Tipping in India is discretionary, and the official tourism guidance available varies by place and service; it does not set a single nationwide rate. Before adding anything to a hotel or restaurant bill, check whether it includes a service charge: under the consumer guidance reported by India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs in 2022, hotels and restaurants may not add one automatically or by default. A tip is separate from that charge.
Who should I tip in India?
There is no uniform national tipping rule in the official sources cited here. Puducherry Tourism describes tips as customary for several hospitality roles, including waiters, porters, guides and drivers. West Bengal Tourism gives different advice for taxis, guides, drivers and restaurant service. Treat these as local tourism guidance, not a countrywide obligation.
- Restaurant and hotel staff: A tip is discretionary. Check the bill for a service charge before deciding whether to leave a separate tip.
- Porters: Puducherry Tourism names porters among roles for whom tipping is customary, but does not give a nationwide amount.
- Taxi drivers: West Bengal Tourism says visitors are not expected to tip taxi drivers. That is local advice, not a national rule.
- Guides and drivers: West Bengal Tourism offers context-specific suggestions; the figures and their limits are explained below.
- Other services: The official guidance cited here does not establish expectations or amounts for every service, including salon and delivery work.
When should I tip?
Tip when you choose to recognize service; the tourism guidance presents tipping as customary in some settings, not compulsory. For restaurant and hotel bills, first distinguish a tip you choose to give directly from a service charge printed on the bill. The latter is subject to central consumer guidance and cannot be added automatically or by default.
Local tourism advice also differs by setting. Puducherry Tourism’s undated FAQ says tourist restaurants or hotels often add a 10% service charge and suggests only a few rupees in smaller places. This is not a current nationwide rule: check the actual bill and apply the later central guidance on automatic charges.

How much should I tip?
No named national study, official nationwide average, or uniform tip rate is established by the official material cited here. The figures below are recommendations on state tourism pages, not measured national norms; their publication dates were not established in the reviewed material.

Is a service charge mandatory in India?
No. A Ministry of Consumer Affairs press release dated 4 July 2022, summarizing Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) guidelines, says a hotel or restaurant cannot add a service charge automatically or by default. It also says establishments cannot collect it under another name, compel payment, or restrict entry or service based on whether a customer pays. The charge must be clearly presented as voluntary, optional and at the consumer’s discretion. Read the Ministry’s 2022 guidance.

What to do if it appears on your bill
- Check the itemized bill to see whether a service charge has been added automatically.
- If it has, ask the establishment to remove it. The Ministry says consumers may request removal when a charge is levied contrary to the guidelines.
- If the issue is not resolved, the Ministry lists the National Consumer Helpline at 1915, the NCH mobile app, a Consumer Commission, the District Collector and the CCPA as complaint routes.
The Department of Consumer Affairs also described service charges as voluntary in a 2017 release, but the later 2022 CCPA summary is the more relevant guidance for handling a restaurant or hotel bill. See the 2017 release for historical context.

Together, they support treating tips as discretionary and checking bills rather than assuming one percentage applies everywhere. They do not establish a national average or a general expectation for every kind of service.
