These Billionaires Bet on Greenland’s Minerals Before Trump’s Renewed Interest

KoBold’s Greenland exploration deal was reported in 2021, before renewed Trump-era attention. Here is how that project differs from a proposed technology hub and unfinished U.S. investment discussions.

The Greenland mineral bet did not begin with Donald Trump’s renewed interest in the island. Reuters reported in 2021 that KoBold Metals had agreed to fund exploration with Bluejay Mining, years before later political attention. Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos and Ray Dalio were among the backers of Breakthrough Energy Ventures, one of KoBold’s principal investors. That is an indirect connection to a Greenland exploration project—not proof that each billionaire personally invested in it or that a mine was built.

What did the billionaires actually bet on?

The clearest link is through KoBold Metals, a mineral-exploration company backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). Reuters reported in 2021 that KoBold and Bluejay Mining had agreed on exploration at the Disko-Nuussuaq project in western Greenland. The reported deal provided $15 million in exploration funding in exchange for a 51% stake in the project. The money was for evaluation and initial drilling, not a producing mine.

Reuters identified BEV as one of KoBold’s principal investors and named Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos and Ray Dalio among BEV’s backers. That chain matters: it supports describing these billionaires as investors behind a fund that backed KoBold, but it does not establish that they each directly financed the Greenland project, held a personal stake in it, or controlled its development.

Forbes’ exact-title article, as reflected in its search-result extract, says the billionaires had invested in KoBold since 2019. The extract also says a May 2025 filing by former Greenland partner 80 Mile Plc showed KoBold no longer held equity in the joint venture, while retaining royalties on future production. This later ownership detail should not be conflated with the 51% project stake described in Reuters’ 2021 report: the two accounts refer to different dates and the 2025 detail is attributed to Forbes and the filing it cites.

How the Greenland-related bets differ

Opportunity What was reported Stage and exposure
KoBold–Bluejay, Disko-Nuussuaq Reuters reported in 2021 that KoBold would provide $15 million in exploration funding for a 51% project stake. Mineral exploration and initial drilling, not production. Forbes’ extract, citing a May 2025 filing by former partner 80 Mile Plc, says KoBold later no longer held equity in the joint venture but retained royalties on future production.
Proposed Greenland “freedom city” or technology hub Reuters reported early discussions in 2025 about possible concepts including AI, autonomous vehicles, space launches, micro nuclear reactors and high-speed rail. Proposal-stage concept; Reuters’ reporting did not establish an approved project. Active lobbying by Peter Thiel or Marc Andreessen was not established.
Tanbreez rare-earth deposit Reuters reported in October 2025 that U.S. administration officials had discussed taking an equity stake in Critical Metals Corp, which is developing the deposit. Unfinished financing discussions at the time of the report, not a completed government investment. An unnamed senior administration official told Reuters, “There is absolutely nothing close with this company at this time.”

What changed after Trump took an interest?

Political attention put Greenland’s strategic location and mineral potential in the spotlight, but it did not create the first billionaire-linked exploration effort. The KoBold–Bluejay agreement was reported in 2021. Later stories involved different things: a speculative technology-hub concept in 2025, discussions about a possible U.S. equity stake in a mining company that same year, and a reported rise in investor approaches in 2026.

In March 2026, Reuters quoted Greenland’s minister for business and mineral resources, Naaja H. Nathanielsen, saying, “On the investors’ side, we did see an increase of interest in investments.” Reuters also reported that more than 20 mining companies were in Greenland’s delegation at a Toronto mining conference. That is a count of companies in a conference delegation, not a count of operating mines, signed investments or projects under construction.

Why interest does not mean Greenland is about to become a mining hub

A mineral deposit is only one part of a mine. The Associated Press has described practical obstacles in Greenland including remoteness, sparse roads and railways, the need to supply power and skilled workers, difficult geology and processing, environmental concerns, and substantial capital requirements. Each can affect whether a project can be financed, permitted, built and operated at a commercially viable scale.

Rare-earth supply concerns are one reason Greenland attracts attention, but they do not make a specific Greenland project an immediate solution. AP reported that Noveon Magnetics CEO Scott Dunn said, “Over 90% of the world’s rare earths come from China.” That is Dunn’s attributed figure in AP’s 2026 reporting, not a measure of what Greenland currently produces or will produce.

AP also quoted Tracy Hughes, founder and executive director of the Critical Minerals Institute, describing the focus on Greenland as more about “geopolitical posturing” and a “stock-promotion narrative” than a realistic technology-sector supply solution. That is Hughes’ opinion, not a settled finding; it underlines why political rhetoric and mining economics should be evaluated separately.

How to read the investment headlines

  • Check the stage. Exploration, development, production and a proposed city are not interchangeable. The 2021 KoBold–Bluejay arrangement was for exploration and initial drilling; the technology-hub idea was early-stage; and the reported Tanbreez equity discussions were unfinished.
  • Identify the exposure. Project funding, project equity, an investor’s stake in a company, and royalty rights are different financial interests. The 2021 funding-and-stake report does not by itself describe KoBold’s later position, and Forbes’ account of the May 2025 filing describes a later change.
  • Separate a target from an outcome. A proposed project, a financing discussion or an expected production figure does not establish permitting, construction, financing completion or future output.
  • Keep the date attached to the claim. Ownership and financing can change. The 2021 agreement, Forbes’ account of the May 2025 filing, Reuters’ October 2025 account of Tanbreez discussions and Reuters’ March 2026 report of increased interest describe different moments and different projects.
