Yes—T-Mobile’s $35 Device Connection Charge (DCC) is real. The carrier was reported to replace its narrower Assisted Support Charge with a fee that applied to online as well as in-store activations beginning November 15, 2022. T-Mobile’s current U.S. support documentation still describes a one-time DCC when customers activate or upgrade a device, so online ordering is not a guaranteed workaround.
The amount is generally $35 for postpaid transactions, but your plan, product, promotion and sales channel can change the final charge. A routine SIM or eSIM transfer on an existing line is a different transaction from a new-line activation or carrier upgrade.
What changed on November 15, 2022?
Before the change, T-Mobile’s Assisted Support Charge (ASC) was mainly associated with getting activation help in a store or through an assisted channel. A November 2, 2022 report said T-Mobile would replace it with a $35 Device Connection Charge beginning November 15, 2022.
The practical difference was significant: the reported DCC applied to activations completed both online and in stores. Ordering online therefore stopped being a dependable way to avoid the charge. The original report also described exceptions for certain SIM and eSIM swaps, defective or improperly damaged replacement devices, and customers enrolled in JUMP!, but those were 2022 exceptions—not guarantees of the current policy.

What T-Mobile calls the fee today
T-Mobile’s current bill-support documentation describes a one-time Device Connection Charge per line when a customer connects a new device by activating or upgrading with T-Mobile. Current T-Mobile plan material identifies the postpaid charge as $35, so treat $35 as the usual postpaid amount rather than a universal price for every T-Mobile product.
The carrier’s terms also reserve the right to impose activation, connection, upgrade and similar charges. Taxes, promotions, plan eligibility and the channel handling your order can affect what appears at checkout.

New-line activation
Adding a new postpaid voice line and connecting a device is the clearest case in which you should expect the DCC to appear.
Carrier upgrade
T-Mobile’s current wording explicitly includes upgrades, not just first-time activations. A phone purchased from a manufacturer or retailer can still generate the fee if the transaction is processed as a T-Mobile upgrade.

Apple transactions
T-Mobile specifically says upgrades completed through Apple—including Apple retail, online and app-based transactions—can produce a DCC. Buying outside a T-Mobile store does not automatically remove the charge.
Qualifying activation benefit
For a qualifying new-device activation on a voice line, T-Mobile says it generally adds a one-time 30-day pass with 20GB of high-speed domestic hotspot data. The pass is usually added within 24–48 hours and ends after 30 days or when the data is consumed. It is a service benefit, not a $35 cash rebate.

Is a SIM or eSIM transfer charged?
There is no responsible blanket yes-or-no answer because “activation” can describe different actions. T-Mobile’s SIM and eSIM support guidance covers moving service to a compatible device, while the DCC language concerns connecting a new device through an activation or upgrade transaction.

Ask support to identify the action precisely—“SIM transfer,” “device change,” “upgrade” or “new activation”—before authorizing it. A line that is already active does not by itself prove that the transaction is fee-free.

How to check before you pay
- Review the order summary. Look for “Device Connection Charge,” “activation,” “upgrade” or a similar line item before submitting payment.
- Confirm the transaction type. Ask whether you are transferring service to an existing line or placing a new-line or upgrade order.
- Check the channel. Store, T-Mobile customer service, Apple and other retailer flows can process the same device differently, but none should be assumed fee-free.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the itemized checkout page, promotion terms and any chat transcript.
- Compare the first bill. If the amount or description differs, contact T-Mobile with the order number and request an explanation.
Ways to reduce or avoid the charge
Use an unlocked phone with your existing line
Buying a compatible unlocked phone outright and transferring the existing SIM or eSIM may avoid initiating a carrier upgrade transaction. Confirm compatibility and the exact process first. This route can also mean giving up T-Mobile trade-in credits, promotional financing or other upgrade incentives.
Compare T-Mobile Connect
T-Mobile Connect’s bring-your-own-phone page lists a $10 one-time device connection charge per line in the cited materials, rather than the generally $35 postpaid amount. Connect is prepaid, however, with different plan benefits, eligibility rules, network prioritization and promotion structures; it is not a drop-in replacement for every postpaid account.
Look for a documented waiver
A promotion or plan-specific offer may waive the DCC. Treat a waiver as limited to the displayed offer and its terms, not as a permanent T-Mobile rule. Verify that the waiver appears in writing before checkout.

Common problems and how to handle them
- Unexpected fee at checkout: Save the confirmation and compare its description with the first bill.
- Two connection charges: Ask whether one came from the original activation and another from a replacement or upgrade. Provide documentation for a defective-device replacement.
- Apple purchase assumed to be exempt: T-Mobile’s current support language specifically includes Apple upgrade channels.
- Postpaid and prepaid amounts confused: The $10 Connect figure should not be substituted for the generally $35 postpaid DCC.
- JUMP! or other historical exception cited: The 2022 report mentioned JUMP!, SIM swaps and some replacements, but confirm current plan documentation before relying on any of them.
- Home Internet order: T-Mobile onboarding material says a one-time $35 DCC may apply to Home Internet and directs representatives to verify whether it is waived. That separate product rule should not be generalized to phone activations.
