The Best Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis, According to Podiatrists

Podiatrists recommend matching plantar-fasciitis shoes to foot mechanics: stability for overpronation or flatter arches, and neutral cushioning for many high-arched or neutral feet. Here is how to assess support, fit and current model examples.

There is no single best shoe for plantar fasciitis. The most reliable choice matches your foot mechanics, symptoms and activity with a cushioned, supportive, stable shoe that fits securely. People with flatter arches or overpronation often need stability or motion-control shoes; people with high arches may prefer a neutral shoe with substantial cushioning.

The models below are examples cited in podiatrist-authored guidance, not guarantees of pain relief. Shoes can support conservative management, but they do not cure plantar fasciitis.

What to look for in a plantar-fasciitis shoe

Cushioning that reduces impact

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says a cushioned shoe or insert can reduce plantar-fascia tension and microtrauma. A thicker sole and additional cushioning may make standing and walking more comfortable, particularly on hard surfaces.

Heel and arch support suited to your foot

Footwear with both cushioning and heel-and-arch support can help manage symptoms. The right amount of support depends on your structure: a stability shoe may help control excessive inward rolling, while a neutral shoe may be more comfortable for a rigid or high-arched foot.

A stable heel counter and sole

Look for a firm, deep heel counter or shaped heel cup that holds your heel in place. The sole should resist excessive twisting; a shoe that folds or twists easily provides less mechanical support.

Heel-to-toe drop is an individual variable

Dr. Nicole Freels, DPM, recommends considering a small heel-to-toe drop to promote natural foot mechanics. However, other podiatrist guidance notes that a lower drop can increase Achilles-tendon and plantar-fascia loading for some people. Treat drop as a fit variable, not a universal target, and change gradually if you switch from a higher-drop shoe.

Fit matters as much as specifications

  • Leave enough room for your toes to spread without touching the front.
  • Make sure the heel does not slip when you walk.
  • Try shoes later in the day, when feet are often more swollen.
  • Wear the socks and, if applicable, the orthoses you will use with the shoes.

Which type of shoe fits your foot mechanics?

Foot pattern or need Most relevant shoe category Examples cited by podiatrist guidance What to assess in the store
Overpronation or flatter arches Stability or motion-control Brooks Adrenaline GTS; ASICS Gel-Kayano; New Balance 860 Guidance against excessive inward roll, a secure heel and a sole that does not twist easily
High arches or a neutral gait Neutral, highly cushioned HOKA Bondi; Brooks Ghost; New Balance 1080 Shock absorption, comfortable arch contour and enough width for the forefoot
Walking with built-in orthotic-style support Supportive walking shoe Vionic Walker Classic 2025 Whether the built-in support matches your arch and remains comfortable throughout a walk

Generations, widths and fits vary. A model that works for one person may aggravate another if its shape, support or cushioning does not match that person’s foot.

Podiatrist-cited shoe shortlist

Vionic Walker Classic 2025: supportive walking option

Achilles Foot and Ankle Center names the Vionic Walker Classic 2025 as a plantar-fasciitis pick and describes its built-in orthotic support. It is most relevant for readers seeking a structured walking shoe rather than a soft, minimally supportive sneaker. Check that the arch contour and heel hold feel comfortable before wearing it for long periods.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS, ASICS Gel-Kayano and New Balance 860: stability examples

These models are cited as stability or motion-control examples for overpronation or flatter arches. They may be a better starting point than a neutral shoe when your foot rolls inward and you want guidance from the shoe’s structure. Brooks Ghost and New Balance 1080: neutral-cushioning examples

Podiatrist guidance lists these as neutral cushioned options. They suit readers who need impact absorption without a pronounced motion-control system, including some people with higher arches. Evaluate arch comfort and heel security rather than choosing solely by softness.

How to choose between stability and cushioning

  1. Identify the problem you are trying to solve. If inward rolling or a flatter arch is prominent, start with stability options. If impact and pressure are the main complaints and your gait is neutral, start with neutral cushioning.
  2. Compare the heel and arch contact. The shoe should support the heel and arch without creating a sharp pressure point.
  3. Test torsional stability. Hold the heel and forefoot and gently twist. A shoe that resists moderate twisting generally offers more structural support than one that collapses easily.
  4. Walk on a firm surface. Check for heel slipping, toe contact, rubbing and whether the transition from heel to toe feels smooth.
  5. Recheck after several minutes. Plantar-fascia discomfort can appear after repeated steps, so do not judge fit from a single stride.

Orthotics, heel pads and shoe replacement

The AAOS identifies soft silicone heel pads and both pre-made and custom orthotics as potentially helpful additions. An insert can be useful when a shoe is otherwise comfortable but lacks the support your foot needs; it must not crowd the toes or lift the heel enough to cause slipping.

NHS guidance says a podiatrist can recommend insoles and appropriate shoes. Athletic shoes should be replaced before their cushioning and support become visibly worn or unsupportive. Rotate pairs if possible and inspect the outsole, midsole compression and heel counter for deterioration.

When shoes are not enough

Arrange a podiatry assessment when pain persists despite sensible footwear changes, when the diagnosis is uncertain, or when symptoms interfere with normal activity. A clinician can assess your foot mechanics and recommend an insole, shoe category or other treatment. Seek prompt medical advice for marked swelling, redness, numbness, sudden injury or inability to bear weight.

A practical fitting checklist

  • Shop later in the day.
  • Bring your usual socks and orthoses.
  • Compare both feet and fit the larger foot.
  • Leave toe room without allowing the foot to slide forward.
  • Check that the heel counter is firm and the heel stays seated.
  • Choose cushioning appropriate for your activity, whether walking, standing or running.
  • Wear a new pair for short sessions first and increase use as comfort allows.

What podiatrists agree on—and what they do not

Guidance consistently supports cushioning, heel and arch support, a stable heel counter, torsional resistance and a secure fit. It does not establish one commercial model as superior for every patient, and there is no authoritative head-to-head clinical trial proving that one listed shoe works best for all plantar-fasciitis sufferers. Individual assessment remains more dependable than a universal ranking.
