The best luggage set is the one whose pieces match how you actually travel—not simply the set with the most bags. Travel + Leisure’s 2026 testing guide names the two-piece Samsonite Freeform its Best Overall and the three-piece Travelpro Maxlite 5 its spacious pick. Those recommendations offer a useful starting point, but the available specifications do not support a complete, like-for-like ranking of eight sets here. Use the comparisons below to decide which configuration fits your trips and what to verify before buying.

Two luggage sets to compare first

Travel + Leisure says it tested over 840 pieces of luggage, including 23 luggage sets. Its guide describes packing each bag, assessing maneuverability on carpet, pavers, and curbs, conducting drop and baseball-bat tests, and continuing travel use for at least six months. The publication says it evaluates capacity, organization, design, maneuverability, durability, and value. These are the guide’s reported methods and recommendations, not a complete independent ranking of eight sets. Read Travel + Leisure’s 2026 luggage-set guide.

Set Pieces and dimensions Weight and capacity Features and trade-offs
Samsonite Freeform Hardside Set Two pieces: carry-on, 23 x 15 x 10 in; large checked bag, 31.1 x 20.9 x 13.8 in. Carry-on: 6.5 lb; checked bag: 9.6 lb. Capacity: not stated in the cited guide details. Polypropylene hard shells; both expand (1 in for the carry-on and 1.5 in for the checked bag). Interior straps, zippered compartments, and 360-degree wheels. The checked-bag handle has one height option.
Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Expandable Luggage 3-piece Set Three pieces: carry-on, 23 x 14.5 x 9 in; medium checked bag, 27 x 18.5 x 11.5 in; large checked bag, 31 x 21 x 13 in. Carry-on: 5.4 lb and 46 L; medium: 6.8 lb and 91 L; large: 8 lb and 142 L. Polyester softside bags, each expandable by 2 in. Exterior pockets; bags nest inside one another for storage; fabric is described as water- and stain-resistant. Travel + Leisure advises watching airline weight limits when packing.

Samsonite Freeform: a two-piece hard-shell option

Travel + Leisure names the Samsonite Freeform its Best Overall. The carry-on and large checked bag cover two common roles without adding a third piece that may go unused. The polypropylene shells provide a rigid exterior, while the interior straps and zippered compartments help keep packed items organized. The cited guide reports that the set rolls on 360-degree wheels and is easy to maneuver. Its specific drawback is the checked bag’s single handle-height option.

See the Samsonite Freeform recommendation in Travel + Leisure’s guide. Confirm the exact set configuration and current price and availability with the retailer before ordering.

Travelpro Maxlite 5: a lighter, expandable three-piece option

Travel + Leisure selects the Travelpro Maxlite 5 as its spacious choice. The set gives travelers one carry-on and two checked sizes, and its listed weights are lower than the corresponding Samsonite pieces where sizes are broadly comparable; the dimensions and capacities differ, so those figures are not a controlled comparison. Exterior pockets offer access without opening the main compartment, and the pieces nest for storage. The main trade-off is managing the weight of a full, expanded bag against the limits for your flight.

See the Travelpro Maxlite 5 recommendation in Travel + Leisure’s guide. Verify the exact set contents, retailer terms, and current price and availability before buying.

Choose the number of pieces around your travel habits

Start with the trips you take, rather than the piece count in a product name. A solo traveler or someone who packs light may have little use for more than a carry-on and one checked bag. Families, people who tend to pack more, and travelers on extended stays may benefit from a third or fourth size. A set can provide a coordinated look and may cost less than buying pieces separately, but neither benefit matters if several bags rarely leave the closet.

  • Mostly short trips: Prioritize a useful carry-on and a checked size you will actually use. A two-piece configuration may be enough.
  • Long stays or varied trip lengths: Consider multiple checked sizes if you regularly need the added capacity and can store them.
  • Shared family use: Check whether the pieces suit different travelers and whether everyone can handle their packed weight.
  • Limited storage: Look for nesting pieces, and measure the space where the set will be kept.

Compare construction, capacity, and handling—not appearance alone

Hard- and softside luggage solve different problems. A hard shell has a rigid exterior that can help protect fragile items from pressure. Softside bags can flex, often include exterior pockets, and may weigh less; the specific materials and features vary by model. Neither construction type guarantees protection or durability in every situation.

Dimensions and weights are more useful when considered with capacity and packed contents. Compare each piece’s exterior measurements—including wheels and handles—with the limits for the airlines and routes you use. Cabin rules vary by carrier and route, so do not assume that a bag labeled “carry-on” will fit every overhead bin or sizer. Also account for the weight of the empty bag: a lighter case leaves more of a weight allowance available for what you pack.

Expansion can add packing room, but expanded dimensions may exceed airline limits, and a fuller bag weighs more. Check how the set organizes belongings, how its wheels roll, whether the handles suit the people using it, and what durability and warranty information is available. Travelpro says its separate Crew Classic carry-on is sizer-bin tested for overhead space on most major U.S. airlines; that is the manufacturer’s claim for that separate product, not a guarantee for the Maxlite 5 set or every airline. Check these details before you buy

  1. Match the configuration to real trips. List the bag sizes you use most, and confirm that every included piece has a practical role.
  2. Check the airline rules for your itinerary. Compare the full exterior dimensions of the intended carry-on with each carrier’s current requirements; check checked-bag size and weight restrictions as well.
  3. Compare empty weight and capacity. Consider each bag’s listed weight alongside its capacity and the amount you usually pack.
  4. Inspect expansion and organization. Look at expanded dimensions, pockets, interior straps, and compartments, rather than assuming every piece shares the same features.
  5. Review handling and support. Check wheel design, handle adjustment, warranty coverage, return terms, and the retailer’s current product details.
  6. Compare the full value. Weigh the set price against the pieces you will use, the terms offered, and the cost of buying only the sizes you need.
