Tesla’s sales decline is serious but uneven. Global deliveries fell 9% in 2025 to 1.64 million vehicles, the company’s second consecutive annual decline. Europe was far weaker than the global average: Tesla registrations across 32 European countries dropped 49% year over year in April 2025, while January-April registrations fell about 39% even as the broader EU market was broadly stable. Tesla also lost the global battery-electric volume lead to BYD. However, deliveries rebounded to 480,126 in the second quarter of 2026, up 25% from a year earlier. The evidence points to a combination of factory disruption, pricing pressure, stronger competition and brand-related demand problems—not one single cause.
How large was Tesla’s global decline?
The clearest measure is annual vehicle deliveries. Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, 9% fewer than in 2024, according to Associated Press reporting in 2026. That was the second annual decline in a row, ending the assumption that Tesla’s volume would rise every year.
| Measure | Result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Global Tesla deliveries, 2025 | 1.64 million, down 9% year over year | A second consecutive annual decline |
| BYD vehicle sales, 2025 | 2.26 million, according to Associated Press reporting | BYD moved ahead of Tesla in the reported global battery-electric volume comparison |
| Tesla deliveries, Q2 2026 | 480,126, up 25% from Q2 2025 | A second straight quarterly year-over-year gain |
The annual figure is large enough to matter operationally and financially, but it is not a collapse in absolute volume. Tesla remains a major global electric-vehicle manufacturer. The more important change is that growth has stopped while competitors have expanded, reducing Tesla’s lead and weakening its pricing power.
Europe is the sharpest pain point
European registration data show a much steeper deterioration than Tesla’s worldwide result. Associated Press reporting of ACEA data found:

- Tesla registrations in 32 European countries fell 49% year over year in April 2025, to 7,261 vehicles.
- Registrations from January through April 2025 fell about 39%, to 61,320.
- The wider EU passenger-car market rose 1.3% in April, so Tesla’s decline was not simply the result of a collapsing regional auto market.
Registrations are not identical to Tesla’s global delivery measure: they reflect vehicles registered in a market, while deliveries are the company’s reported handovers worldwide. Even with that distinction, the contrast is revealing. Tesla’s European weakness was substantially worse than the region’s overall market performance, indicating lost share as well as general industry conditions.
Why did Tesla sales fall?
Model Y factory changeovers disrupted supply
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-Q attributes a significant part of the first-half pressure to factory changeovers for the refreshed Model Y. Reconfiguring production lines can temporarily reduce output, interrupt inventory flow and leave dealers or delivery centers with fewer vehicles to hand over.
The filing says Tesla had approximately 95,000 fewer combined cash deliveries of Model 3 and Model Y in the first half of 2025, with the New Model Y changeover a contributing factor. That makes the factory explanation real, not merely a management talking point. It does not, however, explain every market’s result: a temporary production transition can defer sales, while a sustained regional share loss points to demand and competition as well.

Lower prices and larger incentives reduced revenue
Tesla’s automotive revenue declined 15% in the second quarter of 2025 and 18% in the first half, according to the same filing. Tesla cited lower average selling prices and higher financing incentives alongside the delivery decline.

A vehicle can be delivered without producing the same revenue or margin as an earlier vehicle if the buyer receives a price cut, cheaper financing or another incentive. Tesla’s sales problem therefore had two dimensions in 2025: fewer vehicles and less revenue per vehicle.
Competition became more intense
Associated Press reporting identified stronger competition as another pressure. Tesla’s original lineup is concentrated in a small number of high-volume models, while established automakers and Chinese manufacturers have added electric models across more body styles and price points. BYD’s reported 2.26 million vehicle sales in 2025 illustrate the scale of the competitive reversal.

Competition can hurt Tesla even when total electric-vehicle demand grows. Buyers who would once have had few alternatives can now compare range, price, charging access, equipment and local service among many brands.
U.S. incentives changed
AP also cited expiring U.S. tax credits as a 2025 pressure. When a purchase incentive expires or becomes harder to qualify for, some buyers accelerate purchases before the deadline while others leave the market. That can create a temporary spike followed by weaker deliveries, making year-over-year comparisons especially sensitive to policy timing.
Brand backlash added a demand risk
AP reporting also linked part of the pressure to consumer backlash associated with Elon Musk’s political activity. The effect is difficult to isolate from pricing, product age and competition, and the available figures do not quantify how many lost sales came from brand sentiment. It is nevertheless a distinct risk: a company whose public identity is closely tied to its chief executive can see that executive’s reputation affect consideration of the product.

Is Tesla losing demand, or was it just changing factories?
Both explanations fit the evidence, but they describe different time horizons.
- Factory disruption explains part of the timing. The Model Y changeover and roughly 95,000 fewer Model 3/Y cash deliveries in the first half of 2025 show that production execution depressed near-term volume.
- Demand and share problems explain the breadth. Europe’s 39% January-April registration decline while the EU market was broadly stable indicates that Tesla was losing ground relative to other brands, not merely waiting for a factory to restart.
- Pricing pressure confirms that volume was not the only issue. Lower average selling prices and higher incentives reduced automotive revenue even as Tesla worked to support deliveries.
The most accurate description is a supply transition occurring at the same time as a competitive and brand challenge. Treating the entire decline as temporary factory downtime would understate the demand problem; treating it as a permanent collapse would ignore the later production recovery.

Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2 2026, 25% more than in Q2 2025 and the second consecutive quarterly year-over-year increase. That result suggests the Model Y transition no longer dominated reported volume and that Tesla could regain momentum after the 2025 trough.

It is evidence of improvement, not proof that the annual problem is solved. One strong quarter does not establish a full-year trend, restore lost European share or show that pricing power has returned. The latest figures covered here stop at Q2 2026; Q3 2026 results are not included, so the rebound should not be extrapolated into a 2026 annual forecast.
Tesla itself cautioned investors in its Q2 2026 delivery release: “Tesla vehicle deliveries and storage deployments represent only two measures of the Company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.” Deliveries need to be read alongside revenue, margins, incentives, inventory and cash flow.
How to judge whether the recovery is durable
Readers tracking Tesla’s next reports should separate four questions rather than rely on a single headline number:
- Volume: Are global deliveries growing year over year for several quarters, and is growth broad-based rather than concentrated in one market?
- Geography: Are European registrations recovering relative to the wider EU market, or is Tesla still losing regional share?
- Execution: Has Model Y production stabilized without another prolonged changeover, and are delivery delays or inventory buildups recurring?
- Economics and brand: Are average selling prices and incentives improving, while competition and Musk-related backlash become less damaging?
A durable recovery would require progress on all four. Rising deliveries accompanied by heavier discounts could improve volume while leaving profitability under pressure.

Bottom line
Tesla’s global sales decline is material: 2025 deliveries fell 9% to 1.64 million, Europe fell roughly 39% through April and Tesla ceded the reported global battery-electric volume lead to BYD. The Model Y factory changeover explains an important part of the first-half disruption, but stable European market conditions, intensified competition, lower prices, expiring U.S. incentives and brand backlash show that the problem was broader than production alone. The 25% year-over-year delivery gain in Q2 2026 is a meaningful recovery signal, not yet a verdict that Tesla’s lost momentum has been permanently reversed.
