Best all-around choice: the HydraPak Stow 500 ml combines a 40 g empty weight, roll-up storage, a self-sealing nozzle and compatibility with most 28 mm threaded water filters. Choose the Stow 350 ml for the smallest load, the Stow 1 liter for more capacity, or the Nomader for a more structured bottle that is easier to hold.
Current manufacturer documentation provides enough model-level information for five responsible picks, not six. No attributable independent leak, durability or taste-testing protocol is documented here, so these are specification-based recommendations rather than claims that the bottles were hands-on tested.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
Published material and design claims are not the same as independent testing. A manufacturer statement about an airtight seal or a self-sealing nozzle describes intended design performance; it does not establish how a bottle performs after repeated drops, washes or use upside down. A genuinely “tested” comparison would need current samples and repeatable checks for leaks, cap operation, filling speed, cleaning access, taste retention and packed dimensions.
The five models below are still meaningfully different. Empty weight, capacity, packability, mouth design and filter threads matter more than a generic “collapsible” label.

The five best-supported choices
HydraPak Stow 500 ml: best all-around ultralight bottle
At 40 g and 500 ml, the Stow 500 ml offers a practical middle ground between pocketable size and useful capacity. HydraPak says it can flatten or roll into its bail handle, so it occupies little space once empty. Its high-flow silicone nozzle is self-sealing and sits under a flip-top cap, a combination intended to reduce accidental spills while you carry it.
It also accepts most 28 mm threaded filters, which makes it the strongest choice here for hikers who may need to draw and filter water away from a tap. The trade-off is that the nozzle-and-cap assembly gives you less direct access than a wide-mouth bottle when scrubbing or drying the interior.
HydraPak Stow 350 ml: smallest ultralight option
The 350 ml Stow weighs 35 g, only 5 g less than the 500 ml version, but takes less liquid and fits more easily into a small pocket. It has the same basic roll-up format, flip-top cap, bail handle and compatibility with most 28 mm threaded filters.
Choose it for short walks, races, children’s day packs or as a backup container. It is not the efficient choice when you routinely need half a liter or more between refills.

HydraPak Stow 1 liter: higher capacity for longer outings
The 1 liter Stow is the capacity-first option in HydraPak’s collapsible range. The product information documents a BPA- and PVC-free bottle and 28 mm filter compatibility. Current weight, packed dimensions and some exact closure details are not stated consistently enough to compare numerically with the 350 ml and 500 ml models.
That missing weight information matters: a one-liter bottle can reduce refill stops, but you should check the exact regional listing before buying if pack weight or packed volume is critical.
Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle: best structured silicone design
Nomader holds 740 ml when topped off, with measurement marks to 650 ml, and weighs 200 g empty. Its flexible silicone body is surrounded by a more rigid sleeve, so it is easier to grip and set down than a very soft film bottle. It can roll or flatten for storage, but will not disappear into a bail handle as compactly as a HydraPak Stow.
The wide mouth helps with filling and interior access. A covered hinged spout keeps the drinking opening protected between sips. Nomader states that its “patented screw cap and lid design guarantees a secure airtight seal”; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent leak-test result. The bottle is listed as dishwasher-safe and heat-resistant and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Platypus flexible bottle: flexible-film alternative
Cascade Designs describes Platypus flexible bottles as lightweight, portable and reusable, with materials free of BPA, BPS and phthalates. This category is attractive when the bottle must fold nearly flat in a pack, but the exact SoftBottle model determines capacity, closure, mouth size and weight. Those model-level specifications should be confirmed on the current product page before treating one as the best choice.

Start with the amount you actually carry
- Choose 350 ml when low weight and pocketability matter more than refill interval.
- Choose 500 ml for a general hiking, commuting or travel bottle.
- Choose 1 liter when water access is uncertain and the extra capacity justifies checking the exact bottle weight.
- Choose Nomader’s 740 ml topped-off capacity when a stable, easy-to-hold form is more useful than minimum weight.
Separate empty-state packability from filled stability
A bottle that rolls tightly when empty can be awkward to set down when full. HydraPak’s bail handle gives the Stow bottles a way to attach or contain the rolled bottle. Nomader’s sleeve adds structure and grip but also explains its much higher 200 g empty weight.
Match the closure to your drinking habits
The Stow’s flip-top cap and self-sealing nozzle favor quick drinking with a protected opening. Nomader’s wide mouth and covered spout favor filling, pouring and access for cleaning. Neither design should be called leakproof without a documented test under defined conditions.
Check filter compatibility before a hike
HydraPak documents compatibility between the Stow line and most 28 mm threaded filters. That is a specific advantage for backcountry use. Do not assume a Nomader or Platypus closure will fit a filter simply because the bottle is collapsible; the relevant thread specification must be stated for the exact model.
Understand material and safety claims
Nomader identifies BPA-free food-grade materials. HydraPak identifies TPU, polypropylene and silicone in the Stow construction and describes the 1 liter model as BPA- and PVC-free. Platypus describes its flexible bottles as free of BPA, BPS and phthalates. These are published material claims, not laboratory results about taste, chemical migration or long-term wear.
