In 2015, The Hunt offered a way to track down a jacket, dress, or pair of shoes from a photo—even when the image had no brand name or shopping link. The free iPhone and Android app relied on its users to identify items or suggest similar finds. It is best understood today as a historical example of community-powered shopping: the original app’s continued availability has not been verified.
What The Hunt was
GeekWire reviewed The Hunt on April 26, 2015, describing it as a free fashion-discovery app for iPhone and Android. Its premise was a familiar shopping frustration: you spot something appealing in public or in an online photo, but have no product name, label, or link to search for it.
Instead of relying only on keywords or image matching, The Hunt asked people to help. A user posted a picture and requested either the exact item or something similar. Other members searched for candidates and shared retailer links. The original review framed this as a kind of “fashion missed connection”: the item was visible, but the path to finding it was not. GeekWire’s April 2015 review describes the app’s features and limitations.
How a hunt worked
- Post an image. Upload a picture of the clothing or accessory you want to identify.
- Choose the kind of match. Ask for the exact item or for something similar, such as a lower-cost substitute.
- Wait for community replies. Other users investigate and post possible products, generally with retailer links.
- Review the suggestions. The asker can mark the answer that best fits as “perfect.”
- Follow the purchase link if you want to buy. A prominent buy button connected the answer to its retailer listing.
The process could turn a hard-to-describe visual clue into a useful lead. But a suggested product was not proof that it was the item in the photo, and a retailer link did not guarantee that the item was still available.
#1 Best Overall
- DISTINCTIVE TWIST ON THE JIGSAW: In this mystery puzzle, the full puzzle image is a secret until you complete the jigsaw, because it contains the crucial clues you need to unravel the mystery. Double the puzzles to solve = double the fun, especially for parties and cozy nights in.
- PERFECT BLEND FOR MYSTERY AND PUZZLE FANS: For anyone who loves jigsaws and classic mystery stories, this is the ultimate gift. The narrative and illustrations pay homage to beloved creators like Agatha Christie and Edward Gorey.
- COOL OBJECT: With an elegant box shaped like a book, this makes a special gift and an enviable coffee-table centerpiece.
- NOSTALGIC APPEAL: This mystery puzzle revamps a popular jigsaw format from the 1990s, inviting puzzlers to rediscover a nostalgic pastime.
- GORGEOUS ILLUSTRATION: The finished puzzle image is a sumptuous illustration full of rich color, hidden details, and lightly gothic humor.
Features beyond finding a product
Voting and saved items
The update covered by GeekWire added voting on useful answers and the ability to save products for later. Those features helped users sort suggestions and keep a possible purchase in mind without buying immediately.
“Style Me” advice
The app also had a “Style Me” option: users could share information and images about themselves, sometimes including a selfie, and ask the community for fashion suggestions. This was informal advice from other users, not professional styling or a guarantee that an item would fit or suit the asker.
Rank #2
Answering other people’s hunts
Members could contribute by looking for items requested by other users. The social model made participation part of the product: people seeking help could also become the people doing the searching.
A contemporaneous article reported more than 3 million shoppers worldwide, but that is a historical claim from the period, not a current audience figure. The 2015 report is the source for that estimate.

Where crowdsourcing helped—and where it fell short
Why human search could help
- Contributors could use visual context and fashion judgment, not just a product name or label.
- They could suggest a similar silhouette, a cheaper option, or a substitute when an exact match was elusive.
- Different contributors could bring different retailer knowledge and search strategies.
Why an answer was never guaranteed
- No response: The central weakness was dependence on other users noticing a post. GeekWire described the model’s reliance on community participation as both its advantage and its greatest weakness; a hunt could receive no answer.
- Wrong or approximate match: A proposed item could be mistaken, or merely similar when the asker wanted the exact product. Similarity is subjective.
- Limited availability: A discontinued, sold-out, vintage, or poorly photographed item could be difficult to identify or buy. Retail pages and stock can also change after a link is shared.
- Uneven category coverage: The reviewer said the community was predominantly women and that help with menswear was more limited. That was the reviewer’s observation about the community at the time, not an independently measured demographic statistic.
- Advice without personal context: A stranger’s styling suggestion may not account for someone’s fit, budget, dress code, or preferences.
As a result, The Hunt could provide a lead, not a guarantee of identification, fit, quality, authenticity, or a working purchase option. GeekWire also disclosed that it might earn revenue through affiliate partnerships, a reminder that a shopping link and an editorial identification are separate things.
Is The Hunt still available?
The documented product is the app reviewed in April 2015. The available information does not establish that this fashion-focused community app remains downloadable or operational in 2026. It also does not establish what happened to old accounts, posts, saved products, or retailer links. Its shutdown, ownership, and any rebrand are not confirmed here.
Several current services use “Hunt” in their names, but the name alone does not show that they continue the 2015 app:
- Hunt.com describes a fashion-concierge service that accepts screenshots or shopping briefs and offers product recommendations. Its current site says it searches more than 1,000 stores; that is the service’s own claim. Its workflow appears different from The Hunt’s community answers, and the site does not establish a connection to the 2015 app.
- JoinTheHunt.io is a location-based scavenger-hunt platform, not a fashion-identification service.
- Hunt Clothing Co. is a retailer-specific shopping app, not evidence that the original crowdsourced service survives.

Choose a method based on the clue you have and the kind of result you need. These options address the same broad shopping problem, but they are not verified continuations of The Hunt.
Best Value
- Classic Mystery Jigsaw Puzzles are more than just a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle - they're a murder mystery waiting to be solved
- READ about the shocking murder mystery in the included short story booklet
- ASSEMBLE the mystery puzzle and uncover hidden clues
- SOLVE the mystery with the secret clues hidden within the jigsaw puzzle
- Use the final pages of the storybook in a mirror to reveal the murderer!
- You have a screenshot: Try a current image-based fashion search or concierge. For example, Hunt.com says it accepts screenshots from social platforms and returns shopping options; treat its store-coverage statements as vendor claims.
- You suspect a particular retailer or brand: Use that retailer’s image-search feature if available, or ask the brand’s customer service team. These routes can be more direct when the item is from a current collection.
- The item may be sold out or vintage: Search resale marketplaces and use descriptive details such as era, fabric, cut, color, and distinctive hardware. Listings change, and resale availability does not by itself verify authenticity.
- You need human judgment: Ask a fashion-identification community, giving clear images and specific details. Replies can be helpful, but—as with The Hunt—speed and accuracy depend on who responds.
- You only need a visual lead: General visual-search tools may surface similar products. Treat results as candidates rather than proof of an exact match.
Check before buying
Finding a plausible product is only one part of the decision. Before paying, check that the seller is legitimate, the listing ships to your region, the item is in stock, and the final price includes shipping and any other charges. Review the return policy and measurements, and distinguish an exact identification from a visually similar alternative. For luxury goods, a community suggestion or image match is not authentication.
When uploading an image to any service or community, crop it to the item where possible. Remove faces, usernames, location details, and other personal information that is not needed to identify the clothing.
What The Hunt’s 2015 review tells us
The Hunt was an inventive early approach to a persistent problem: finding something you have seen but cannot name. Its human network could supply context and alternatives that a simple search might miss, while its dependence on that same network meant an answer might never come. The April 2015 review documents that product and its then-current features; it does not establish that the original app is available today.
