Those figures describe the 2025 announcement—not necessarily every account today. As of August 2026, Metro’s public page markets the $60 plan as including unlimited premium 5G data, while the $50 plan still warns that speeds may slow after 35GB during congestion.
What T-Mobile announced in June 2025
T-Mobile described the change as more premium data on Metro’s two popular AutoPay plans, with no additional charge announced for the upgrade. The plans were already unlimited; the change increased the amount of usage receiving higher network priority before congestion-related slowdowns could affect a customer.
| Metro plan | Before announcement | Announced allowance | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50 with AutoPay | 35GB premium data | 50GB | 15GB |
| $60 with AutoPay | 35GB premium data | 70GB | 35GB |

What “premium data” actually means
Premium data is a network-priority allowance. While you are within that allowance, your traffic generally receives higher priority than traffic on plans subject to deprioritization. After the allowance, service normally continues, but speeds can be lower than those of higher-priority users when the local network is busy.
#1 Best Overall
- STAY CONNECTED WORLDWIDE: Unlimited calling from the U.S. to 90+ international destinations including India, Mexico, Canada, China, the U.K. and more.
- RELIABLE NATIONWIDE COVERAGE: Enjoy 4GB of high-speed 5G/4G LTE data on the T-Mobile 5G Network.
- TRAVEL ACROSS NORTH AMERICA: Unlimited talk and text in Mexico and Canada plus international roaming credit.
- BRING YOUR OWN PHONE: Activate your compatible unlocked phone with the included 3-in-1 SIM card or eSIM. Keep your number or get a new one.
- NO CONTRACTS: 1-Month prepaid wireless plan with no annual contracts, no credit checks, and no hidden fees.
- It is not a monthly data shutoff.
- It is not a guaranteed speed in megabits per second.
- It does not expand coverage or make an incompatible phone support 5G.
- Its practical effect depends on the tower, location, time, signal conditions and congestion.
Metro’s current disclosure also says Metro customers may receive lower priority than T-Mobile postpaid customers and warns that users exceeding 35GB may notice slower speeds when the network is busy. See Metro’s current plan disclosures.
What applies to Metro plans now
The current public lineup has changed how the benefit is described. The table below reflects Metro’s listings observed in August 2026; a grandfathered account can have different terms.
| Plan | Price and billing | Smartphone data wording | Hotspot | Notable benefits | Congestion or pricing notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50 plan | $50 per month | Unlimited 5G data | 8GB | 100GB Google One, T-Mobile Tuesdays, Scam Shield, taxes and fees included, five-year price guarantee | Disclosure says usage above 35GB per month may be slower when the network is busy |
| $60 with AutoPay | $60 per month with AutoPay; $65 for the first month | Unlimited premium 5G data | 25GB | Amazon Prime, HD video, unlimited international texting to more than 210 countries and destinations, 100GB Google One, T-Mobile Tuesdays, Scam Shield, taxes and fees included, five-year price guarantee and upgrades included on phones | Advertised recurring price depends on AutoPay |
“Unlimited premium 5G data” is current marketing for the $60 plan, not a statement that every customer still has the historical 70GB threshold. Metro’s January 2026 rate-plan chart separately lists smartphone, tablet, hotspot and other connected-device offerings; those allowances should not be treated as smartphone premium data. The chart is available at Metro’s January 2026 rate-plan PDF.
Unlimited data versus unlimited premium data
Unlimited data
You can continue using smartphone data after a plan’s premium-priority threshold. Network-management rules can still reduce performance during congestion.

Premium data
The included usage receives comparatively higher priority. Once that allowance is exhausted, the phone remains connected but can be deprioritized when capacity is limited.
Unlimited premium data
Metro currently uses this label for the $60 plan to indicate that data usage itself is not intended to trigger a usage-based premium-data slowdown. It does not make hotspot data unlimited, remove coverage limits or guarantee a fixed speed. The $60 plan includes 25GB of high-speed hotspot data, a separate allowance.
Who would notice the difference?
- Heavy cellular users who regularly approach or exceed 35GB in a billing cycle.
- People streaming video, using cloud services or relying on a phone in busy urban areas, stadiums and transit hubs.
- Customers who need 25GB of hotspot data rather than 8GB.
The distinction is less important for Wi-Fi-heavy customers, light users and people whose problem is weak coverage rather than congestion. A priority upgrade cannot fix a poor indoor signal, limited tower backhaul or device limitations.
Is Metro’s $60 plan worth the extra $10?
Compare the recurring $60 AutoPay price with the $50 plan, while remembering that Metro lists the first month at $65. The $60 option adds 17GB of hotspot capacity, HD video, Amazon Prime and the current unlimited-premium-data label. Those benefits are valuable only if you use them; a customer using little mobile data and no Prime or hotspot may get little practical return.

Prices can vary by line count and offer configuration. Metro lists a $25 in-store device activation or change fee per line and $0 for online activation or change. Device cost, accessories and optional services can be separate.
What existing customers should check before changing plans
- Open your account and record the exact plan name, not just the monthly price.
- Confirm whether AutoPay is active and when any AutoPay price takes effect.
- Review the plan’s premium-data or congestion language and your monthly smartphone usage.
- Check hotspot data separately; smartphone priority and hotspot capacity are different features.
- Ask whether your account is legacy or grandfathered and whether a switch would remove a promotion, device discount or upgrade eligibility.
- Verify the current price, line configuration and any activation fee before accepting a change.
Metro says its five-year price guarantee applies to the price of talk, text and 5G smartphone data for at least five years on eligible plans. That language does not promise that every hotspot allowance, subscription, promotion or add-on remains unchanged. If your account shows 35GB while you expected the 70GB announced in 2025, contact Metro with the exact plan name and account terms rather than assuming the old announcement controls your current line.
Common misunderstandings
“My phone slowed down before I used 35GB.”
A threshold is not a speed guarantee. Weak signal, radio conditions and real-time congestion can slow service at any usage level.
“I upgraded, so my hotspot should be unlimited.”
It is not. The $60 plan’s 25GB hotspot allowance is separate from its smartphone premium-data treatment.

“Unlimited premium data should make my video HD.”
Priority and video-resolution policy are separate plan attributes. Metro specifically lists HD video on the $60 plan; network priority alone does not set streaming resolution.
“My bill is higher than the advertised price.”
Check the $65 first-month charge on the $60 plan, AutoPay enrollment, line count, in-store fees and whether the offer was online-only.

The 2025 news was real: Metro’s $50 and $60 AutoPay plans were announced at 50GB and 70GB of premium data, respectively. But Metro’s current public lineup uses different language and benefits. Treat the old figures as historical plan terms, and use your account disclosure and Metro’s current plan page to determine what applies now. For present-day shoppers, the central choice is whether unlimited-premium smartphone data, 25GB of hotspot, HD video and included subscriptions justify the $10 monthly difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Metro still offer exactly 70GB of premium data?
The 70GB figure belongs to T-Mobile’s June 2025 announcement for the $60 AutoPay plan. Metro’s current public page instead markets that plan as including unlimited premium 5G data, so check your account’s current disclosure.

Do I need AutoPay for the advertised $50 or $60 terms?
The 2025 increases were announced for AutoPay versions of the plans, and Metro currently lists the $60 price as $60 with AutoPay, with $65 charged for the first month. Confirm the requirement on your account before switching.
Can switching plans cancel my phone promotion?
It can affect promotions, device discounts or upgrade eligibility. Review your account terms and ask Metro before changing a legacy or grandfathered plan.
Does the five-year price guarantee cover every benefit?
No. Metro describes it as applying to the price of talk, text and 5G smartphone data on eligible plans. It does not necessarily lock hotspot limits, subscriptions, promotions or add-ons.
