This Is the World’s First Bitcoin ATM: The 2013 Robocoin in Vancouver

A Robocoin kiosk at Vancouver’s Waves Coffee House became the first widely recognized permanent, public, two-way Bitcoin ATM on October 29, 2013. Here is who built it, how customers used it and why modern Bitcoin ATM safety matters.

The machine widely recognized as the world’s first Bitcoin ATM was a Robocoin kiosk installed at Waves Coffee House in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 29, 2013. Vancouver Bitcoin business Bitcoiniacs bought and operated it; Nevada-based Robocoin made the hardware. Unlike a conventional bank ATM, it exchanged Canadian cash for Bitcoin and Bitcoin for cash.

The precise historical claim matters: Vancouver’s kiosk is best described as the first permanent, publicly accessible, commercially operated, two-way Bitcoin ATM widely documented in contemporary reporting—not necessarily the first prototype, demonstration, or one-way cryptocurrency kiosk.

What machine was the first Bitcoin ATM?

The Robocoin at Waves Coffee House is the machine contemporary coverage identified as the world’s first Bitcoin ATM. It stood inside the coffee shop near the espresso counter at Howe and Smithe streets. Customers could insert Canadian cash to buy Bitcoin or scan a Bitcoin QR code and receive cash when selling.

That made it different from a bank ATM. It did not access a checking account, dispense money from a bank balance, or process a card withdrawal. It was a physical interface to a Bitcoin wallet, an exchange and the Bitcoin network.

  • 1,000 Note Cassette
  • Electronic Lock
  • EMV Card Reader
  • 8inch Color LCD Screen

WIRED’s contemporary account and Mining.com’s launch report place the public opening on October 29, 2013. Some later references call the launch a November event; the October date is the one supported by the contemporaneous reports.

Why “first” needs a qualification

Robocoin had demonstrated or tested its machine before Vancouver, including at a San Jose convention in May 2013. A demonstration unit, a temporary test and a permanent retail installation are different milestones. The Vancouver machine is notable because it was available to the public on an ongoing basis and supported both directions of exchange.

  • Prototype: hardware or software that may never serve ordinary customers.
  • Demonstration: a temporary machine shown at an event.
  • One-way kiosk: a machine that sells Bitcoin but does not dispense cash for Bitcoin.
  • Permanent public ATM: a fixed installation that ordinary customers can use.
  • Two-way ATM: a kiosk that buys Bitcoin with cash and buys Bitcoin back for cash.

Calling the Vancouver Robocoin the “first Bitcoin machine ever” would therefore overstate what the evidence establishes.

Who built and operated it?

Robocoin supplied the ATM technology. Bitcoiniacs, a Vancouver Bitcoin business, purchased and operated the local installation. Bitcoiniacs ordered five Robocoin machines for Canadian locations, with further cities announced at the time. Bitcoiniacs was not the manufacturer.

How a customer used the Vancouver kiosk

  1. The customer selected a purchase or sale at the kiosk inside Waves Coffee House.
  2. For a purchase, the customer inserted Canadian cash and supplied a Bitcoin wallet address, typically through a QR code.
  3. The machine sent Bitcoin through a backend exchange connection. WIRED identified Bitstamp during testing.
  4. For a sale, the customer presented a QR code representing Bitcoin and the kiosk dispensed Canadian cash.
  5. A palm scanner was used for identity or transaction-limit management. WIRED described a reported Canadian daily limit of CDN$3,000 for the launch setup.

The system still involved a wallet, an exchange, transaction confirmation and operating limits. It did not make Bitcoin instantaneous or frictionless in the way a cash withdrawal from a bank account might appear.

What made it important

Before the kiosk, a newcomer generally had to find an exchange, create an account, transfer money and wait for the exchange process. The Vancouver machine put Bitcoin in an ordinary retail setting and allowed a customer to use cash. Waves Coffee House accepted Bitcoin at the time, so a buyer could obtain the asset and spend it in the same location.

The innovation was less about novel ATM mechanics than about access. An internet-native asset became something a person could encounter beside a coffee counter, with a visible machine and a cash transaction.

The first launch was experimental, not seamless

Contemporary reporting records a temperamental installation. During testing and launch preparation:

  • The backend exchange temporarily went offline, leaving the kiosk unusable.
  • The Windows software booted into safe mode.
  • The receipt printer initially failed.
  • The palm-reader cover had to be removed or adjusted.
  • Operators spent hours changing software and troubleshooting.
  • The interface was rough and not especially easy to use.

The first reported customer inserted a $20 bill and received approximately one-tenth of a Bitcoin, then spent it at the coffee shop. The amount was approximate because the exchange rate and fees applied on October 29, 2013 were variable.

Byte Federal’s retrospective history says the machine processed $10,000 in transactions on its first day. That is a later industry account, not an independently confirmed figure in the contemporary launch reports, so it should be treated as attributed historical reporting.

How Bitcoin ATMs differ today

Modern machines are often branded “crypto ATMs” or “BTMs.” Many support several cryptocurrencies, not only Bitcoin, and operators commonly require phone verification, identity documents, wallet setup or all three. Limits, fees and availability depend on the operator, transaction direction, jurisdiction and transaction size. The Federal Trade Commission notes that machines commonly called Bitcoin ATMs may handle cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin.

Provider What its published information indicates Main trade-off
CoinFlip Its ATM page lists a $20 first-transaction minimum, cash, a phone passcode and a wallet. Its terms list kiosk fees of 21.90% for purchases and 4.99% for sales, plus a network fee of at least $2.49; rates can change. Convenient access, but the published purchase fee can be very high.
Byte Federal Its FAQ says a first transaction is limited to $300 and that successful registration may raise the limit to $29,500 per day, subject to state law. Government-issued photo ID is required. Higher potential limits require registration and identification; limits vary by state.
Bitcoin Depot Its support documentation lists a $20 minimum and a $25,000 standard daily maximum for its documented purchase flow, with rolling and state-specific variations. Availability and restrictions differ by state and between online purchases and physical kiosks.

These are operator-specific disclosures, not industry-wide rates. Compare the final quoted exchange rate, fee and network charge before confirming. A kiosk can be useful for immediate cash access, but it is often a poor choice for a large or fee-sensitive purchase.

The most important safety warning

No legitimate government agency, police department, bank or technology company will tell you to deposit money into a Bitcoin ATM to protect your funds, fix a computer, pay a fine or avoid arrest. If someone contacted you unexpectedly with that instruction, stop. The FTC calls this a scam.

The FTC reported that losses involving Bitcoin ATMs rose nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023 and exceeded $65 million in the first half of 2024. It said about 86% of reported BTM fraud losses in that period involved government-impersonation, business-impersonation and/or tech-support scams.

Before using any modern kiosk

  • Find the machine through the operator’s official locator and use its official support number.
  • Check the total fee, exchange rate, network fee and transaction limits on the confirmation screen.
  • Verify every character of the wallet address or QR code before sending.
  • Assume a Bitcoin transfer may be irreversible once confirmed.
  • Do not act on payment instructions delivered by an unexpected caller, text, email or pop-up.

Why the Vancouver Robocoin still matters

The Waves Coffee House kiosk made Bitcoin physically accessible at a moment when buying it usually meant navigating an online exchange. Its significance lies in that bridge between cash and a digital asset—and in the fact that the bridge was imperfect, dependent on an exchange backend and constrained by identification and transaction controls.

In 2013, the breakthrough was putting Bitcoin beside an espresso machine. Today, the harder question is whether the operator, price, wallet address and reason for the transaction are legitimate.
