In a September 28, 2023 CIO Leadership Live interview, Teradyne CIO Shannon Gath described a cautious, company-wide approach to generative AI: let teams experiment with safeguards, coordinate policy through a cross-functional group, share lessons, and keep people responsible for checking results. The account is historical; it does not establish Teradyne’s current tools, rules, deployments, or productivity results.

What Gath said Teradyne was doing with generative AI

Gath said interest in generative AI had emerged across Teradyne. Rather than leave each team to develop an isolated practice, employees had organically formed a cross-functional group that operated as a steering committee. Its roles were to set policies and share learning between teams.

Her stated posture was neither unrestricted use nor a blanket ban while the company waited for certainty. Teradyne would accept some experimentation, with precautions intended to capture productivity opportunities while managing risk. Human involvement and verification remained essential.

The business context behind the exploration

The interview described Teradyne as having two major businesses: automated testing for electronics, and industrial automation that included collaborative and automated mobile robots. Gath connected technology planning to those businesses. She said she had interviewed more than 100 company leaders about growth plans and the capabilities they would need, then used that understanding to align technology investment.

The conversation also mentioned four ERP platforms and a move toward a global cloud ERP platform. That is interview-era context only; it does not show whether the migration was completed or which systems Teradyne uses now.

Examples of GenAI use and possible use

Employee access through Bing Enterprise

Gath identified Bing Enterprise as an employee option and characterized it as “air gapped.” That wording is her description in the interview, not an independent security certification. Related 2023 CIO reporting described Teradyne’s GenAI use as incidental through Bing Enterprise and security products.

AI capabilities inside security products

She also referred to security products that included built-in AI capabilities. The sources do not identify a complete product list, deployment scope, configuration, or present-day status, so this should not be read as a current Teradyne software inventory.

Natural-language search for product service

Gath considered natural-language AI search for product-service organizations a relatively low-risk place to look for early value. A technician or service employee could ask for information in ordinary language instead of navigating a complex knowledge base. In her account, this was a promising use-case assessment—not a published demonstration that a particular system had been deployed or produced measurable gains.

How the governance model balanced productivity and risk

Governance question What Gath described What the account does not establish
Who owned policy? A cross-functional group acting as a steering committee set policies. A formal charter, reporting line, or current policy document.
How did teams learn? The group shared learnings between teams. A measured adoption rate or standardized training program.
How much experimentation was allowed? Some experimentation with precautions, rather than stopping all use. Specific approval gates, prohibited prompts, or enforcement metrics.
Who checked outputs? People remained involved in collaboration and verification. A documented human-review workflow for every use case.
How were vendors assessed? Security controls, product roadmaps, intended GenAI use, and customer-data protection were part of vendor questions. A published vendor scorecard or a named winning supplier.

Questions Teradyne was asking vendors

Gath said the company’s security-question list had grown as GenAI became part of supplier discussions. Her questions covered three practical areas:

  • Controls: What security protections surround the AI feature and the data sent to it?
  • Roadmap: How will the product and its AI capabilities change?
  • Data handling: How will the supplier use, retain, and protect customer data?

She described vendors as strategic partners and favored open dialogue. That framing matters because an AI feature can change a product’s data flows and threat model after a purchase; the buyer needs continuing answers, not only a one-time security questionnaire.

The risks Gath highlighted

Gath warned that generative AI could make phishing messages harder to recognize. Her point was an operational one: more convincing language can raise the burden on employees and security teams. She paired that concern with human collaboration and verification, rather than treating model output as self-validating.

In the interview, she also summarized the technology’s limits by saying, “Generative AI is not magic. But it really it’s just software at the end of the day.” The transcript appears to be auto-transcribed and contains errors, so the exact wording should be checked against the episode audio before this is used as a polished verbatim quotation.

What the interview does—and does not—tell us today

Established by the 2023 account

  • Teradyne had a cross-functional GenAI group setting policy and sharing lessons.
  • The intended operating balance was cautious experimentation, productivity potential, and risk controls.
  • Bing Enterprise and AI-enabled security products were cited as examples then in use or under consideration.
  • Natural-language product-service search was discussed as a possible low-risk early application.
  • Vendor security, roadmaps, GenAI use, and customer-data protection were active questions.

Not established by the sources

  • Teradyne’s current GenAI policy, approved tools, or deployment footprint.
  • Whether the mentioned services remain in use or have changed names and capabilities.
  • Any quantified adoption, productivity improvement, cost saving, or return on investment.
  • Completion or present status of the global cloud ERP project.

The episode introduction described Teradyne as a “$3.7 billion company” with “6,500 employees worldwide.” Those figures belong to the September 28, 2023 program introduction and are not verified current company statistics.

How to interpret Gath’s approach

Gath’s account is best understood as an organizational playbook from 2023, not a product comparison. Its distinctive choices were shared policy ownership, cross-team learning, limited experimentation instead of prohibition, explicit human verification, and vendor scrutiny focused on data and security. The interview supplies no basis for ranking competing AI products or claiming that Teradyne achieved a particular business outcome.
