Tim Cook is scheduled to step down as Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, but he is not leaving Apple entirely. Apple announced that Cook will become executive chairman of the company’s board, while John Ternus is scheduled to become CEO. As of August 18, 2026, Cook remains Apple’s CEO and the handover has not yet taken effect.

What “retirement” means in Tim Cook’s case

The answer depends on which role “retirement” refers to:

  • Retiring from the CEO role: Yes. Cook is scheduled to leave that position on September 1, 2026.
  • Retiring from Apple: No. He is scheduled to remain with Apple as executive chairman.
  • Retiring from corporate life altogether: Not established. His announced Apple role indicates continued involvement, but Apple has not described his broader plans outside the company.

That distinction is why both “Cook is retiring” and “Cook isn’t retiring” can be misleading without qualification. The precise description is that he is stepping down as CEO while remaining at Apple.

The official Apple succession timeline

  1. April 20, 2026: Apple announced that Cook would become executive chairman and that John Ternus would become CEO. Apple’s announcement says the transition was unanimously approved by the board.
  2. Through the summer of 2026: Cook remains CEO and works with Ternus on the handover.
  3. September 1, 2026: Ternus is scheduled to become CEO, and Cook is scheduled to move into the executive-chairman role.

The announcement date and the effective date are separate. Apple disclosed the change in April, but the CEO switch is not scheduled to occur until September 1.

Who will replace Tim Cook?

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, is scheduled to become CEO on September 1, 2026. Apple cited his product knowledge, leadership, character and focus on creating products when explaining its confidence in him.

Ternus has spent approximately 25 years at Apple and has led Hardware Engineering since 2021. Bloomberg had identified him as a leading internal successor before Apple formally confirmed the appointment in April. That earlier reporting was succession speculation at the time; Apple’s announcement is the formal decision.

What will Cook do as executive chairman?

Apple has confirmed that Cook will become executive chairman of its board and will assist with aspects of the business, including engagement with policymakers around the world. He is also expected to support the transition to Ternus.

Bloomberg reported that Cook told employees he was healthy and planned to remain executive chairman for a long time. That is a report of his stated intention, not a guaranteed tenure or a published end date.

Apple has not provided a complete schedule or job description for the executive-chairman position. The available announcement therefore does not establish that Cook will continue running daily operations, retain CEO-level authority, choose products or act as a “shadow CEO.”

What changes on Apple’s board?

The transition also changes board leadership. Arthur Levinson, who served as Apple’s non-executive chairman for 15 years, is scheduled to become lead independent director on September 1, 2026, while Cook becomes executive chairman.

This means the change is broader than replacing Apple’s chief executive: the company is also adjusting how its board leadership is structured.

Why John Ternus was selected

Apple’s public rationale centers on Ternus’s long experience inside the company and his leadership of the organization responsible for Apple’s hardware engineering. His appointment is an internal promotion rather than an outside hire, providing continuity in the succession process.

Neither Apple’s announcement nor the cited reporting establishes how Ternus will change Apple’s strategy, product roadmap or risk tolerance. Those outcomes remain questions for the period after he takes office, not confirmed consequences of the appointment.

What remains unconfirmed

  • Cook’s precise day-to-day schedule as executive chairman.
  • How frequently he will participate in operational decisions after September 1.
  • How many years he will remain in the chairman role.
  • Whether Apple’s strategy, products or financial performance will materially change under Ternus.

Apple’s announcement establishes the roles and date, but it does not promise a fixed duration for Cook’s chairmanship or describe the boundaries of every responsibility.

How long has Cook been Apple CEO?

Cook became Apple CEO in 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs. The scheduled September 1 handover would end roughly 15 years as the company’s chief executive.

What readers should check after September 1

This article’s status is tied to the announced schedule. As of August 18, 2026, Cook is still CEO and Ternus is not yet CEO. After September 1, coverage should verify that the handover occurred as announced and switch from future-tense wording to the confirmed post-transition roles. Apple’s announcement specifies the date but not an intraday time for the change.
