TikTok’s China Wholesale Claims: Are Birkins and Birkenstocks Real?

A factory tour, low price, or shared-materials claim does not establish that a TikTok Birkin or Birkenstock is genuine. Here’s what brand disclosures and TikTok Shop rules can—and cannot—tell you.

There is no reliable basis for assuming a TikTok “factory-direct” Birkin or Birkenstock is genuine. In reporting published April 16, 2025, Forbes quoted a luxury-strategy professor calling the viral claim that exact branded goods can be bought straight from factories for a fraction of retail “grossly misleading or false.” Birkenstock separately said the products and factory shown in one specific video were not its own. That does not prove every product in every video is counterfeit—but a factory tour, low price, shared-materials claim, or logo is not proof of authenticity.

What the TikTok wholesale videos claim—and what the evidence says

Forbes reported that creators promoted Chinese factory-direct offers during the 2025 tariff debate, including footwear presented as Birkenstock, leggings presented as Lululemon, and Chanel products. One Wang Sen video had more than 6.1 million views when Forbes published its April 16, 2025 report; Forbes said the video had since been taken down. That is a view count at the time of publication, not a current metric or evidence of purchases. Forbes’ report quoted Pepperdine University luxury-strategy professor and Équité founder Daniel Langer: “The viral claim that the exact same products are available directly from these factories at a fraction of the price is grossly misleading or false.”

An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may produce goods for a brand. That fact alone does not show that a separate seller is authorized to sell branded stock, or that its goods are the same products made for the brand. The maker of an item, the brand controlling its design and marks, and the seller offering it are distinct questions. A seller’s claim that a factory supplies a brand does not establish the item’s provenance.

Material similarity is not enough either. Forbes quoted menswear writer Derek Guy describing a video maker’s claim that his bags were like Hermès because they used the same materials, then comparing it to claiming that spaghetti matches a Michelin-starred chef’s because both use tomatoes and flour. Materials do not establish the workmanship, origin, authorization, or identity of a branded item.

What the brands say about where their products are made

Brand disclosures can help test a seller’s story, but they are not authentication tools for a particular item. A product’s stated country of manufacture does not prove that it is genuine, and supplier geography does not identify the source of a viral listing.

Brand or group Published manufacturing or supplier information What it does—and does not—establish
Birkenstock Forbes quoted chief communications officer Jochen Gutzy saying Birkenstock footwear is made in the European Union, primarily Germany. On the specific video Forbes discussed, Gutzy said: “The video in question does NOT depict a BIRKENSTOCK supplier warehouse. Instead, the products shown are knockoffs and the factory featured is clearly NOT ours so the claims in the video are false.” Forbes, April 16, 2025; Birkenstock newsroom. The company’s response addresses that video and its claims. It is not a finding about every Birkenstock listing or every product on TikTok.
Hermès Hermès’ current corporate disclosure says 75% of its objects are made in France, including 100% of its leather-goods articles. It lists overseas production sites in Switzerland, Italy, the UK, the US, Portugal, and Australia. Hermès, “Our exceptional objects” (accessed October 4, 2026). This describes the company’s production at the scope it states; it does not authenticate an individual Birkin or seller’s offer.
Lululemon A Lululemon spokesperson told Forbes: “Lululemon does not work with the manufacturers identified in the online videos and we urge consumers to be aware of potentially counterfeit products and misinformation.” Forbes also reported that the company’s supplier list included manufacturers in mainland China. Forbes, April 16, 2025. Suppliers in China do not verify that a particular seller, factory, or item is connected to Lululemon.
LVMH brands LVMH reports supplier geography by purchasing volume as Europe 65%, North America 17%, Asia 16%, and rest of world 2%; by supplier count, Europe 61%, North America 15%, Asia 19%, and rest of world 5%. LVMH, sustainable sourcing (accessed October 4, 2026). These are group-level supplier figures, not the country of manufacture for a specific Louis Vuitton or Dior item, and not evidence that a TikTok seller is authorized.
CHANEL CHANEL’s US FAQ says handbags and shoes are made in France and Italy; small leather goods in Italy and Spain; espadrilles in Spain; and knitwear in France, Italy, and Scotland. It says authenticity is guaranteed only for purchases from a CHANEL boutique or authorized retailer. CHANEL US FAQ. CHANEL’s stated guarantee is tied to the purchase channel; the origin list is not a way to authenticate an item offered elsewhere.

How to evaluate a suspicious offer

  1. Check the exact claim against the brand’s own information. Look for manufacturing disclosures or statements about the specific video or seller. A mismatch can undermine the story; a country match cannot prove authenticity.
  2. Verify the seller, not just the product story. Check whether the seller is a brand boutique or an authorized retailer. CHANEL says it guarantees authenticity only for purchases through its boutiques or authorized retailers. A logo, warehouse footage, or certificate image by itself does not establish authorization or provenance.
  3. Ask what is actually being sold. An unbranded lookalike is different from a counterfeit that uses protected brand marks or is presented as a branded product. TikTok Shop’s US intellectual-property policy prohibits counterfeit and knockoff products as well as unauthorized third-party marks; it also identifies displaying unauthorized marks, hiding a logo, and content implying counterfeit sales as prohibited conduct. TikTok Shop US Intellectual Property Policy (dated July 16, 2026).
  4. For pre-owned luxury resale on TikTok Shop US, check the platform’s specified documentation process. TikTok’s guidance for specified pre-owned luxury bags, luggage, accessories, and footwear says a seller generally must provide an approved Certificate of Authenticity within 24 hours after an order is placed or the order may be canceled. Select sellers can request one through TikTok’s Legitmark workflow, or upload an approved existing COA. This is a seller-side requirement for covered resale categories, not a universal authentication service for videos or new wholesale offers. TikTok Shop US pre-owned luxury guidance (October 30, 2025).

TikTok’s policies describe rules and enforcement, not proof that every questionable listing has been caught. The company said it prevented 37 million products from being listed for policy breaches and removed 133,000 individual products after listing in the second half of 2023. Those platform-reported enforcement counts are not an estimate of counterfeit prevalence. The cited sources do not establish an independently measured current counterfeit rate for viral factory-wholesale offers. TikTok Shop Safety and Transparency Report, second half of 2023.

What the available evidence cannot tell you

Forbes’ article records company comments, expert views, and the status of one video as of April 16, 2025. The brand pages describe company-reported manufacturing or sourcing at the stated scope; they do not independently authenticate goods. TikTok Shop’s cited rules and resale process are US-specific, dated guidance that can change. None of the cited figures—video views, enforcement actions, brand production shares, or supplier geography—can be used to calculate how common counterfeits are or to determine whether a particular offer is genuine.
