The best cloud-storage service depends on what you need it to do: collaborate on documents, sync files across devices, share securely, or recover from data loss. For most people who work together in documents, start with Google Drive; choose OneDrive if Microsoft 365 is already part of your budget, iCloud+ for an Apple household, Dropbox for file syncing, Sync.com or Proton Drive for privacy-led sharing, IDrive for backup, and Box for business administration. Prices and plan details below reflect the US signals available around August 16–18, 2026; check the linked provider page before buying because regional prices, promotions, taxes, and renewal terms can change.

Quick picks: which cloud-storage service should you choose?

Service Best starting point Why choose it Main trade-off
Google Drive / Google One Everyday collaboration Works closely with Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, and Photos; browser-friendly sharing Ordinary Drive files are not end-to-end encrypted
OneDrive / Microsoft 365 Microsoft 365 users Storage is bundled with Microsoft apps, plus Windows integration and recovery features Less compelling if you will not use the included Microsoft services
iCloud+ Apple households Integrates with Apple devices, Photos, and device backups; family sharing is available Less suited to mixed-platform teams and advanced collaboration
Dropbox Cross-platform file syncing Mature sync, sharing, versioning, and integrations Only 2 GB on Basic; paid prices should be checked live
Sync.com Private file sharing Encrypted sharing with controls such as passwords, expiration, and revocation No Linux app in current comparison coverage; smaller productivity ecosystem
Proton Drive Privacy-focused users Client-side/end-to-end encryption and Proton Docs and Sheets Fewer mainstream integrations than larger platforms
pCloud Media sharing and lifetime-plan shoppers Media features, branded links, remote access, and subscription or lifetime positioning Built-in document editing is limited; client-side encryption is an add-on
Box Business content governance Permissions, administration, integrations, and enterprise controls Often more than a personal user needs
IDrive Backup across devices Backup-first tools, snapshots, sharing, and recovery options More involved than a simple sync-and-share service

There is no objective universal winner. TechRadar currently ranks IDrive first overall, while Cloudwards highlights Sync.com for file sharing; those judgments reflect different priorities, not a single agreed ranking. See TechRadar’s comparison and Cloudwards’ file-sharing comparison.

First decide whether you need storage, sync, backup, sharing, or collaboration

  • Storage means files are held remotely.
  • Synchronization keeps selected files or folders consistent across devices. A deletion or corrupted file can sync too.
  • Backup creates recoverable copies, often with versions, snapshots, or device-level protection.
  • File sharing gives someone access by invitation, link, or shared workspace.
  • Collaboration adds features such as simultaneous editing, comments, workflow, and centralized permissions.

These jobs overlap, but a sync folder is not automatically a complete backup. Keep an independent copy of irreplaceable files, and check what a service can restore after accidental deletion or ransomware.

Compare prices and storage without being misled

Prices below are US figures where the official page exposed them, checked around August 16–18, 2026. They are not a guarantee of current checkout prices. The Google One page showed localized euro pricing during that check, so no US paid price is stated here. Unlisted prices are not established in the cited information; confirm them on the provider’s current US buying page.

Why the cheapest cost per terabyte may not be the best deal

Compare the usable quota, billing interval, renewal price, number of included users, and whether you need the bundled apps. Google’s quota is shared with Gmail and Photos; Apple’s iCloud storage includes backups and photos. Microsoft 365 can make sense for someone who uses Word, Excel, Outlook, or Teams, but not necessarily for someone seeking storage alone. A promotional rate, annualized monthly figure, family allowance, and lifetime purchase are different kinds of offers.

What each service is best at

Google Drive / Google One: best for mainstream collaboration

Choose Google Drive if your work happens in Docs, Sheets, and Slides or you already rely on Gmail and Google Photos. It is a strong browser-first option for inviting collaborators and sharing working documents. Google explains its sharing workflow in Drive Help. Its ordinary files are not end-to-end encrypted, so it is not the default choice for files that must remain unreadable to the provider.

SSK Portable SSD 1TB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

OneDrive / Microsoft 365: best when you use Microsoft apps

OneDrive is the natural fit for Windows and Microsoft 365 users who want storage alongside desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and related services. The Personal plan includes 1 TB; Family allocates 1 TB to each of up to six people. OneDrive also offers Personal Vault, ransomware detection, file recovery, and cross-device access. If the apps have no value to you, compare storage-only alternatives rather than treating the bundle as automatically cheaper.

Dropbox: best for file-centric syncing

Dropbox remains a good starting point when reliable-feeling cross-platform file synchronization, versioning, sharing, and integrations matter more than an office suite. Its Basic tier provides 2 GB, so it is not an especially generous free storage option. The accessible official page did not establish all current paid US prices; check the live plan page before choosing it on cost.

iCloud+: best for an Apple household

iCloud+ fits people using iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Photos, and device backups. Family sharing and features such as Private Relay and Hide My Email add value beyond a folder in the cloud. It is less attractive as a general-purpose collaboration hub for a mixed Windows-and-Android team, and Apple-device integration should not be confused with the document collaboration offered by Google or Microsoft.

Sandisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 2000MB/s Transfer Speeds-New Model
  • NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
  • IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
  • POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

Sync.com: best for privacy-led sharing

Sync.com is designed around encrypted storage and sharing controls. Current Cloudwards coverage identifies password protection, link expiration and revocation, download restrictions, encrypted links, and folder collaboration among its strengths. Some advanced controls require a higher-tier Pro Solo plan, and current comparison coverage notes there is no Linux app. Its team pricing page displays per-user offers with a three-user minimum; confirm promotion and renewal terms before committing.

Proton Drive: best for a privacy-focused ecosystem

Proton Drive offers client-side/end-to-end encryption, web access, desktop apps for Windows and macOS, mobile apps for iOS and Android, and a CLI option, according to its official product page. Proton Docs and Sheets make it more collaborative than a storage-only vault, but its ecosystem and third-party integrations are smaller than Google’s, Microsoft’s, or Dropbox’s. Encryption can also narrow search, previews, recovery, or real-time collaboration capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

pCloud: best for media sharing and people weighing lifetime storage

pCloud emphasizes photo and media management, remote access, sharing, branded links, backup, and recovery. It offers subscription and lifetime-plan positioning, but current US prices were not reliably exposed in the available official page. Built-in document editing is limited, and client-side encryption is separately positioned rather than the default for ordinary storage. Treat a lifetime plan as a prepaid offer dependent on the provider continuing to operate and honor its terms.

Box: best for centralized business controls

Box is aimed more at organizations needing permissions, administration, integrations, workflows, and enterprise controls than at consumers looking for inexpensive personal storage. Its pricing page frames the product around business and enterprise use. Box says 10 GB can hold roughly 2,000 songs or pictures or more than 50,000 documents, but actual capacity varies substantially by file type. The accessible page did not establish a complete US price comparison.

IDrive: best when backup is the main job

IDrive is a backup-oriented service with storage and sharing features, support across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android in current TechRadar coverage, plus snapshots and recovery options. It suits people protecting multiple devices better than people who mainly want a frictionless live document collaboration space. Verify the official offer and renewal cost; introductory pricing in this category can change sharply.

Specialist alternatives: Tresorit and MEGA

For highly confidential business sharing, compare Tresorit with Box and business-tier Sync.com rather than assuming a consumer privacy plan provides administrative or compliance features. MEGA is another privacy-oriented option, but verify its current storage allowance, bandwidth limits, and plan terms before choosing it based on free capacity. The cited material does not establish current comparable prices for either service.

How to judge security and privacy

“Encrypted” alone does not tell you whether the provider can read a file. Encryption in transit protects data moving between your device and a service; encryption at rest protects stored data. In many mainstream services, the provider manages the keys, which can support search, previews, recovery, and collaboration but means this is not the same as end-to-end encryption. Client-side or end-to-end encryption is intended to keep readable file contents out of the provider’s reach, though the precise treatment of filenames, metadata, sharing, and recovery depends on the product.

  • Protect the account: use a unique password and available two-factor authentication or passkeys; keep recovery methods current and review security alerts and trusted devices.
  • Protect each share: prefer invite-only access for sensitive material; otherwise use a password and expiration when available, disable downloads if the plan permits, and revoke links that are no longer needed.
  • Understand recovery: with client-side encryption, a lost password or recovery key may make data unrecoverable. Confirm how recovery works before placing the only copy of important files there.
  • For business, check governance: audit logs, retention, legal holds, data residency, compliance certifications, provisioning, and support can matter more than a consumer plan’s storage quota.

Cloudwards describes encrypted-sharing controls as a core distinction among services, while TechRadar notes that ordinary Google Drive files are not end-to-end encrypted. See Cloudwards and TechRadar.

Choose sharing controls for the files you actually send

A “copy link” button is not enough to assess secure sharing. Before choosing a service for clients, family, or external collaborators, check whether it supports the controls you need:

  • Invite-only access as well as link sharing, with viewer, commenter, editor, or download-only roles where relevant.
  • Password protection, expiration dates, link revocation, and download restrictions.
  • File requests, shared-folder permissions, activity notifications, and comments.
  • Recipient access without an account, if your recipients cannot be expected to sign up.
  • Individual file-size limits, transfer quotas, link bandwidth caps, and resumable uploads for large media.

Share a specific file instead of a whole folder when possible, review inherited permissions, avoid leaving permanent links posted publicly, and revoke access once a project ends. For video, photography, CAD, and other large files, verify current limits before uploading; the available comparison does not establish uniform limits across the services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the platform and workflow before paying

Check for the exact desktop and mobile apps you need, browser access, Linux support, selective sync, online-only files, offline access, and photo backup. A service that works well on Windows and macOS may not have a Linux app; Sync.com is specifically noted as lacking one in current comparison coverage. Also check the number of supported devices, whether an external drive or NAS workflow is covered, and how much local disk space online-only files save.

For Apple-only households, iCloud’s device and photo integration can outweigh its weaker fit for mixed-platform collaboration. A Linux user or a team mixing operating systems should treat platform support as a deciding criterion, not an afterthought.

Choose in five minutes

  1. Need live document co-editing? Start with Google Drive; choose OneDrive if your household or team already uses Microsoft 365.
  2. Mostly want computer-to-computer file sync? Compare Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, and Sync.com against your operating systems and sharing needs.
  3. Mostly want a recoverable backup of several devices? Start with IDrive and confirm what devices, versions, snapshots, and restore workflows your plan covers.
  4. Share client files and want provider-inaccessible contents? Compare Sync.com and Proton Drive; verify recovery, recipient usability, Linux support, and any needed admin features.
  5. Deeply invested in Apple devices? Start with iCloud+ and calculate photo, file, and backup use against the shared quota.
  6. Need organization-wide governance or compliance controls? Compare Box, Microsoft 365/SharePoint, Google Workspace, Tresorit, and business-tier Sync.com rather than personal plans.
