As of October 1, 2026, Tesla documents a $500 prior-owner loyalty benefit and a separate $500 American Heroes discount. Local utility and municipal rebates may be worth more, but availability depends on your address and remaining funds.
The federal clean-vehicle credit described by Tesla and the IRS applied to vehicles placed in service on or before September 30, 2025, subject to statutory requirements. Do not include it in a 2026 Model 3 budget without confirming a newer IRS rule.
Model 3 incentives Tesla currently lists
The following programs are the most relevant incentives Tesla identifies for U.S. buyers. Amounts and funding can change, so verify the sponsoring program before placing an order.

How the two Tesla $500 discounts work
Prior-owner loyalty benefit
Tesla’s Model 3 inventory-order information lists a $500 benefit for existing or previous owners. Eligibility is associated with the Tesla Account used for the order. Because the benefit is not transferable, confirm that the correct account is signed in before completing the purchase.

American Heroes discount
The American Heroes program covers verified military members, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers and students. Tesla requires verification through ID.me. After verification, follow the redirect to Tesla’s order page; otherwise the discount may not attach to the transaction. Tesla says the $500 is removed from the pre-tax purchase price and can be combined with current Tesla finance offers and Refer & Earn. The published terms do not establish that it can also be combined with the prior-owner loyalty benefit, so ask Tesla to confirm before assuming both apply.
Why the federal tax credit should not be part of a new 2026 Model 3 budget
Tesla’s incentives information says the Inflation Reduction Act provisions ended September 30, 2025. The IRS describes the new clean-vehicle credit as applying to vehicles placed in service on or before that date, provided the statutory requirements were met. A Model 3 delivered and placed in service after the cutoff therefore should not be treated as federally subsidized based on those rules.

Timing is based on when the vehicle is placed in service, not simply when you configure it or submit an order. If your purchase was completed near the cutoff, retain the purchase documents and check the latest IRS instructions rather than relying on a salesperson’s estimate.
Credit transfer for an eligible historical purchase
The IRS transfer guidance allowed an eligible buyer to transfer the allowable credit to a registered dealer in exchange for an equivalent benefit, such as a lower amount due or down payment. The buyer should obtain the seller report containing the vehicle identification number and confirm that the dealer successfully submitted it. This mechanism does not revive the credit for a vehicle that falls outside the applicable placed-in-service window.

Local rebates can change the effective price more than Tesla’s discount
Local programs are where a Model 3 buyer may find the largest currently listed savings, but they are also the least portable. Service territory, household or vehicle eligibility, order date, delivery date, registration and remaining program funds can all matter.
San José Clean Energy
Tesla lists a San José Clean Energy incentive beginning September 15, 2026: $3,000 for an eligible new-vehicle purchase and $1,750 for an eligible used-vehicle purchase. Confirm that your address is in the utility’s territory, that a Model 3 meets the program’s vehicle rules and whether the money is applied at purchase or paid after documentation.

California first-time-buyer allocation
The $3,500 California incentive shown by Tesla is not a forward-looking discount. Tesla reports that its allocation was depleted. The published eligibility conditions included an August 3–7, 2026 order window, delivery while funds remained and California registration. A buyer ordering now should not count on this amount unless the administering program announces new funding.
Utility rebates for home charging
Some utilities rebate installation of a Tesla Wall Connector or other qualifying home-charging equipment. Tesla gives Entergy Arkansas as an example with a rebate of up to $250 and Lansing Board of Water & Light with up to $1,000. “Up to” is not a guaranteed payment: the utility may impose equipment, electrician, permit, enrollment or income requirements, and funds may be exhausted.

Compare cash, lease and finance by total cost
Tesla’s configurator offers cash, lease and finance routes, and its displayed prices exclude tax. The lowest advertised monthly payment is not necessarily the least expensive option.

Also check delivery timing. Inventory eligibility can differ from a factory order, and a rebate may require delivery or registration by a particular date.
A practical order-day checklist
- Sign in to the correct Tesla Account. Prior-owner eligibility is attached to that account and cannot be moved later.
- Complete ID.me verification first if using American Heroes, then place the order through the redirected Tesla page.
- Ask for the incentive terms in writing. Confirm whether each amount is a pre-tax reduction, point-of-sale credit or post-purchase reimbursement.
- Check your address and vehicle eligibility with the local program. Do this before assuming the San José or another utility incentive is available.
- Confirm funding and deadlines. A program can appear on Tesla’s list after its allocation has been reserved or exhausted.
- Compare the transaction routes. Record the cash total, financed total and lease cost using the same vehicle, taxes and fees.
- Save documentation. Keep the order agreement, delivery date, registration, rebate approval and any seller report needed for tax or incentive records.
Plan charging before delivery
A home-charging plan can affect the real cost of ownership as much as a purchase discount. Determine whether your electrical panel and parking location support the intended charger, obtain any required permit and use a qualified electrician. Then check your utility’s current rebate rules for a Tesla Wall Connector or compatible equipment. Because Tesla’s examples are utility-specific, do not assume an Arkansas or Michigan rebate applies elsewhere.
Bottom line
For a U.S. Model 3 buyer in late 2026, the dependable Tesla-listed opportunities are targeted $500 discounts and whatever local rebate remains available in the buyer’s service area. The California $3,500 allocation is depleted, and the federal credit cutoff described by Tesla and the IRS is September 30, 2025. Verify every local program, compare cash, lease and finance on total cost, and treat charging rebates as separate applications rather than automatic purchase discounts.
