This retrospective guide puts the pre-event odds and picks in context, lists the Thursday featured groups and tee times, and records how the course and field looked before play began. All prices, recommendations, schedules and viewing details below refer to the completed 2024 championship; they are not current betting offers or event information.

What picks and matchups were published before the tournament?
The Forbes preview summarized picks from Golf Digest, SportingLife, GolfBet and FanDuel, and included both tournament and first-round matchups. Its own explicit calls included McIlroy over DeChambeau in a tournament matchup and Fleetwood over Åberg in a first-round matchup. These were pre-tournament opinions, not results or verified predictions.
A separate July 2024 Betfair preview discussed Royal Troon course history and highlighted Wyndham Clark as its pick, alongside analysis of Schauffele and other favorites. The different recommendations show why it would be inaccurate to present a single consensus pick.

What viewing features were available for the 2024 championship?
In a July 14 announcement, The R&A said its official app offered scoring, a spectator guide, free R&A TV live streams, featured-group coverage, ShotView for following shots across the field, and other event features. These describe services announced for the 2024 event; the announcement does not establish that those particular live feeds remain available. See The R&A’s app announcement.
What were Royal Troon and the field like before play?
PGA TOUR pre-tournament notes listed Royal Troon as a par-71 course measuring 7,385 yards. The same notes said 49 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking and 19 past Open champions were in the field. These are pre-event figures, not descriptions of current rankings or a future field.

At the time, Scottie Scheffler was world No. 1 after six PGA TOUR wins that season; Schauffele was world No. 3 and had won the 2024 PGA Championship. Those credentials help explain their prominence in pre-event odds, but they do not turn historical prices into a reliable measure of what happened. The context appears in PGA TOUR’s pre-tournament notes.

In comments reported by Forbes on July 17, McIlroy said, “Obviously grew up playing a lot of links golf, but when you only come back to play once or twice a year, it just takes you a little time to adapt to links onditions, links turf, green speeds.” The Forbes text renders “conditions” as “onditions.”

Scheffler said, “I’m excited to be back over here this year. I think the golf course is great, and there should get some good wind this week. I feel like you have to be more creative here, and that’s how golf was intended to be played.”
Schauffele said, “I really enjoy playing links golf and all the challenges that come with it. There’s a certain attitude that you need to have to play at a high level, and that comes with playing links golf.”
DeChambeau said, “I hit the golf ball really high, and out here in the wind I’ve got to control and keep a lower flight.” These are remarks as reproduced in the July 17 Forbes article; its underlying press-conference transcript is not independently established here.
What were the conditions on the final Sunday?
PGA TOUR’s final-round notes describe Sunday, July 21—not the full tournament—as mostly cloudy, with a high of 63°F and west-southwest winds of 12–15 mph, gusting to 24 mph. The notes also record Schauffele’s winning score and the runners-up’ totals.
