Travel + Leisure named nine camping mattresses and sleeping pads for different needs, from car-camping comfort to backpacking portability. Its roundup says the publication tested 22 air mattresses and sleeping pads over two years at campgrounds around the United States; those are Travel + Leisure’s test claims, not independent testing for this article. The right pick depends on how warm, comfortable, portable, and affordable you need your sleep setup to be.
The nine picks at a glance

These are distinct use-case winners, not a claim that one model is best for every camper. See Travel + Leisure’s roundup for its complete product coverage and retailer links.
Choose a mattress or pad for the trip
Car camping: prioritize comfort and space
If you can carry gear from the vehicle to the campsite, a thicker, heavier mattress may be a reasonable trade for a more bed-like feel. The MondoKing 3D’s listed 4.25-inch thickness and its tester’s comfort report illustrate that approach, but one tester’s experience cannot predict how every sleeper will feel. Consider your sleeping position and whether your hips or shoulders press through to the ground.
Backpacking: prioritize carry weight and packability
When you must carry your sleep system over distance, a slimmer, lighter pad is generally more practical than a bulky car-camping mattress. REI advises matching a pad to the activity and distance carried. A portability-oriented pad may not offer the same thickness or plushness as a car-camping mattress.

Sharing a sleep surface
A double mattress can simplify sleeping arrangements for two, but check its dimensions, packed size, and total weight against your tent and gear-carrying plan. Travel + Leisure names the Intex TruAire Dura-Beam Camping Mat with USB Pump its double pick.
Compare warmth, comfort, setup, and cost
Warmth: look at insulation, not just your sleeping bag
Heat can transfer from your body into cold ground, so a sleeping bag alone does not answer whether your sleep system is warm enough. R-value describes resistance to heat transfer through a pad; higher values generally indicate more insulation. Compare the pad’s rating with the conditions you expect, and check how the rating was established. Outdoor Life identifies ASTM F3340 as its preferred gold-standard method for third-party, apples-to-apples comparisons. A rating or temperature guideline is not a guarantee that you will be comfortable.

- COMFORT: With a bed height of 22" this luxurious and unique dual-layer air pocket system contours to your body for supreme comfort; with a velvety top and sides that are soft to the touch, and resist punctures and abrasions; on-the-go carry bag included.Amperage : 0.65 A
- UNIQUE EDGE CONSTRUCTION – Dura-Beam Air Mattresses are designed with a unique edge construction to withstand the weight of the sleeper without sagging and is 100% more durable, 35% more supportive and 15% lighter than a traditional airbed
- LUMBAR SUPPORT – Horizontally positioned Dura-Beams provides 50% greater individual strand count for an improved full body support; Fiber-Tech Construction is comprised of thousands of high-strength polyester fibers for amazing durability and strength
- BUILT-IN AC ELECTRIC PUMP – High-Powered built-in electric pump (110-120V) for hassle-free inflation and deflation; users can easily and quickly set up the air mattress when they need it and then deflate it (Approximate inflation time 4.75 minutes)
- STRETCH – At first inflation the material will STRETCH, which is sometimes misinterpreted as leaking; You will sense a loss of pressure, that's just the bed stretching, simply re-inflate the bed again; the bed will fully settle within 2-3 nights
Outdoor Life cautions that ordinary household airbeds without ground insulation are poor choices for cold conditions. That is different from a camping-specific mattress or pad designed with insulation. Its camping air mattress guide discusses its testing criteria and warmth considerations.
Comfort: account for how you sleep
Thickness can help keep hips and shoulders from bottoming out, while width and length determine how much room you have to shift position. Travel + Leisure’s MondoKing assessment is a specific tester’s subjective finding, not a universal comfort rating. If you are choosing between a compact pad and a thicker mattress, decide whether carry convenience or cushioning matters more for this trip.

Inflation and pack-down: check what you must carry
Inflation methods vary: a product may be self-inflating, use a pump sack, or require a separate pump. “Self-inflating” does not necessarily mean no top-off is needed. Check the product’s instructions and bring the equipment it requires. The MondoKing 3D, for example, is described as inflating with its included stuff sack.
Durability, warranty, and price
Compare construction and warranty details alongside comfort, warmth, and ease of use. The roundup’s “most durable” label for the ALPS Mountaineering Outback is a relative editorial pick, not evidence that it cannot be punctured or will last a particular number of years. How to narrow the choice
- Decide how far you will carry it. For a campsite near your car, a heavier, thicker mattress may be manageable. For a long backpack, put weight and packed size first.
- Set your warmth requirement. Consider expected ground and nighttime conditions, then compare insulation ratings and their test basis.
- Choose your comfort trade-off. Account for sleeping position, mattress dimensions, and whether pressure points might reach the ground.
- Check the complete setup. Confirm inflation method, included pump or sack, packed dimensions, and whether the mattress fits your tent.
- Compare total value. Review current price, warranty, and durability information without treating a category award as a guarantee.
REI Co-op product information specialist Ingrid Johnson puts the trade-off plainly: “There is no sleeping pad that is good at everything, so you have to prioritize the two qualities that are most important for your needs and let the others go.” REI’s sleeping pad guide explains how to weigh activity, warmth, and comfort.
What the awards do—and do not—tell you
Travel + Leisure’s nine labels help sort products by intended use, but the available descriptions do not provide comparable specifications for every winner. In particular, the roundup details the MondoKing 3D’s Large size but does not establish matching dimensions, weights, or R-values for the other eight products here. Treat those category names as a shortlist, then verify model-specific fit, insulation, inflation needs, and current warranty and price information before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a camping air mattress and a sleeping pad?
Camping air mattresses tend to be thicker and often heavier, making them a better fit for car camping. Sleeping pads are generally slimmer and lighter, so they are more practical to carry for backpacking.
Are air mattresses good for camping?
Camping-specific mattresses and pads can work well when their insulation and portability fit the trip. An uninsulated household airbed is a poor choice for cold ground because it does not provide the same ground insulation.
