The best toys for a 5-year-old are the ones that fit the child’s interests and abilities while leaving room to make choices, invent ideas, and play in different ways. Building blocks, pretend-play props, puzzles, books, art materials, and age-appropriate active-play equipment can all offer useful starting points; no single toy is best for every child. A good toy does not have to be trendy or expensive, as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes in its guidance on choosing toys.
How to choose a toy that invites curiosity
Look for play that the child can direct rather than a toy with only one prescribed outcome. Open-ended materials can become different things in different games: blocks might be a tower, a bridge, or a pretend shop. The AAP recommends safe, developmentally appropriate toys and highlights the value of simple play that gives children opportunities to explore, imagine, and solve problems.
Use these questions to compare options:
- What kind of play does it invite? Building, make-believe, puzzles, creative making, or movement may appeal to different children.
- Can the child choose what to do with it? A toy that supports more than one idea can leave more room for child-led play.
- Does it fit this child? Consider current interests, abilities, and whether the child can use the toy as intended.
- Is it safe in the likely setting? Read age guidance and warnings, account for younger children in the home, and supervise when needed.
- Will it suit your budget and household? A simple, durable option—or materials already at home—may be a better fit than a costly trend.
CDC guidance for preschoolers ages 3–5 recommends age-appropriate play equipment and allowing children to choose what to play. That makes the child’s own interest a useful part of the decision, not a bonus to consider after buying.
Good toy categories for 5-year-olds
Building blocks and construction toys
Blocks are a versatile choice when a child enjoys making and remaking things. They can support open-ended play: a child might build a house, invent a vehicle, or combine structures with figures for a story. Choose a set whose pieces the child can handle and whose package age guidance fits. Check the specific product for small-part warnings and supervise as appropriate.

Pretend-play props
Costumes, figures, play food, and simple role-play props can give make-believe a starting point without deciding how the story must go. A book, household routine, or familiar place can also inspire a game. Favor props the child can use safely and in more than one way; check labels and supervise any item that calls for it.
Puzzles and books
Puzzles offer a focused challenge, while books can provide characters, places, and ideas to act out together. Match a puzzle to the child’s present interests and abilities rather than assuming every 5-year-old is ready for the same level. The AAP discusses block and puzzle play and recommends using books as a source of ideas for pretending together.

Creative materials
Art and making materials let children turn an idea into something they can alter or share. Select supplies suitable for the child’s age and ability, follow package warnings, and supervise when needed. The point is not a polished result; it is having materials the child can explore and use to express an idea.
Active-play equipment
Balls and other age-appropriate play equipment can invite movement and games a child helps shape. CDC includes balls as an example of play equipment for preschoolers. For ride-on toys, follow the product’s instructions and use safety gear such as a helmet, as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises.

Safety checks before buying or setting up a toy
A label for age 5 is guidance, not a guarantee that every child can safely use a particular toy. CPSC advises caregivers to follow age recommendations and package safety information, and to choose toys that suit the child’s interests and abilities. Check the actual product’s instructions and warnings, think about how it will be used, and supervise when the child needs help using it safely.
- Keep toys with small parts and small balls away from children younger than 3, as CPSC warns they can present choking hazards.
- Keep deflated balloons away from children younger than 8; CPSC identifies them as a suffocation danger.
- AAP guidance advises avoiding toys with button batteries and high-powered magnets.
- For riding toys, use recommended safety gear, including a helmet.
- Check product-specific warnings and current recalls before purchase or use.
In the United States, CPSC says ASTM F963-23 became effective April 20, 2024, and that toys intended for children 12 and under must be third-party tested and certified under applicable children’s product safety rules. What toys can—and cannot—tell you about development
Toys can offer opportunities to play, but they should not be treated as a way to guarantee a milestone or measure a child’s development. CDC defines developmental milestones as things 75% or more of children can do by a specified age. That figure describes how commonly an ability is reached, not the effect of a toy. CDC also says its milestone checklist is not a substitute for validated developmental screening. If you have concerns about a child’s development, discuss them with a healthcare professional.
