Short answer: The advertised deal was genuine during Black Friday 2024. Engadget reported a 13-inch M3 MacBook Air with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD at $844, down from a cited $1,099 reference price—a $255 reduction. As of August 16, 2026, that price should be treated as expired unless a retailer independently confirms the identical configuration and price.
What the original deal included
Engadget’s November 30, 2024 report described a 13-inch MacBook Air using Apple’s M3 chip, 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. The reported Amazon price was $844 versus a cited $1,099 list price, which works out to $255 off. The deal article was published at 9:30 p.m. EST, so “still available” referred to remaining Black Friday inventory at that time, not to an evergreen offer. See the original coverage at Engadget.
MacRumors reported the same base configuration at $849, or exactly $250 off, earlier in the promotion. Prices could change with retailer inventory, color and timing. That explains why both $844 and $849 appear in coverage; neither is a verified 2026 price.
Apple calls the memory “unified memory.” Retail listings often call it RAM, but the 16GB/256GB combination is the important distinction.

Why 16GB mattered
Apple increased the standard memory configuration for the M3 MacBook Air from 8GB to 16GB in October 2024, shortly before the promotion. More memory helps when keeping many browser tabs, office apps, communications tools and creative applications open together, and it avoids the more serious limitation of an 8GB base model for longer-term use. Some reports also listed 8GB versions. Those are not equivalent to the 16GB headline deal.
What the 13-inch M3 Air can do
Apple introduced the 13- and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air in March 2024. Apple’s technical specifications list an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, Wi‑Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and support for Apple Intelligence-compatible workloads when the software and macOS requirements are met. The 13-inch model has a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with 2560×1664 resolution and 500-nit brightness, weighs 2.7 pounds, and includes a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. - The built-in screen can run with one external display. A second external display is supported with the laptop lid closed.
- The fanless design is silent, but sustained rendering, compiling or other intensive work can be better suited to a actively cooled MacBook Pro.
- There is no built-in cellular modem, and memory and storage cannot be upgraded after purchase.
- The 60Hz-class display is not a high-refresh gaming panel.
The 256GB SSD is the real compromise
The $844–$849 configuration had only 256GB of storage. That is generally workable for browser-based work, documents, school applications, streaming and people who keep files in cloud storage. It becomes restrictive when you store photo or video libraries, games, music projects, virtual machines, local AI models or large development environments.
The reported 16GB/512GB model cost about $200 more. A TechRadar analysis noted that this premium can compare unfavorably with buying external storage, although an external drive is less convenient and less portable. Because storage is soldered, select 512GB at purchase if your expected library will grow.

Should you still buy an M3 Air in 2026?
Apple’s current comparison materials include newer M5 MacBook Air hardware with 16GB of unified memory and 512GB of starting storage. The comparison page is at Apple.com. No live 2026 price for the old M3 configuration was verified here, so compare the actual checkout price—not the former $1,099 reference price—with a current model.
The M3 makes sense when
- The verified price is close to the historical $844–$849 level.
- You need a lightweight macOS laptop for school, office work, browsing, calls, coding or light-to-moderate creative work.
- 16GB memory is a priority and 256GB is sufficient, or you already have external storage.
- A comparable newer Air costs substantially more and the seller offers a normal warranty and return period.
Choose a newer MacBook Air when
- The price gap is small.
- You plan to keep the laptop for many years and value a newer processor and longer remaining support horizon.
- You need 512GB as standard or expect heavier development, creative or AI workloads.
- The newer model provides connectivity, camera or display features that matter to you.
Consider a MacBook Pro or Windows laptop instead
A MacBook Pro is the better fit for sustained video rendering, 3D work, large software builds, active cooling, more ports, a higher-end display or higher memory ceilings. A Windows laptop may be preferable for gaming, Windows-only applications, upgradeable RAM or storage, or a larger built-in port selection.

Where the historical offer was sold
The promotion was primarily an Amazon deal, with some Best Buy price matching or carrying similar discounts. Apple’s store does not automatically match every temporary retailer price. On Amazon, distinguish “sold and shipped by Amazon” from a third-party marketplace seller, “fulfilled by Amazon,” and renewed or refurbished inventory. A Best Buy product page for the 16GB/256GB model is indexed at Best Buy, but that page does not establish current price or stock. Apple’s direct buying page is Apple Store.
Checkout checklist for any remaining listing
- Confirm the chip says M3, not M2 or a newer generation.
- Confirm 16GB unified memory; search results can mix 8GB and 16GB models.
- Confirm the exact SSD capacity—256GB or 512GB.
- Check whether the unit is new, used, open-box, refurbished or renewed.
- Verify the seller, fulfillment method, warranty and return window.
- Check the final price after tax, coupons, memberships or configuration changes.
- Review delivery timing, color availability and U.S. keyboard/layout details.
- Do not rely on an indexed deal page if the retailer shows no stock or a different price.
Verdict
At $844–$849, the 16GB/256GB 13-inch M3 MacBook Air was an excellent Black Friday 2024 deal. In 2026, the “over $250 off” headline is historical evidence, not a current buying signal. Buy an M3 only when the live price is meaningfully below a comparable newer Air and the 256GB limitation fits your storage needs.
