Texas Instruments announced on December 2, 1997, that vice chairman William P. “Pat” Weber would retire from the company effective April 30, 1998. The planned departure followed 35 years at TI and closed the active corporate career of a senior semiconductor executive who had briefly served as acting president and chief executive officer after Jerry R. Junkins died.

What Texas Instruments announced

TI said Weber would retire on April 30, 1998. The announcement, reported by EE Times on December 2, 1997, described a scheduled retirement from Texas Instruments—not an immediate resignation, dismissal or same-day departure. EE Times’ contemporary report identified Weber as the company’s vice chairman and a 35-year employee.

TI’s 1997 corporate filing also listed William P. Weber as a director and vice chairman. The filing documents his senior corporate status at the time of the announcement.

Weber’s career at TI

Leadership of the Semiconductor Group

Weber was president of TI’s Semiconductor Group from 1986 through 1993. During that period, the group moved away from heavier reliance on commodity devices toward higher-value integrated circuits and put greater emphasis on digital signal processing, a field that became central to TI’s semiconductor identity. The available contemporary account credits Weber with leading the group during that transition, but does not establish that he alone initiated or executed every element of the strategy.

Move into corporate leadership

TI’s historical timeline records Weber and Bill Mitchell becoming vice chairmen in 1993. That appointment placed Weber in the company’s senior corporate leadership, beyond his earlier operating role in semiconductors. The timeline is available from Texas Instruments’ corporate history.

Why the retirement was tied to TI’s succession story

Junkins’s sudden death

Chairman, president and CEO Jerry R. Junkins died suddenly on May 29, 1996. Weber became acting president and CEO while TI arranged permanent leadership. Because Weber had extensive operating experience and was already a senior executive, some industry observers expected he might receive the permanent post.

Engibous and Adams take the permanent roles

TI instead appointed Thomas J. “Tom” Engibous president and CEO in June 1996 and appointed Jim Adams chairman. The company described an office-of-the-chairman and chief-executive structure that included Adams, Engibous, Mitchell and Weber during the transition. TI’s announcement is preserved in the company’s June 20, 1996 release.

Executive Role in the transition
Jerry R. Junkins Chairman, president and CEO until his death on May 29, 1996
Pat Weber Acting president and CEO after Junkins’s death; later vice chairman until his planned retirement
Tom Engibous Appointed president and CEO in June 1996
Jim Adams Appointed chairman in June 1996
Rich Templeton Succeeded Engibous as president of the Semiconductor Group in 1996

This sequence is why describing Weber simply as a “former CEO” is misleading: he served as acting president and CEO, but Engibous became the permanent chief executive.

What Weber’s departure meant for TI

The retirement marked the end of Weber’s active TI leadership after a long tenure spanning the company’s semiconductor repositioning and a difficult CEO succession. It also signaled that the post-Junkins management arrangement was moving into its next phase. Weber was not merely a routine retiring executive: he had led the semiconductor business, occupied the interim top operating role and remained part of the senior team after TI selected Engibous.

In comments reported by EE Times, Engibous praised Weber’s sense of purpose, responsibility, dedication, integrity, concern for employees and work in international and government affairs. Weber expressed confidence in TI’s position in digital-signal-processing solutions and in the team that would lead the company into the next century. Those remarks present the retirement as an orderly handoff, not evidence of a forced exit or a performance dispute.

What the announcement does not establish

  • It does not give a reason for Weber’s retirement, such as health, compensation or disagreement with management.
  • It does not document Weber’s plans after leaving TI.
  • It confirms retirement from Texas Instruments, not withdrawal from the semiconductor industry as a whole.
  • It does not show that the retirement itself caused a change in TI’s strategy or market performance.

Later TI biographies provide additional historical context: Engibous later became chairman, while Rich Templeton eventually rose to CEO. Those later developments should be kept separate from the December 1997 retirement announcement. TI’s later leadership material describes that longer succession path.
