Memorial Day promotions often start before the holiday weekend, but “free” carrier phones, trade-in credits and financing can cost more than an unlocked purchase. The final price depends on the exact storage tier, seller, taxes, activation, service plan and accessories.

The OnePlus and Galaxy prices were reported by PhoneArena. Neither should be presented as a current sale without a fresh check. WhistleOut’s Memorial Day guide also notes that retailers commonly launch promotions before the holiday itself.
Smartphone deals: unlocked value versus carrier “free”
Best unlocked value: OnePlus 15 (historical)
PhoneArena recorded the OnePlus 15 at $849.99, with code EXTRA100 reportedly bringing it to $749.99 during Memorial Day coverage published May 22, 2026. That was an unlocked-style, immediate-price comparison rather than a multi-year bill-credit promise. Confirm the storage configuration, U.S. bands, eSIM and physical-SIM support, warranty and return policy on the official product page before treating a similar price as a bargain.

Flagship and camera alternatives
The source roundup discussed Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+, and iPhone 14 and 15. Those models can still make sense when a sale price is materially below a current successor, but the exact retailer, storage tier, update-support period and condition must be verified. A large percentage discount on an older phone is not automatically better than a smaller discount on a newer model with longer support.
Budget choices
Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, Google Pixel 7a or 8a, OnePlus 12R and Motorola Moto G models target different budgets. Compare display, camera, battery, carrier compatibility and software support rather than headline savings. Check whether the listing is new, refurbished, open-box or marketplace-sold.

When a carrier deal is actually cheaper
A carrier offer can beat an unlocked price if you already need the qualifying plan, have an eligible trade-in and will remain with that carrier for the entire credit period. Otherwise calculate:
Total effective cost = device payments after credits + required plan premium + activation and upgrade fees + taxes and fees − trade-in value.

For example, a $900 phone with $900 in credits is not free if the qualifying plan costs $25 more per month than your existing plan for 36 months: the plan premium alone is $900, before taxes or activation. Credits may stop when you leave the carrier, change to an ineligible plan or pay off the device early. “Free” generally means monthly payments are offset over time, not that you receive an unrestricted phone at no cost.
Choose unlocked when
- You use a low-cost carrier or expect to switch.
- You travel internationally and need flexibility.
- You prefer an immediate discount over a 24- or 36-month commitment.
Choose a carrier promotion when
- You already pay for the required plan.
- Your trade-in qualifies for the advertised maximum.
- You are unlikely to leave, change plans or upgrade before credits finish.
Tablet deals by use case
Kids, streaming and reading
Entry-level iPads, Amazon Fire tablets and Samsung Galaxy Tab A models suit video, books, travel and child entertainment. Fire tablets can be compelling when substantially cheaper, but their app ecosystem is more limited. Check parental controls, storage and warranty, and confirm whether the model is Wi-Fi-only or cellular.

Schoolwork and general use
The iPad 10th generation, iPad Air with M1 or M2, Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Lenovo Tab P11-series devices were among the models discussed. iPad is usually the safer choice for long software support, app selection and resale value; Samsung or Lenovo may offer expandable storage, Android integration or an included stylus.
Creative work and note-taking
An iPad Air or higher-end Samsung tablet provides more headroom for creative apps. Verify whether a stylus is included. A keyboard, stylus, case and charger can turn a low tablet price into an expensive bundle, so compare the complete setup rather than the tablet alone.

A detachable Chromebook may exclude its keyboard. A tablet may need a keyboard, stylus, case and extra storage before it can replace a laptop. If you need Windows or macOS software, neither platform is a substitute.

Lenovo’s Memorial Day coverage included Chromebooks, laptops, 2-in-1s, tablets and accessories; its guidance emphasizes processor, RAM, storage, screen and battery requirements rather than discount percentage alone. Use the live Lenovo deals page for current inventory.
Specifications worth paying for
- 8GB RAM for regular multitasking; 4GB is best reserved for light use.
- A recent processor, adequate storage and USB-C charging.
- A bright, preferably high-resolution screen and comfortable keyboard.
- Good webcam, Wi-Fi standard, port selection and manageable weight.
- Touchscreen or convertible hinge when tablet mode is useful.
Auto Update Expiration
Check Google’s ChromeOS Auto Update Expiration date for the exact model before paying. A cheap Chromebook with little support remaining, 32GB storage or an old processor can be worse value than a newer model with a smaller percentage discount. Model-specific expiration dates were not established for the devices named in the seasonal roundup, so verify them on the product listing or Google’s support information.
How to screen out a bad sale
- Identify the exact configuration. Record storage, RAM, color, connectivity and model number.
- Confirm the seller and condition. Distinguish manufacturer-direct, authorized retailer, marketplace, refurbished and open-box listings.
- Calculate the complete cost. Add taxes, shipping, membership, activation, financing interest and required accessories.
- Read the return and warranty terms. Check restocking fees and who handles repairs.
- Compare support life. For phones and tablets, verify the manufacturer’s policy; for Chromebooks, check Auto Update Expiration.
- Separate instant savings from credits. Write down trade-in condition rules, bill-credit duration and eligible plans.
Should you buy now or wait?
Buy when you need the device, the configuration is clearly discounted against several reputable sellers and the support period is adequate. Wait when the apparent saving requires a pricier service plan, the model is near replacement, accessories erase the discount, the seller is unclear or the Chromebook has a short update window. Because Memorial Day 2026 has passed, do not use “last call” language or a May price as a current offer; compare today’s listing with the historical benchmark instead.
