Yes—the increase was real, but it was not a blanket $5 hike for every TELUS customer. TELUS confirmed to MobileSyrup on October 3, 2024, that some customers on select legacy, month-to-month wireless data plans saw prices rise by up to $5 per month on bills issued beginning in September 2024. TELUS did not publish the affected plan list, customer count, provinces involved, or a reason for the change.
This is a 2024 wireless-plan event, not a newly announced August 2026 increase. Separate TELUS rate changes in 2026 affected services such as Optik TV, Pik TV and some long-distance plans.
What TELUS confirmed
MobileSyrup reported TELUS’s confirmation that the company increased prices for some customers on select legacy month-to-month data plans. The maximum reported increase was $5 per month, and it began with bills issued in September 2024. “Up to $5” means individual increases could have been smaller.
TELUS did not explain the business reason for the increase or identify every affected plan. The confirmation is reported here: MobileSyrup’s October 3, 2024 report.

Who may—and may not—have been affected
“Legacy” generally means an older plan no longer sold in TELUS’s mainstream lineup. It does not automatically mean a price that can never change. “Month-to-month” usually describes an ongoing, cancellable service arrangement rather than a fixed-term price guarantee.
The public confirmation does not establish:
- the plan names, data allowances or number of affected customers;
- whether every province was included;
- whether device-financing customers were included;
- whether the amount varied by plan;
- whether Koodo customers received the same change; or
- whether TELUS changed a base plan, a data add-on, or both.
Do not assume that every older TELUS plan, every month-to-month customer or every customer who saw a higher bill received this particular increase.
How to tell what changed on your bill
A higher total does not by itself prove that the plan rate increased. TELUS support discussions distinguish a base-price change from a promotional credit or discount ending: TELUS community billing guidance.
- Compare the current and previous bill’s plan base price.
- Check whether a promotional discount or bill credit disappeared.
- Review data add-ons, roaming, long-distance and other recurring features.
- Check device-financing, Bring-It-Back or remaining device-balance charges.
- Separate one-time connection or SIM fees, prorated amounts and taxes from recurring service charges.
- Look for a plan change made during a renewal or customer-service interaction.
Save the old bill, the notice and a screenshot of the plan’s current terms before contacting TELUS. That record helps distinguish a rate change from an expired offer or an account error.

Does a month-to-month increase violate the rules?
The available information does not establish that TELUS’s 2024 increase was unlawful. The answer depends on the customer’s contract, the type of term involved and whether TELUS gave the required notice.
Month-to-month versus fixed term
A customer who remained on an older month-to-month arrangement generally has less price certainty than someone still inside a fixed-term commitment. A fixed-term contract normally gives stronger protection to key terms during the commitment period. A customer who renewed, changed plans or financed a device may therefore have different rights from someone who simply stayed on a legacy plan.
The CRTC Wireless Code explains contract extensions, changes to key terms and notice obligations: CRTC Wireless Code decision. In general, a provider changing a key term after a commitment period must explain what is changing, when it takes effect and the customer’s right to request an updated contract at no charge. Apply the rule to the actual agreement and notice; do not treat the “legacy” label as a legal conclusion.
What to ask TELUS
- When and how was notice sent?
- Was the change to the base rate or an expired credit?
- What contract version applied to the line?
- Can TELUS provide the original agreement and any updated agreement?
TELUS’s suggested alternatives
TELUS pointed customers toward current 5G Essential Unlimited and 5G+ Premium Unlimited plans, along with Bring-It-Back. Those options may provide different device-related savings, but TELUS’s recommendation does not prove that a current plan costs less than every affected legacy plan. Availability and pricing can vary by province, account and promotion.

Should you keep the legacy plan or switch?
Compare the complete monthly cost rather than the advertised data allowance:
New plan cost + device payment + add-ons + taxes − promotional credits
A legacy plan may still be better if it has:
- a lower total price for your actual usage;
- valuable hotspot, roaming, international-calling or voicemail terms;
- multi-line discounts or family-account compatibility;
- no device-financing obligation; or
- a discount that remains active.
Before changing, verify:
- your average data use and hotspot needs;
- coverage at home, work and regular travel locations;
- any device balance or Bring-It-Back obligation;
- whether the quoted price is permanent or promotional;
- when every credit expires;
- roaming, international-calling, speed and tethering rules; and
- whether changing one line alters account-level discounts.
Write down the old plan’s features and price before accepting a new offer. A plan with more data can still cost more overall or remove a grandfathered benefit.

- Review bill messages, emails, texts and account notices.
- Ask TELUS for the notice date, delivery method and effective date.
- Request the contract and any updated agreement.
- Ask TELUS to identify whether the charge is a base-price increase or an expired discount.
- Use TELUS’s complaint process and keep a record of dates, representatives and responses.
- If the dispute remains unresolved, consider the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS).
A complaint does not automatically guarantee a refund. Eligibility and any remedy depend on the facts, contract, notice and applicable rules.

Later regulatory changes are not automatically retroactive
The CRTC introduced later consumer-protection measures that provide context but do not, by themselves, decide whether a September 2024 increase complied with the rules in force then.
- CRTC Telecom Regulatory Policy 2026-43 says specified new protections took effect June 12, 2026, including restrictions on activation or modification fees that create barriers to switching.
- CRTC Policy 2026-67 addresses delivery of certain future notices, including expiring-promotion notices, through a customer’s selected communication method.
Those developments should not be applied automatically to a 2024 bill dispute.
Do not confuse this with TELUS’s separate 2026 increases
TELUS lists other 2026 changes, including $5 increases for certain Optik TV and Pik TV packages beginning July 1, 2026 (TELUS Optik TV updates) and $5 increases for certain long-distance plans beginning in April 2026 (TELUS home-phone updates). Those are different services and dates from the 2024 legacy wireless-data-plan increase.
The Bottom Line
TELUS did raise prices by up to $5 per month for some select legacy month-to-month wireless data plans starting with September 2024 bills. The public record does not identify every affected customer or explain the rationale, so check your bill, credits, contract and notice before deciding whether to stay, renegotiate, switch or complain.
