TechCrunch has scheduled Clay co-founder and CEO Kareem Amin to discuss how AI and automation are changing go-to-market work at Disrupt 2026. The session focuses on the emerging “GTM engineer” role: building repeatable systems for revenue work such as account research, lead qualification and outreach preparation, rather than simply completing each task by hand. The term is associated with Clay, so it is best understood as a developing category—not a settled, universal job definition.
What is a GTM engineer?
In TechCrunch’s description, go-to-market (GTM) work includes researching accounts, cleaning data, qualifying leads, preparing outreach and transferring information between systems. A GTM engineer uses data, AI and automation to turn more of those activities into repeatable workflows.
The practical distinction is between executing an established process one task at a time and designing systems that let a team execute differently. That does not mean every task should be automated or that one role has a fixed industry-wide scope. The work described here is a useful way to understand the session, not a universal job specification.
For founders and GTM leaders, the organizational question is whether to add people to carry out an existing process or build systems that change how the current team works. Which approach makes sense depends on the team’s workflows and requirements; the event announcement does not establish that automation is always the better choice.

Why is TechCrunch featuring the role at Disrupt?
TechCrunch frames AI as a force changing the traditional GTM stack and creating demand for AI-native revenue workflows. Its agenda describes the session as tracing how AI “collapsed the traditional go-to-market stack and created an entirely new discipline in its place.” That is event copy, not a direct quotation from Amin.
Clay says it coined the GTM engineer role in 2023. That claim comes from a company closely connected to the category, rather than an independent account establishing who first used the term. TechCrunch reports roughly 100 GTM-engineering job listings per month, as cited by Clay in 2026. That company-reported figure may indicate interest, but it does not establish the occupation’s size or long-term prospects across the labor market.

Clay’s connection to GTM engineering
TechCrunch reports that Clay began in Brooklyn in 2017 with a goal of making programming capabilities more accessible. Its original spreadsheet connected information and automated work without code; salespeople, growth teams and agencies used it for prospecting, helping steer the company toward GTM.
TechCrunch describes Clay’s current product as infrastructure for GTM teams to access data, run agentic workflows and launch campaigns. It describes Claygent as an OpenAI-powered agent for research and outreach in sales, marketing and recruiting. These are descriptions of Clay and its products, not a neutral standard for what every GTM engineer uses.

- Clay reported $100 million in annual recurring revenue after tripling in a year, in a figure TechCrunch linked to a February 2026 announcement.
- Clay announced a $115 million Series D at a $7.1 billion valuation in September 2026, according to TechCrunch.
- Clay announced a $1 million scholarship fund to train GTM engineers in September 2026, according to TechCrunch. The announcement does not establish course availability, eligibility or a purchasable training program.
When and where is Amin’s Disrupt session?

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- It describes a practical set of activities: account research, data cleanup, lead qualification, outreach preparation and moving information between systems.
- It presents a way to organize the work: designing automated revenue workflows rather than relying only on manual task execution.
- It does not settle the job definition: Clay is both the company Amin leads and a provider of tools for these workflows, and its role in naming the category should be kept in view.
- Its numbers have limits: Clay’s listings, revenue, financing, valuation and scholarship figures are company-reported; the event’s attendance and exhibitor figures are projections. None alone proves the category’s scale, durability or value.
