The best place to order meat online depends on what you want in the box—and what it will cost to get it to your door. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 comparison assigns different services to different uses, while NBC Select published its own tested comparison the same year. These are editorial category picks, not a single head-to-head ranking for every shopper. Before ordering, compare the full basket, shipping, delivery coverage and whether checkout starts a recurring subscription.
Compare the seven services by what you need
| Service | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ButcherBox | Overall starting point | Subscription-based boxes, individually packaged cuts and frozen delivery; coverage is described as the contiguous United States. Check the current offer and terms. |
| Porter Road | Fresh-shipped meat | Most meat is described as arriving fresh. Buy à la carte or by subscription; its range is smaller and it does not offer seafood. |
| Snake River Farms | Premium steaks and American Wagyu | A steak-focused catalog includes American Wagyu ribeye, filet mignon and New York strip. Prices and stock change. |
| Rastelli’s | Butcher-style bundles | Offers curated bundles and build-your-own ordering; Good Housekeeping notes that the selection is more limited than it has been in the past. |
| Crowd Cow | Variety and farm browsing | Offers meat, seafood and specialty categories, with browsing by named farms. Good Housekeeping reports exclusions for Alaska and Hawaii and fees below the free-shipping threshold in effect during its review. |
| Omaha Steaks | Gifts and meal bundles | Broad à-la-carte catalog and subscription options; meal bundles can include sides and desserts. Confirm current shipping thresholds and prices. |
| Mr. Steak | Beef only | Good Housekeeping describes USDA Prime beef, Wagyu, burgers and bratwurst, available à la carte or through a customizable subscription. No chicken, pork or seafood. |
The category labels and service details above reflect Good Housekeeping’s 2026 review; NBC Select’s July 28, 2026 comparison provides additional testing and subscription context for some services. The reviewers’ testing and impressions belong to those publications, not this article’s author. For product range and company descriptions, consult the providers’ own pages: Porter Road, Crowd Cow and Snake River Farms. Prices, stock, delivery terms and coverage can change.
How to choose without overspending
Compare the cost of the order you will actually place
Do not judge a service by one steak’s listed price. Build the same kind of basket you plan to buy and compare its total at checkout, including the products, shipping charge, minimum order and any introductory promotion. Promotions can make an initial box look cheaper than the recurring cost, so separate a one-time discount from the price you would pay later.
Check delivery to your address and how the meat arrives
Enter your ZIP code before deciding. Service areas, shipping charges and delivery timing vary; Good Housekeeping’s review, for example, describes ButcherBox as serving the contiguous United States and excludes Alaska and Hawaii for Crowd Cow. Also check whether the service ships meat fresh or frozen. Frozen, individually portioned products may be easier to store for later meals, while fresh-shipped meat suits shoppers planning to cook soon.

Make the subscription terms visible in your budget
A recurring box is a different purchase from a one-time order. ButcherBox is subscription-based, while Porter Road, Snake River Farms, Rastelli’s, Crowd Cow, Omaha Steaks and Mr. Steak have ordering options that vary by service; do not assume that every box or plan is optional or recurring in the same way. Before paying, check the selected frequency, next charge date, skip and cancellation rules, and whether the cart is a subscription or an à-la-carte purchase.
Match the catalog to the meals you cook
Decide whether you want mostly steaks, everyday beef, poultry, pork, seafood or a mix. Snake River Farms is the more focused steak choice, and Mr. Steak’s offer is beef only. Crowd Cow emphasizes a wider assortment including seafood, while Porter Road’s smaller range does not include it. A broad catalog is useful only if it contains the proteins and cuts you will actually use.

Read sourcing language as a company claim
Look for specific farm, origin and production information when sourcing matters to you. A seller’s description is a vendor claim, not independent verification; treat certifications as verified only when a relevant cited certification source supports them. Porter Road’s homepage states, “If it’s not raised right it can’t be delicious.” That is the company’s own positioning, not an independent standard.

Start with ButcherBox for a recurring mixed-meat box
Good Housekeeping names ButcherBox its overall pick and highlights its choice of cuts and individually packaged products. It is a useful starting point if a subscription box and frozen delivery work for your routine. Confirm the current box price, offer, shipping and delivery eligibility before treating it as a fit for your household budget.
Rank #3
Choose Porter Road if fresh delivery matters more than breadth
Good Housekeeping names Porter Road its fresh-meat pick. The company says it hand-cuts meat in Kentucky and ships it in insulated packaging; its site provides current timing and shipping details. Choose it if fresh-shipped meat and the option to order à la carte suit your plans, rather than if you need seafood or a particularly broad range.
Look at Snake River Farms for a steak-centered splurge
Good Housekeeping’s premium-steak pick, Snake River Farms, is aimed at shoppers seeking cuts such as American Wagyu ribeye, filet mignon or New York strip. Its catalog shows current products, but inventory and prices are live details. It is not the natural choice if your main goal is a varied weekly mix of proteins.
Rank #4
Consider Rastelli’s for a butcher-style bundle
Rastelli’s offers curated bundles as well as build-your-own ordering, which can suit shoppers who want a preassembled selection with some choice. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 review notes that its selection is more limited than it has been in the past, so inspect the current catalog before planning meals around it.
Browse Crowd Cow for variety and farm-level discovery
Crowd Cow’s current site lists meat, seafood and specialty categories and names farms, supporting a browsing-first approach. Good Housekeeping highlights its range, gift boxes and flash-frozen delivery. Check shipping eligibility and any order threshold carefully: the review reported fees below the free-shipping threshold that applied at the time and no delivery to Alaska or Hawaii.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Use Omaha Steaks for gifts or packaged meals
Good Housekeeping names Omaha Steaks its gift pick, and NBC Select highlights meal bundles that can include sides and desserts. Bundling can be convenient when sending a ready-made selection, but compare the total price with the individual products and verify current shipping costs, thresholds and delivery dates before placing a time-sensitive gift order.
Pick Mr. Steak only if a beef-focused catalog is a plus
Mr. Steak’s range, as described by Good Housekeeping, includes USDA Prime beef, Wagyu, burgers and bratwurst, with à-la-carte and customizable subscription options. Its lack of chicken, pork and seafood makes that focus a drawback for households trying to stock several kinds of protein from one seller.
