How to choose a leather jacket that suits your wardrobe
Start with how and when you expect to wear it. A simple bomber or racer is generally easier to pair with everyday clothes; a biker, western, studded, or distressed design makes a stronger statement. Consider what you will wear underneath, too: a light lining is more suited to transitional weather, while a shearling or insulated construction is intended for colder conditions. The style name alone does not establish warmth.
Then compare the garment itself rather than relying on its label or product photographs. Check its composition, measurements, construction, lining, fastening, pockets, and care instructions. Natural leather can vary in grain, shade, and surface; such variation is not automatically a defect. Faux or vegan leather is synthetic and should not be mistaken for genuine leather.
Material: weight, feel, and care
| Material | Typical character | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Cowhide | Often substantial and structured, with pronounced grain. | Choose it when you want a firmer feel or a more structured biker or racer look; compare weight and flexibility on the specific jacket. |
| Lambskin | Often softer, smoother, more supple, and lighter, with a flexible drape. | Useful for a softer, more fashion-focused silhouette; softness alone does not prove quality. |
| Sheepskin or shearling | Can be soft and flexible. Warmth depends on the jacket’s construction and finish. | Check the lining and construction rather than assuming every sheepskin jacket is insulated. |
| Suede | Brushed, matte surface with a relaxed texture. | Its moisture and stain care differs from smooth leather; follow the garment’s care instructions. |
| Faux or vegan leather | Synthetic material designed to reproduce aspects of leather’s appearance. | Compare it as a synthetic alternative, not as genuine leather. |
These are broad material tendencies, not guarantees about an individual jacket’s comfort, durability, or performance. Check the product’s stated composition and construction.

Cut: how much visual character do you want?
- Biker: Often has an asymmetric zip, broad lapels, multiple zipped pockets, and visible hardware. It creates a more assertive look.
- Bomber: Usually shorter and more relaxed, making it a versatile everyday option and potentially leaving room for layers.
- Racer: Streamlined and relatively minimal, with less hardware than a traditional biker.
Fit and construction checks
- Use the specific product’s measurement chart; sizing labels are not consistent across brands.
- Check that the shoulder seams sit where intended, the jacket fastens without excessive pulling, and the sleeves are the right length.
- Move your arms and try the layers you expect to wear beneath it. Do not size up automatically because structured leather feels firm at first.
- Inspect stitching and panel construction, zipper and hardware function, lining, pocket placement, cuffs, collar, adjustments, and fastening quality.
- Choose details that work with your wardrobe; extra hardware or pockets do not automatically make a jacket a better buy.

Verify each product’s current material label before comparing it with natural leather.

Woman & Home’s autumn coverage published 27 September 2026 featured bombers and tailored silhouettes alongside classic biker cuts, including brown, chocolate, and burgundy choices. That is the publication’s trend selection, not evidence of a universal preference or sales trend. Its February guide also included classic black and tan as well as seasonal colours; choose a colour for how it fits your wardrobe, not solely because it is presented as current.

Leather-jacket care
- Store leather in a cool, dry place. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and heat, and do not put it away damp.
- If smooth leather gets wet, let it dry naturally. Follow the jacket’s own care guidance.
- For light cleaning of smooth leather, British GQ suggests a damp-cloth wipe; it advises against machine-washing leather and recommends specialist leather dry cleaning for heavy soiling.
- Suede has different care needs from smooth leather. Do not treat care products or methods as interchangeable; follow the garment’s instructions.
