For a buyer, the value depended on needing multiple qualifying accessories. A free item is not equivalent to a cash discount if the required purchases are unnecessary or the free item is not the one the customer would have chosen. Those distinctions matter financially. Buying without a new two-year agreement, being free to use a phone on another carrier, and having no remaining device balance are separate conditions. The available report headline does not resolve which applied to T-Mobile’s offer, so buyers should not infer them from “off-contract” alone.
A lower down payment is not necessarily a lower phone price
A down payment is the amount due at the start of a purchase or financing arrangement. Reducing it can lower the checkout cost without lowering the phone’s total price. To determine whether a phone deal actually saves money, a buyer needs the full device price, any remaining installment balance, service requirements, and any fees or taxes due upfront.
