The Rhodes Trust announced on November 15, 2025, that 32 Americans had been selected as U.S. Rhodes Scholars for 2026. They are scholars-elect, not confirmed enrollees: selection remains subject to ratification by Rhodes Trustees after each accepts an offer from an Oxford college. The cohort is expected to begin postgraduate study at Oxford in October 2026. The Trust’s announcement and official roster document the selection; the available sources do not establish whether all scholars-elect were later ratified or enrolled.

When were they announced, and what does “scholar-elect” mean?
The Trust announced the U.S. selections on November 15, 2025, following the 2025 selection round. “Scholar-elect” is the status used on the official list: the announcement records selection, while ratification by Rhodes Trustees is still required after acceptance by an Oxford college. The expected start date for postgraduate study is October 2026; selection alone does not establish that a scholar-elect subsequently enrolled.

What the 2026 cohort represents
The 32 Americans were selected from applicants assessed through 16 independent U.S. committees. In its 2025 announcement, the Rhodes Trust said those committees interviewed 238 finalists. Nearly 2,800 students began the application process, and 965 candidates received formal endorsement from their colleges or universities. The endorsed candidates represented more than 264 institutions. These are Trust-reported figures for that round, and “nearly” and “more than” reflect the Trust’s wording.
The U.S. group represents 22 colleges and universities. The Trust singled out Colby College, Rutgers University, and George Washington University as institutions that had not had a U.S. Rhodes Scholar in more than 25 years. The Trust said the Americans would join scholars from 25 other Rhodes jurisdictions and two Global Rhodes Scholars, forming an international cohort of just over 100.

Profiles illustrate a range of academic and civic interests rather than a single route to the award. The Trust describes Yael Goldstein’s philosophy work as addressing housing rights; Alice Hall’s profile combines chemical engineering and Spanish study with student-body leadership and sustainable shea-processing work. Sydney Barta is described as a Paralympic athlete and bioengineer, Daniel Juzych as having worked on ophthalmic surgical training and cornea access in Ukraine, and Anirvin Puttur as having studied aeronautical engineering and applied mathematics while serving as an instructor pilot. These examples are drawn from the Trust’s biographies, not a claim that every scholar shares the same experience.
What does a Rhodes Scholarship cover?
The Rhodes Trust says the award provides full financial support for two to three years of study at Oxford, with a possible fourth year depending on the degree program. Listed support includes Oxford University fees, a living stipend, travel to and from Oxford, and research, conference, or additional academic support where applicable.

For the 2025 announcement, the Trust estimated the scholarship’s value at approximately $75,000 per year and up to $250,000 in total, depending on program length and field of study. Those are Trust estimates, not a guaranteed payment or identical package for every recipient. The Trust also reported that 3,706 Americans had received Rhodes Scholarships since the first U.S. class in 1904, including 689 American women since women became eligible in 1976.
How U.S. applicants are assigned to a selection district
According to the Trust’s 2025 announcement, U.S. applicants may apply through the state of their legal residence or the state where they have studied for at least two years. Each district committee selects two scholars. The announcement describes a process that combines formal institutional endorsement with interviews by district committees.

What the Trust says it looks for
Dr. Ramona L. Doyle, American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust, said: “Academic excellence is essential, but it is only the beginning. A Rhodes Scholar should demonstrate ambition for social impact, strong leadership, empathy for others, and an acute awareness of inequities. The Trust seeks Scholars of exceptional character who are committed to making a profound difference in the world. A Rhodes Scholar should show great promise of leadership and character, as well as an exceptionally strong commitment to service.”
