According to a July 31, 2024 ZedDash list, Annie Leibovitz has the highest estimated wealth among the 10 photographers named, at $440 million. That figure—and every amount in the list—is an unverified publisher estimate, not an audited net-worth calculation or a definitive all-time ranking.
What the ranking actually measures
The list presents estimates of personal wealth, but ZedDash does not disclose a calculation method, financial documents, or a ranking methodology. The figures therefore cannot be checked as audited assets, current income, lifetime earnings, or money personally retained from photography. They are best read as reported estimates published on July 31, 2024.
A separate number often appears in coverage of wealthy photographers: an auction price for a photograph. That is a transaction result for one artwork. It does not show the creator’s net worth, total income, ownership share, taxes, fees, or the proceeds ultimately received by the photographer.

The ordering above reproduces the source article’s figures and placement. Because several entries are ranges and the source does not explain its calculations, the table should not be treated as a verified league table. In particular, the $440 million figure for Leibovitz is a claim made by that list, not an independently established measurement.

What auction records can—and cannot—prove
Andreas Gursky’s Rhein II
Christie’s reported that Rhein II (1999) sold in New York in November 2011 for $4,338,500. This is the documented price paid for that specific work at auction. It is not evidence that Gursky personally had $4,338,500 in wealth or received that amount after commissions, taxes, ownership arrangements, and other costs.
Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #96
Christie’s reported a 2011 New York sale of Sherman’s Untitled #96 for US$3,890,500. As with any auction result, the figure describes the transaction’s price for one photograph, not Sherman’s personal fortune or her net proceeds.
Rank #2
The historical context
In a financial-results release published in 2012, Christie’s stated: “The record price for a photograph was broken twice in 2011, first with Cindy Sherman’s Untitled, 1981, in May, and then by Andreas Gursky’s Rhein II, 1999, which sold for $4.3 million in November.” The statement confirms the exceptional auction prices; it does not validate any net-worth estimate.
How to evaluate a claim that a photographer is “the richest”
- Identify the metric. Is the number an estimate of personal assets, annual income, a gallery valuation, or an auction price?
- Check the publisher and date. Wealth estimates can change, while an auction result is tied to a specific sale and currency.
- Look for a disclosed method. A credible personal-wealth figure should explain its sources, assumptions, liabilities, ownership stakes, and valuation date.
- Separate gross and net amounts. Auction headlines generally report the sale price, not the creator’s after-cost proceeds.
- Do not convert one sale into a fortune. A record-setting artwork can demonstrate market demand without revealing a person’s complete finances.
Bottom line on the 10-name list
If the question means “Who does the cited 2024 article place first?”, the answer is Annie Leibovitz, with a reported estimate of $440 million. If it means “Who is verifiably the richest photographer of all time?”, the available evidence here does not establish that answer. The list lacks a transparent method, and the documented Christie’s sales for Gursky and Sherman are artwork prices rather than personal-wealth measurements.
