Yes—the headline was based on a real T-Mobile launch promotion. At launch, T-Mobile advertised the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra “on us” for customers who added a qualifying line, with no trade-in required. “Free” meant 24 monthly bill credits applied to a financed phone, not a phone with no taxes, fees, service obligation or credit requirements. Preorders began February 25, 2026, general availability began March 11, and that preorder window is now closed. T-Mobile’s currently indexed offer presents different terms, advertising the Ultra for under $200, so check the live checkout page rather than relying on the launch headline.
What T-Mobile’s original offer actually promised
T-Mobile’s February 25, 2026 announcement said customers could get the Galaxy S26 Ultra “on us” when they added a line, without trading in an old phone. The phone was still purchased through T-Mobile’s equipment-installment program. T-Mobile then applied a promotional credit each month for 24 months, potentially reducing the eligible device balance to zero.
That was a carrier-service subsidy, not a free unlocked handset from Samsung. You had to qualify for T-Mobile service and financing, and you had to keep meeting the promotion’s conditions for all 24 credits.

What “no trade-in required” meant
New customers
A new customer generally needed to open or activate qualifying T-Mobile service, add a qualifying voice line and finance the phone. The no-trade-in route was tied to that new-line requirement.

Existing T-Mobile customers
T-Mobile said new and existing customers could access Galaxy S26 promotions, but an existing customer could not assume that upgrading an existing line qualified for the no-trade-in version. The launch wording centered on adding a line. Separate upgrade and trade-in offers had different rules.
Trade-in promotions were separate
T-Mobile also promoted trade-in discounts, including advertising that referenced amounts as high as $1,300 in the broader Galaxy S26 lineup. That language should not be combined with the no-trade-in Ultra offer. A trade-in, plan tier and device condition can change the value.
The requirements behind the “free” phone
- Equipment financing: The Ultra was placed on a monthly installment agreement.
- Qualifying line: The launch no-trade-in route required adding a voice line; an existing-line upgrade was not automatically eligible.
- Eligible plan: The launch announcement highlighted Experience Beyond and a legacy Go5G Next path. Current pages list other plan and customer configurations, so eligibility is not timeless.
- Credit approval: T-Mobile’s qualifying-credit requirements apply.
- Upfront taxes: Sales tax is calculated on the phone’s full pre-credit price, not its eventual net cost.
- Connection charge: Store terms list a $35 device-connection charge where applicable.
- Account in good standing: The qualifying line and account generally must remain active and in good standing.
- Time for credits: T-Mobile’s terms say credits can take up to two billing cycles to appear.
Promotion details can vary by plan, customer category, storage tier, location and offer code. Confirm the exact terms shown in your account or checkout flow.
How 24 monthly credits work
- T-Mobile places the phone on an equipment-installment agreement.
- You owe the financed device balance under that agreement, subject to any required down payment.
- T-Mobile applies a promotional credit to eligible monthly bills.
- After 24 qualifying months, those credits can offset the eligible device price.
This structure is why “free” does not mean “no financial obligation.” If you cancel the qualifying service, leave the account ineligible or otherwise break the offer terms, future credits can stop and the remaining device balance may become due. T-Mobile’s offer language also says promotional credits end if you pay off the device early.

What you could pay upfront
Even with a fully credited device, a customer may owe:
- Sales tax on the full pre-credit phone price.
- The $35 device-connection charge, where applicable.
- A credit-based down payment.
- The first or partial month of wireless service.
- Optional accessories, insurance or other services.
Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP file lists the 256GB unlocked Galaxy S26 Ultra at $1,299.99. That is a reference price, not a promise of T-Mobile’s installment amount, but it shows why the tax can be substantial even when credits later offset the device. See the Samsung MSRP document.
Illustrative credit calculation
Assume an eligible device price of $1,299.99 and 24 credits covering that amount. Dividing $1,299.99 by 24 gives approximately $54.17 per month. In this example, the customer still pays tax on $1,299.99, any applicable $35 connection charge and the wireless plan. The actual credit can differ by storage tier, installment agreement, credit qualification and promotion.
The preorder dates matter
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| T-Mobile and Samsung preorders opened | February 25, 2026 |
| Galaxy S26 series general availability | March 11, 2026 |
| Article update context | August 18, 2026 |
Because general availability began March 11, the original preorder promotion should be treated as a launch-period offer. Samsung independently reported the same timing in its Galaxy S26 launch announcement.

What T-Mobile is showing now
T-Mobile’s currently indexed Samsung phone-deals page advertises the Galaxy S26 Ultra for under $200 with activation of an eligible line. It still describes 24 monthly bill credits and requirements for qualifying service, taxes and fees, and the connection charge. That presentation is different from the launch “on us” headline.
Offer pages can change by date, market and customer segment. Store pages have displayed different discount amounts, including $1,100, $900 and $800, so there is no single universal current value to assume. Check the live offer at T-Mobile’s Samsung deals page and your checkout summary.
Who should consider the deal?
It may fit you if
- You already want T-Mobile service or genuinely need another line.
- You can keep the qualifying line active for the full 24-month credit period.
- The required plan does not cost materially more than your current service.
- You can pay the upfront tax and connection charge.
- You are comfortable with carrier financing instead of buying an unlocked phone outright.
It may be a poor fit if
- You want an unlocked phone immediately.
- You may switch carriers before 24 months.
- You would add a line only to obtain the handset.
- You want to pay off the phone early.
- You would give up a cheaper legacy plan by moving to a qualifying plan.
- You cannot absorb the remaining device balance if service ends.
The relevant comparison is the total two-year cost of the required service, taxes, fees and device payments versus buying the phone another way. T-Mobile does not publish one plan price that applies to every account; line count, taxes, AutoPay and current pricing affect the result.
Questions to ask before ordering
- Is this exact offer still available today, and is the Ultra fully covered or merely advertised as under $200?
- Which plan name and line count qualify?
- Does an existing customer need a new voice line?
- Is a port-in or recent-line reactivation requirement involved?
- How much tax and what connection charge are due today?
- What is the monthly installment before credits?
- What is the monthly credit, and when will the first one post?
- What happens if you change plans, upgrade, pay off the phone or cancel?
- What unlocking rules apply to this T-Mobile device?
Common problems and how to protect yourself
The first bill lacks the credit
Allow up to two billing cycles under T-Mobile’s stated terms. Save screenshots of the offer, plan name, installment agreement, order confirmation and any promotional ID before submitting the order.

You cancel the qualifying line
Cancellation can stop future credits and make the unpaid device balance due. Obtain written confirmation of the financial consequences before canceling.
You pay off the device
T-Mobile says credits end when the device is paid off early, so paying the balance does not necessarily preserve the remaining subsidy.
You change plans
A plan change can affect eligibility. Ask T-Mobile to confirm in writing that the new plan preserves the promotion.
You canceled a line recently
Current store terms warn that a line canceled within the previous 90 days may need to be reactivated before qualifying. Some current terms also limit discounted devices to four per account. See the Los Angeles store offer terms.

You buy through Samsung
Samsung’s direct checkout can have different trade-in values, financing and incentives. A carrier transaction routed through Samsung is not automatically identical to a direct T-Mobile purchase. Verify who is issuing the installment agreement and who supplies the credits. See Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra offers and T-Mobile-specific buying page.
What phone the promotion covered
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is Samsung’s top-tier model, with a 6.9-inch display, a 200-megapixel camera, an integrated Privacy Display and built-in S Pen support. Those features are described on Samsung’s product page; they do not change the financing conditions.
Verdict
T-Mobile’s “free Galaxy S26 Ultra with no trade-in” claim was legitimate at the February 2026 launch, but it described 24 months of bill credits tied to a qualifying new line and service—not a no-strings-attached $0 phone. The preorder period ended March 11. In August 2026, treat the original headline as historical and evaluate the live T-Mobile offer, total service cost and consequences of leaving before accepting it.
