For the fiscal quarter that ended December 27, 2025, Apple recorded $85.269 billion in iPhone revenue, up from $69.138 billion a year earlier—an increase of approximately 23.3%.
The result shows an exceptionally strong holiday period, but it does not reveal how many iPhones Apple sold or which individual model led the lineup.
What Tim Cook said
Apple’s January 29, 2026 earnings release quoted Cook describing the iPhone’s performance as its “best-ever quarter,” driven by “unprecedented demand.” Apple also said iPhone revenue reached all-time records in every geographic segment. Apple’s official results release did not use the phrase “simply staggering.”
That stronger wording came from Cook’s CNBC interview, reported by MacRumors. Cook said demand exceeded Apple’s expectations and characterized it as “simply staggering.” That is Cook’s description, rather than an independently measured industry metric.

The numbers behind the claim
| Measure | Fiscal Q1 2026 | Year-ago comparison | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone revenue | $85.269 billion | $69.138 billion | +$16.131 billion, approximately 23.3% |
| Total Apple revenue | $143.756 billion | Not stated in the cited quarter summary | Apple reported 16% year-over-year growth |
| iPhone share of total revenue | Approximately 59.3% | Not stated | Calculated from Apple’s reported figures |
The exact category figures appear in Apple’s fiscal Q1 2026 consolidated financial statements. Apple rounded total quarterly revenue to $143.8 billion in its release and reported 16% overall growth.
Which period did the quarter cover?
Apple’s fiscal first quarter of 2026 ended on December 27, 2025, and the results were announced on January 29, 2026. In calendar terms, this was the final quarter of 2025 and included the holiday shopping season.

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
That distinction matters: “Q1 2026” is Apple’s fiscal label, not the first three months of calendar 2026. It is also the first full holiday period after the autumn iPhone launch, so the timing naturally captures launch-season upgrades and holiday purchases. The available results do not quantify how much demand came from gifts, promotions, upgrades or first-time buyers.
Which iPhones drove the performance?
Apple broadly attributed the result to the iPhone 17 family, identified in the coverage as:

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- iPhone 17
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 17 Pro
- iPhone 17 Pro Max
Neither Apple’s release nor the cited financial statements identify the best-selling model or provide a model-by-model sales split. It is therefore not supported to say that the Pro Max, or any other single version, drove the quarter.
Record revenue is not the same as record unit sales
Apple reported revenue, not the number of iPhones shipped or sold. A 23.3% increase in iPhone revenue could reflect a combination of:
Rank #4
- More units sold;
- A higher average selling price;
- A larger share of premium or Pro models;
- Foreign-exchange effects;
- Changes in carrier promotions, financing or geographic mix.
Apple does not disclose unit sales or model-level iPhone revenue in the cited results. The defensible conclusion is that iPhone revenue reached a record and Cook said demand exceeded expectations—not that Apple sold a known percentage more phones.
How unusual was the quarter?
The December quarter’s $85.269 billion in iPhone revenue was about 74% higher than the $49.025 billion reported for Apple’s September 2025 quarter. That comparison spans different seasonal periods: the September quarter generally precedes the holiday peak, while fiscal Q1 includes it, so it is not a clean sequential growth measure.

For broader context, Apple reported $209.586 billion in iPhone revenue for fiscal 2025, compared with $201.183 billion in fiscal 2024. The holiday quarter therefore represented a substantial share of the full-year total, while also exceeding the prior-year December-quarter figure by approximately 23.3%.

Apple said the iPhone set all-time records across every geographic segment. That wording refers to Apple’s reporting segments; it does not establish that every individual country or market set a record. The financial statements provide company revenue by region, but not separate iPhone revenue for each region.
What the results do—and do not—prove
- Established: iPhone revenue reached $85.269 billion in the quarter ended December 27, 2025.
- Established: Revenue was approximately 23.3% above the year-ago quarter.
- Established: Apple called it the iPhone’s best-ever quarter and said every geographic segment set a record.
- Attributed characterization: Cook called demand “simply staggering” in a CNBC interview.
- Not disclosed: Total iPhone units, model-by-model sales, the leading model, market-share gains, and the contribution from specific promotions or buyer types.
If you are considering an upgrade
Apple’s reported demand does not make one model the right choice for every buyer. Compare current devices and financing at Apple’s iPhone store, and check the live value of an older phone through Apple Trade In. AppleCare+ coverage varies by model and plan.
Carrier installment credits can change the effective price, but offers from AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile may require an eligible plan, qualifying trade-in, new line or specified installment term. Verify current terms before buying.
The Bottom Line
Cook’s “simply staggering” remark referred to demand during Apple’s fiscal Q1 2026, which ended December 27, 2025. Apple’s $85.269 billion of iPhone revenue supports an exceptionally strong holiday quarter, but Apple has not disclosed unit sales or a model-level winner.
