The Prompting Company snags $6.5M to help products get mentioned in ChatGPT and other AI apps

The Prompting Company’s $6.5 million seed round backs software that monitors AI answers, creates machine-readable content and tests whether agents can use products—not a guarantee of ChatGPT mentions.

The Prompting Company raised a $6.5 million seed round to help companies measure and improve how their products appear in AI-generated answers. The startup is not claiming it can rewrite ChatGPT’s model weights or guarantee a recommendation. Its software tests product-related prompts across systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, monitors mentions and citations, creates structured pages, and increasingly tests whether AI agents can actually use a product’s documentation and tools.

That makes the company better understood as AI-discovery and agent-readiness software than as a magic “mention us in ChatGPT” service.

What happened with The Prompting Company’s funding?

The company announced the seed round on October 30, 2025. TechCrunch reported that the four-month-old, Y Combinator-backed startup was founded by Kevin Chandra, Michelle Marcelline and Albert Putra Purnama. The founders previously built Typedream, a Y Combinator-backed website builder later acquired by beehiiv, and Cotter, a passwordless-authentication SDK later acquired by Stytch. TechCrunch reported the funding and founder history.

Peak XV Partners led the round. The investor lists differ between public accounts:

Those lists should not be treated as identical. The company’s later account may include participants not listed in the original report, while TechCrunch included Firedrop and an angel investor.

The company said the money would fund large-scale AI-discovery testing, analytics, content generation, citation monitoring and agent-workflow evaluation. It also said it was collaborating with Nvidia on next-generation AI search, a claim reported by TechCrunch rather than independently verified.

What The Prompting Company actually sells

The company’s original product pitch was “generative engine optimization,” or GEO. In plain English, it helps a business answer four questions:

  1. What questions are potential customers asking AI systems?
  2. Does the company appear in the answers?
  3. How do the answers describe it compared with competitors?
  4. Can the company publish clearer information that AI systems can retrieve and cite?

The platform’s public description combines several functions: AI-answer visibility monitoring, prompt and query research, AI-oriented content creation, citation tracking, machine-readable pages and, under its newer positioning, tests of whether agents can complete technical workflows. Its official site describes the product workflow.

It does not claim to retrain ChatGPT or directly control the output of a model. It probes publicly available AI interfaces, measures what they return, and improves the information and interfaces that those systems may encounter.

How the GEO process works

1. Find high-intent questions

The software looks for questions that resemble real buying or implementation decisions, such as “What are the best payroll platforms for a 100-person startup?”, “Which API provides real-time voice agents?” or “What is the best passwordless-authentication SDK?” These prompts are more useful than simply tracking a company name because they reveal where a product might be discovered before a user knows the brand.

2. Test answers across models

The company says it checks systems including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. A useful report can record whether a product appears, its prominence, competing products, the wording used to describe it, cited sources, factual errors and changes between repeated runs.

An AI answer is not a stable ranking position. Results can change with the model, date, location, language, browsing state, personalization and available sources. Reliable measurement therefore needs repeated, timestamped tests with model and geography labels. “Observed mention rate” is more accurate than saying a company has secured a ranking.

3. Create useful, structured information

The company says it generates or helps publish content designed to answer high-intent questions and become a source that AI systems can understand and cite. That can include:

  • Comparison and alternative pages.
  • Use-case and capability pages.
  • Technical documentation and integration guides.
  • API, SDK, CLI and MCP-server descriptions.
  • Pricing, eligibility and setup explanations.
  • Frequently asked questions and workflow instructions.

This is not the same as “training ChatGPT on a brand.” The practical aim is to make public information clearer, more complete and easier for retrieval systems to interpret.

4. Route systems to cleaner pages

The company says it can route AI systems to a markdown version of a page without navigation clutter, pop-ups or other human-facing elements. That may help a model parse documentation, but it should not mean hiding different substantive claims from human visitors. Buyers should check canonical URLs, accessibility, version control and whether AI-facing content stays accurate.

5. Test whether an agent can use the product

In a June 2026 announcement, the company broadened its positioning to “Agent Experience.” It says it evaluates whether an agent can find the correct documentation, select the right API or setup path, use an MCP server, CLI or SDK, handle errors and complete a task. The company’s announcement explains that shift.

This is a more demanding test than a mention. A model may describe an API correctly while still failing authentication, choosing the wrong endpoint or mishandling an error. Agent usability also requires authorization, confirmation for destructive actions, rate limits, audit logs and recovery procedures.

GEO versus SEO

Traditional SEO Generative engine optimization
Targets search-result pages and rankings Targets AI-generated answers, recommendations and citations
Emphasizes keywords, links, crawlability and technical indexing Emphasizes entity clarity, answerability, source quality and structured information
Usually presents a list of links Usually presents a synthesized answer
Rankings can be comparatively stable for a query Outputs can vary across runs, models and user contexts
Click-through rate is a familiar outcome Mention rate, citation rate, referrals and agent completion are developing measures

GEO can complement SEO, not replace it. Strong documentation, reputable third-party coverage and a crawlable website can help both search engines and AI systems. But no vendor can guarantee that ChatGPT will mention a product, cite a newly published page or produce a favorable recommendation.

Why companies are paying attention

The startup’s thesis is that AI assistants are becoming product-discovery interfaces. People already ask AI systems to compare software, choose infrastructure and explain implementation options. The company expects agents to take on more purchasing and workflow tasks over time, but that remains a forward-looking prediction rather than an established channel for every business.

  • QUALITY YOU CAN FEEL — made in the USA from sustainably-forested paper with vegetable-based inks and a starch-based laminate that keeps them durable. As kind to the planet as they are to your conversations.

The strongest current case is practical: companies need to know how AI systems describe them, correct inaccurate public information and make technical products easier for both humans and software agents to use.

Customers and reported traction

TechCrunch reported customers including Rippling, Rho, Motion, Vapi, Fondo, Kernel and Traceloop. The company also said a Fortune 10 company used its platform, that it hosted roughly half a million pages for that customer and that traffic sent to clients reached the double-digit millions per month. These are company-reported claims relayed by TechCrunch, not independently audited performance figures. See the original reporting.

Page volume and referral traffic show operating scale, not necessarily incremental revenue. A serious buyer should ask which visits were qualified, which converted and whether the traffic was genuinely attributable to AI referrals.

Does GEO work?

It can improve the clarity and discoverability of a company’s public information, and it can reveal when AI systems describe a product inaccurately or omit it from important questions. That is a reasonable use of monitoring and content infrastructure.

It cannot prove that a mention caused a sale. A product can be cited and ignored; an answer can recommend a product based on sources a vendor cannot see; and a favorable answer in one model may not appear in another. Model providers can also change crawling, retrieval, citations, permissions and commercial placement without notice.

Evaluate results in two layers:

  • Visibility: mention rate, prominence, share of voice, citation rate and description accuracy.
  • Business and operational outcomes: AI-referred sessions, qualified leads, assisted conversions, documentation success and agent task-completion rate.

Publishing large numbers of pages is not evidence of effectiveness by itself. Uncontrolled volume can create duplicates, contradictory claims, stale pricing, maintenance costs and poor user experience.

Who is the platform for?

Likely strong fits

  • Enterprise SaaS and fintech companies.
  • Developer tools, APIs, SDKs, infrastructure and MCP servers.
  • Businesses with substantial technical documentation.
  • Teams already operating SEO, content and analytics programs.

Likely weaker fits

  • Local businesses with little AI-discovery demand.
  • Products with little differentiated public information.
  • Teams unable to review generated claims.
  • Buyers seeking guaranteed placement, clicks or revenue.
  • Businesses whose sales depend mainly on visual merchandising rather than explanatory information.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Are prompts customized to real buyers, regions and languages?
  • Are runs repeated and timestamped, with raw responses exportable?
  • Are citations, competitors and browsing conditions recorded?
  • Can subject-matter experts approve every generated page?
  • Are pages canonicalized and integrated with the existing site?
  • Can the system test APIs, SDKs, CLIs, MCP servers and error handling?
  • Can analytics separate AI referrals from direct, organic and paid traffic?
  • Can the vendor report leads, conversions or completed tasks rather than mentions alone?
  • How are regulated claims, outdated pricing, access controls and customer data governed?

Alternatives and the wider market

Buyers can compare a dedicated platform with an enterprise AI-visibility vendor, an SEO suite adding AI-answer tracking, or an agency and in-house testing program. Potential vendors to evaluate include Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Scrunch AI and Ahrefs. Current pricing and feature availability for those alternatives are not established here.

Compare model coverage, prompt volume, refresh frequency, regional support, citation tracking, raw-response access, content review, technical agent testing, conversion attribution, API integrations, SSO and data retention—not just the number of tracked prompts.

Bottom line

The Prompting Company is building for a real problem: businesses need to understand how AI systems discover and describe products, and technical products need documentation that agents can successfully use. Its $6.5 million seed round reflects investor interest in that distribution shift.

The defensible value is measurement, clearer information and workflow testing—not control over ChatGPT. Treat GEO as an experimental acquisition and documentation channel, measure qualified outcomes, and keep human review in charge of every customer-facing claim.
