPS tracking, driver and vehicle management, ELD/HOS-related tools, safety, dashcams, compliance reporting and trailer or unpowered-asset tracking. Older articles may call it KeepTruckin; current branding is Motive.

Best fit
- Interstate or regulated carriers needing documented driver workflows.
- Fleets combining ELD, cameras, vehicle tracking and trailer visibility.
- Operations where inspections, hours-of-service and safety are central.
Limitations
ELD capability is not automatically required for a local plumber, electrician or landscaper. Obtain a quote for the precise vehicle, ELD, camera, asset and contract configuration, and verify that it meets the rules applicable to your operation. Compliance software does not transfer the legal responsibility for determining whether federal, state or local requirements apply.
5. Azuga: best for small-fleet pricing signals and driver incentives
What it does
Azuga combines GPS tracking, notifications, geofencing, driver scores, rewards, reports, maintenance and efficiency tools. Its official pricing page lists BasicFleet at $25, SafeFleet at $30 and CompleteFleet at $35 per vehicle per month.
Pricing qualification
A separate promotional page advertises GPS from $19.99 per month and explicitly excludes AI dashcams. Treat $19.99 as a promotional starting signal, not an all-in guaranteed rate. Verify fleet-size bands, hardware, installation, cellular service, contract and any camera or storage fees.
Best fit and limitations
Azuga is attractive to a 1–25 vehicle business that wants visible pricing and a driver-reward program without immediately adopting a broad enterprise ecosystem. Higher-end analytics, cameras or compliance workflows may require more expensive tiers. It may not match Geotab’s integration depth or Samsara’s breadth for large, complex fleets.

Best choice by fleet and industry
| Need | Most logical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One integrated safety and operations system | Samsara | Combines tracking, cameras, diagnostics, safety and reporting. |
| Field-service dispatch and mature reporting | Verizon Connect | Strong dispatch, routing and service-operations orientation. |
| Analytics, APIs and partner integrations | Geotab | Open architecture and large marketplace. |
| Trucking, ELD and HOS workflows | Motive | Designed around commercial-driver and compliance processes. |
| Small fleet with public pricing and rewards | Azuga | Published tiers, scoring and incentive tools. |
| Maintenance management first | Fleetio plus a telematics provider | Fleetio manages maintenance and operations; live GPS generally requires a connected provider. |
Fleetio: useful alternative, not a native GPS substitute
Fleetio’s pricing page displays $4, $7 and $10 per vehicle per month for Essential, Professional and Premium when billed annually; Essential is shown at $5 with monthly billing. It also advertises a 14-day trial without a credit card. The platform is maintenance-first—inspections, work orders, inventory and vehicle costs. Independent coverage says real-time GPS generally requires connecting a separate telematics provider (TechRadar). Budget for that provider’s hardware, cellular subscription and integration separately.
What “GPS tracking” can include
Before comparing products, define the functions you actually need:
- Visibility: live or near-real-time location, breadcrumbs, route playback, geofences and arrival/departure alerts.
- Driving behavior: speeding, idling, harsh braking or acceleration, driver identification and coaching.
- Vehicle health: diagnostics, odometer and engine hours, preventive maintenance, inspections, work orders, fuel and idle reporting.
- Operations: dispatch, route optimization, driver messaging, mobile apps and customer ETA links.
- Compliance: ELD/HOS logs, DVIR, IFTA and audit exports where applicable.
- Video and assets: dashcams, AI event review, trailers, containers, generators and equipment tracking.
- Data: APIs, accounting/CRM/fuel-card integrations, exports, user permissions and retention.
“Real time” is not necessarily second-by-second. Ask for the normal update interval, alert latency and what happens when cellular service is unavailable.
Hardware and total cost
Hardware may be OBD-II, hardwired, vehicle-powered, battery-powered or specialized for unpowered assets. GPS determines position, but cellular service normally transmits that position to the platform. Remote fleets should ask about carrier coverage, offline buffering, upload after signal restoration, roaming and alternative connectivity.

Build a five-part cost model:
- Software subscription per vehicle, asset or user.
- Tracker, camera, ELD or battery-device charge.
- Cellular connectivity and video-storage fees.
- Installation, activation, replacement and deinstallation.
- Contract commitment, add-ons and renewal increases.
Third-party estimates place many hardware-inclusive enterprise platforms around $25–$60 per vehicle per month, but these are not universal prices and vary by hardware, features, term, fleet size and geography (Stackscored; Btracking).
Contract and privacy questions to ask
- Is the agreement month-to-month, annual or multi-year?
- Are hardware and service billed separately, and who owns the device?
- Are activation, installation, shipping, replacement or deinstallation charged?
- What happens when a vehicle is sold or removed, and can an unused license transfer?
- What are cancellation and early-termination fees?
- Are cellular service, API access, historical data, reports and additional users included?
- Does the price rise after a promotion, and which modules are add-ons?
- How long is the hardware warranty, and what is the replacement price?
- Does tracking continue off hours, who can view location or video, and how long is data retained?
- Can you export data and retrieve it after cancellation?
Tracking employees and recording driver-facing video can raise notice, consent, employment and privacy issues that vary by jurisdiction. Set an off-hours policy, access controls and retention rules with appropriate legal advice.
Quick Recap
Common buying mistakes
- Comparing subscription rates without hardware, cellular and installation.
- Treating a promotional price as a standard, all-in rate.
- Buying ELD features when only basic GPS alerts are needed.
- Assuming a maintenance system supplies native live tracking.
- Choosing an incompatible device or failing to test coverage.
- Assuming every “real-time” service updates continuously.
- Overlooking API, export, cancellation and historical-data terms.
- Selecting a dashboard without testing dispatcher and driver workflows.
- Accepting vendor accuracy, savings or safety claims as independent evidence.
A practical decision tree
- If you need an integrated tracking, safety, camera and operations suite, request a Samsara quote.
- If dispatch and field-service productivity are central, compare Verizon Connect.
- If APIs, analytics, mixed assets and partner applications matter most, evaluate Geotab.
- If you operate regulated trucking and need ELD/HOS workflows, start with Motive.
- If you have a small fleet and want visible pricing plus driver rewards, price Azuga.
- If maintenance is the primary problem and live location can come from another provider, evaluate Fleetio with that telematics integration.
