Start with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, shade, protective clothing, water, a towel or blanket, seating and a bag. Add a cooler or wagon when the outing or walk calls for them. For umbrellas, prioritize a secure anchor and take wind seriously.
What should you bring to the beach?
A practical beach kit covers sun protection, comfort, hydration and carrying. REI’s beach checklist includes a towel, shade, sunscreen, seating, drinks or a cooler, a bag, SPF-rated lip balm and UPF-rated clothing. Treat that as a starting point, then pare it back to what you can manage on your route from parking or transit to the shore.
- Core kit: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, protective clothing, a towel, shade, water or other drinks, seating and a bag.
- Useful additions: a soft-sided cooler for food and drinks, a sand-resistant blanket for sitting, or a wagon if you have a larger load or a long walk.
- Optional entertainment: a waterproof phone pouch or portable speaker. These are conveniences, not essentials.
REI’s checklist is available at REI’s beach packing list.
How to choose beach gear that works for your trip
Think about the whole journey: how far you will carry the kit, what the ground is like, how much setup it needs and whether you can pack it away easily. A chair or cooler that is comfortable at the beach can still be a poor choice if it is awkward to haul. Retailer guidance suggests a wagon for moving chairs, coolers and other gear, but the available material does not establish that every wagon rolls well over soft sand.

| Gear | What to compare | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Umbrella or shelter | Coverage, anchoring, wind stability, setup and packed size | Choose a beach umbrella with a sand anchor if you want a compact shade option; consider a tent or canopy for broader coverage, while following safe-use guidance. |
| Chair | Comfort, carry method, weight, adjustability, folding and setup | A backpack-style chair may make a longer carry easier; balance convenience against the chair’s comfort and features. |
| Towel or blanket | Sand release, drying time, absorbency, size and bulk | Choose a drying towel for drying off; choose a blanket when the main job is creating a place to sit or lie down. |
| Cooler | Capacity, insulation needs and carry comfort | A soft-sided model may suit a lighter load. No comparative temperature-retention result is established by the cited material. |
| Bag or wagon | Capacity, cleanability, stability, weight and performance on your route | Use a bag for a manageable load; consider a wagon when the amount to move warrants it. |
Shade and sunscreen: use more than one layer of protection
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises using broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Follow the sunscreen’s label, and combine it with shade and protective clothing rather than relying on an umbrella alone. The AAD says about 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime; this is the organization’s general U.S. lifetime statistic, not a beach-specific risk estimate. See the AAD’s sunscreen guidance.
For shade, compare how much area a shelter covers and how securely it can be anchored. An umbrella, tent or canopy does not make every wind condition safe. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes beach umbrella safety guidance at its beach umbrella safety page.

Why an umbrella’s anchor matters
Wind stability is a key factor when choosing a beach umbrella. In a July 2, 2026 report, WESH relayed Consumer Reports’ testing and quoted CR representative Jodhaira Rodriguez: “One of the most important things that we found in our testing of beach umbrellas is that if they have an anchor built in, it makes them a lot more stable against wind.” An anchor can improve stability; it does not guarantee an umbrella is safe in all wind conditions. Read WESH’s report on beach essentials testing for its account of the methods and findings.
How to judge towels, blankets and chairs
Sand resistance and quick drying matter, but they are different qualities. A towel needs to absorb water and dry off; a blanket’s main role may be to provide ground cover and shed sand. Compare each item against its intended use instead of assuming one fabric does both jobs equally well.

WESH reported that Consumer Reports assessed towel sand resistance by rolling a five-pound weight over the fabric to work sand into it, then shaking and weighing the towel. Its report also says chair testing included sitting for more than an hour to assess comfort and heat. These are testing details attributed to WESH’s account of CR’s methods, not tests conducted for this article.
Consumer Reports’ evaluations, as reported by Quartz on August 24, 2026, covered 10 beach-essentials categories. Quartz described umbrella assessments of shade and wind stability, towel sand resistance and chair comfort. Because this is secondary reporting, those methods and findings are attributed to Quartz’s report about Consumer Reports.

Before adding one more accessory, consider how many items you will carry at once and how the load changes when towels are wet or the cooler is full. Keep the kit focused on comfort and protection first; add transport help or entertainment only when it solves a real problem for your trip.
