The figures measure different parts of the labor market, and neither proves that technology work is disappearing. They point instead to selective hiring, shifting skill requirements and continued demand outside traditional technology companies.
The numbers measure different things
The approximately 29,000 decline came from an analysis of Labor Department data on technology occupations—what people do for work. It was not a count of layoffs at technology companies. A cybersecurity analyst employed by a hospital, for example, is included in an occupation-based technology measure even though the hospital is not a technology-sector business.
CompTIA separately estimated employment at businesses classified within the technology industry. That measure fell by 8,428 jobs in March. A software-company salesperson may be counted in the technology industry without being in a technology occupation, while a technology professional at a bank may appear in the occupation measure but not the industry measure.
| Measure | March 2025 result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Technology occupations | About −29,000 | Employment in technology-related jobs across all industries |
| Technology industry | −8,428 | Employment at businesses classified within the technology sector |
| Total US nonfarm payrolls | +228,000 | Employment across the entire US economy |
| Technology-occupation unemployment rate | 3.1%, down 0.1 percentage point | Share of the technology-occupation labor force actively unemployed |
The occupation and industry estimates are summarized by Computerworld. A monthly employment decline also is not identical to a layoff count: it can reflect separations, people leaving the labor force, survey variation or classification and seasonal-adjustment effects.

Why the broader economy still added jobs
March payroll growth of 228,000 exceeded the roughly 135,000 economists had expected. The overall unemployment rate edged up from 4.1% to 4.2%, however, and January and February payroll gains were revised down by a combined 48,000—14,000 for January and 34,000 for February.
The federal government lost about 4,000 jobs amid reduction-in-force efforts and uncertainty around government contracts. The combination describes a resilient headline with signs of cooling underneath it, rather than a uniformly strong market for every occupation. The historical release archive is maintained by the Bureau of Labor Statistics; readers checking the archive should select the April 4, 2025 Employment Situation release for these figures.
Why postings can remain high while employment falls
CompTIA counted more than 213,000 new technology-job postings and nearly 478,000 active postings in March. Those are demand signals, not equivalent counts of hires. A listing can be duplicated, reposted, paused, canceled or left open while an employer searches.
Companies can therefore reduce broad or lower-priority headcount while recruiting for narrower capabilities. Openings may also represent replacement hiring rather than net new positions. A skills mismatch can produce layoffs and vacancies at the same time.

Roles employers were still seeking
- Software developers and engineers
- Technology support specialists
- Systems engineers and architects
- Cybersecurity engineers and analysts
- Artificial-intelligence and data specialists
About 21% of active technology postings involved AI or required AI skills. Approximately half did not require a four-year degree, although that does not mean no education, experience or demonstrated ability was required.
The jobs may be moving beyond traditional tech companies
The largest categories of new technology postings in March were professional, scientific and technical services (52,526), administrative and support services (26,099), and manufacturing (21,975). Technology work also appears in finance, healthcare, logistics, government contracting and other industries.
For a displaced technology worker, that changes the search strategy. A bank may need cloud engineering, a manufacturer may need industrial cybersecurity, and a healthcare organization may need data or systems expertise. The employer’s industry is not a reliable substitute for the work’s technical content.
What AI explains—and what it does not
The March data are consistent with companies hiring people to implement, integrate, secure, govern and operate AI systems. They also fit rising demand for data preparation and analysis. Heller Search CEO Martha Heller argued that organizations will need people who can turn AI investment into business returns; other recruiters described stronger demand for selected data and mathematical roles.

Those views support three different claims that should not be conflated:
- AI can create additional technical work in implementation, infrastructure, security and governance.
- AI can change the mix of jobs, favoring specialized skills over some generalist or legacy work.
- The March figures prove that AI directly caused a 29,000-job decline.
The first two are plausible interpretations of the posting mix. The third is not established by one monthly employment report. An AI-skilled posting may be a replacement role or a rewritten version of an existing job rather than a net-new position.
Other explanations analysts offered
CompTIA’s Tim Herbert described employers as taking a “wait-and-see” approach. Janco Associates CEO Victor Janulaitis linked delayed IT contracts and government uncertainty to weaker hiring. ManpowerGroup’s Ger Doyle saw a resilient market with signs of cooling and caution. These are attributed interpretations, not a single verified cause.
Janco estimated that IT employment fell 34,200 in the first quarter and that 133,000 IT professionals were unemployed in March, compared with 148,000 at the start of 2025. Its figures are a third-party estimate and should not be treated as the same series as the Labor Department occupation data.

Why the technology unemployment rate could fall
A lower unemployment rate alongside fewer employed technology workers is not mathematically impossible. The unemployment rate counts people without a job who are actively looking. It can decline if some people find work, stop searching, retire, move to another occupation or otherwise leave the labor force.
Janulaitis interpreted some of the change as lower-skilled or displaced IT professionals stopping their search for IT-sector jobs. That is his interpretation, not a direct conclusion from the published Labor Department count.
What job seekers should do with the data
- Search across industries. Include manufacturers, banks, healthcare systems, professional-services firms and government contractors, not only software and internet companies.
- Show applied capability. Projects demonstrating cloud architecture, data engineering, cybersecurity controls, software delivery or AI deployment are more informative than a broad claim that you “know AI.”
- Connect technical skills to a domain. Healthcare compliance, factory operations, financial risk or public-sector procurement can distinguish otherwise similar candidates.
- Read postings as leads, not promises. Active listings are not guaranteed openings or offers.
- Do not overread one month. Revisions and sampling noise make a longer trend more useful than a single occupation estimate.
What employers should take from it
Reducing technology headcount does not necessarily remove technology capability from a business. A company may have excess capacity in one area and a genuine shortage in cloud, security, data or systems design.
Hiring managers should identify whether an opening is growth, replacement or continuously posted, and should distinguish a real capability requirement from an ordinary role relabeled as “AI.” Skills-based hiring can widen the pool, but “no four-year degree required” should not conceal unrealistic experience demands.

How to read the evidence
Three distinctions prevent the most common mistakes:
- Occupation versus industry: what a worker does versus what the employer sells.
- Employment versus unemployment: people with jobs versus active job seekers without jobs.
- Postings versus hires: advertised demand versus completed recruitment.
The BLS releases also revise earlier months, and occupation-level estimates can move from month to month. That makes it unsafe to label March a structural collapse or a confirmed recovery without a longer series.
Bottom line
March 2025 did not show that technology work had vanished. It showed broad technology-occupation employment weakening while employers continued to seek specialized skills, often in industries outside traditional tech. Economic and policy uncertainty may have delayed hiring, and AI may be reshaping requirements, but the available figures do not isolate AI as the cause of the 29,000 decline.
