TikTok officially sells Coins through its website in supported countries as well as through Apple’s in-app purchase system. That does not, by itself, prove an App Store violation. The policy question is whether TikTok’s iOS app improperly directs users to outside checkout, and the answer can depend on the storefront and applicable legal rules. As of the latest verified U.S. App Store information reviewed, dated August 18, 2026, TikTok remained listed with Coin in-app purchases; no verified source showed an Apple ban notice or formal Coin-related removal action.
What the Coin controversy is about
Coins are TikTok-controlled virtual items users buy and then use for certain TikTok features and services, including sending Gifts and some Promote flows. They are not ordinary money: TikTok says they cannot be exchanged for cash, used as general currency, or traded between users. TikTok’s U.S. Virtual Items Policy, last updated January 22, 2026, describes the terms governing them.

- Coins are purchased by users and spent on eligible TikTok virtual items or services.
- Gifts are virtual items users send to eligible creators or LIVE hosts.
- Diamonds are creator-side virtual rewards or accounting units governed by TikTok’s separate rules.
- Promote is TikTok’s post-boosting service; payment options can differ by platform. TikTok’s Promote terms say that Apple-platform payments must be made in Coins.
The dispute is not simply that Coins can be bought on the web. TikTok itself documents that option. The more significant question is whether a particular iPhone or iPad app screen steers users from an in-app purchase to an external payment route in a way Apple’s rules or the rules in that region prohibit.
What prompted the App Store question
On April 30, 2024, TechCrunch reported screenshots and app-code references suggesting TikTok was testing or showing prompts that encouraged some users to recharge Coins on TikTok’s website. The report described possible web discounts, including a saving of as much as 30% compared with an Apple in-app purchase, along with references to “webcoin” and identity verification. Those were reported indications of a possible steering strategy—not proof of a universal discount, a current feature shown to every user, or an Apple finding that TikTok broke its rules. It helps to distinguish four kinds of evidence: screenshots or code references showing a possible interface; TikTok’s published purchase policy; Apple’s written review rules; and an actual enforcement decision. The first three raise a question, but they do not establish the fourth.
How to buy Coins through each official route
In the TikTok iOS app
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button, then choose Balance.
- Tap Get Coins, choose a package, and tap Recharge.
- Complete payment through the applicable app store. TikTok also documents recharging from a LIVE by tapping Gift and then Recharge.
For an iOS in-app purchase, Apple handles the billing; Apple’s purchase and refund process applies. TikTok’s step-by-step instructions are on its Gifts and Coins support page.
On TikTok’s website
- Go to tiktok.com/coin.
- Choose a Coin package and select Recharge.
- Complete payment using a method offered for your location.
Where supported, gift cards can be redeemed at tiktok.com/coin/redeem. Web purchase and gift-card availability vary by country.

Eligibility, availability, and prices
TikTok’s U.S. policy generally requires purchasers to be at least 18, or older if the local age of majority is higher. Available purchase channels, payment methods, packages, prices, and taxes can vary by country and route. The U.S. App Store listing reviewed for this article displayed examples of 20 Coins for $0.29 and 350 Coins for $5.00; those are listing-specific prices, not a universal or permanent rate. Check the current offer for your own region and account.

When comparing routes, use the same country, currency, package size, tax treatment, and date. TikTok says the cost per Coin can vary by package and where it is purchased; a headline price alone is not a reliable comparison.
What Apple’s rules generally require
Apple’s App Review Guidelines, which displayed a June 8, 2026 update date in the reviewed version, generally require In-App Purchase for digital content, virtual currency, and functionality used in an app. The guidelines also address external links and calls to action for alternate payment methods, while recognizing exceptions and region-specific arrangements. Their digital-goods rules include requirements concerning in-app currencies and digital gift cards.

That general rule does not mean every web sale of a digital item is automatically forbidden. The relevant details can include whether the user initiated a purchase inside the app, whether the app shows a link, button, discount or other prompt for outside checkout, which App Store storefront is involved, and whether a regional entitlement or legal order applies. A user’s ability to spend Coins bought elsewhere and an app’s active steering to a website are different questions.
Why the U.S. legal position is not just the guideline text
Apple’s 2026 Form 10-Q describes litigation and court orders stemming from Epic Games v. Apple. Apple disclosed that a California federal court found it in violation of an injunction and restricted Apple from charging fees on certain outside-app purchases, restricting or prohibiting how developers guide consumers to outside purchases, and interfering with a consumer’s choice to proceed inside or outside an app. Apple also disclosed that the Ninth Circuit upheld part of the injunction while modifying other provisions, including allowing Apple to require parity in size, form, and placement between Apple purchase options and external links, and permitting a commission on link-out purchases. The filing is available through the SEC.
This is not blanket immunity for every link-out design, nor does it make U.S. rules a guide to every country. Apple’s published guidelines may not describe every practical limitation created by U.S. litigation. TikTok publishes a separate rest-of-world Virtual Items Policy, and Apple’s rules and available exceptions can differ by storefront. A purchase flow permitted in one market may face different requirements elsewhere.

Could Apple remove TikTok?
Apple’s guidelines say egregious or repeated violations can lead to immediate removal from the App Store and removal from the Apple Developer Program. That is a general enforcement power, not evidence Apple has decided to use it against TikTok over Coins.
- Immediate ban based on the evidence available: unsupported. The reviewed U.S. App Store listing still showed TikTok and Coin in-app purchase options, and no reviewed source reported a Coin-related removal notice or formal ban threat.
- App review dispute or request to change a purchase screen: plausible if Apple objects to a particular implementation.
- Different treatment by region: plausible because rules and legal exceptions are not uniform worldwide.
- Removal after serious or repeated noncompliance: possible under Apple’s stated rules, but not established as an active outcome here.
The most useful evidence of escalation would be an Apple rejection or enforcement notice, a TikTok statement about a required change, a delisting, or a relevant court filing. In their absence, a prediction that TikTok will be banned goes beyond what the available evidence supports.

| Route | Payment and price | Refund route | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok iOS app | Apple In-App Purchase; price is the one shown in the user’s App Store storefront. | Request a refund through Apple or the applicable app store. | Price may differ from TikTok’s web offer; retain the Apple receipt. |
| TikTok website | TikTok’s checkout and available payment methods; package and price vary by location. | TikTok says direct Coins are generally nonrefundable once available, subject to applicable law and exceptions such as a defective product. | Confirm the account before payment; web availability and payment options vary by country. |
| Gift card | Redeemed through TikTok’s system where gift cards are available; value depends on the card. | Terms depend on the gift card and applicable rules. | Not available everywhere; redeem only through TikTok’s official page. |
For a direct web purchase, check that you are signed into the TikTok account that should receive the Coins. If payment succeeds but Coins do not appear, verify the account and transaction receipt, allow for possible synchronization delay, then use TikTok’s support route. The policy makes the purchase channel important: an Apple-billed transaction goes to Apple for refunds, while direct purchases are governed by TikTok’s policy and applicable law. Google Play purchases have a separate support route under TikTok’s policy.

Use only TikTok’s app or its official Coin recharge page. TikTok’s policy does not permit buying, selling, transferring, or exchanging Virtual Items outside the platform except as expressly allowed, so third-party “discount Coin” sellers are not a safe substitute.
What Promote users should know
Creators and small businesses using Promote should check the payment flow for their platform rather than assuming Coin rules are identical everywhere. TikTok says Apple-platform Promote payments must be made in Coins, while its Promote payment guidance describes payment methods that can vary between app and web. Promote is TikTok’s simplified in-platform boosting service, not a general-purpose ad-buying system.
