Summit says three Bridgefield insurance carriers have regulatory approval to begin offering workers’ compensation coverage in Maryland and Washington, D.C. Independent agents can submit quote requests for policies in both jurisdictions, according to the company’s September 17, 2026 announcement.
What Summit’s expansion means
The approvals extend the jurisdictions where Summit’s managed carriers can offer workers’ compensation insurance. The carriers named in Summit’s announcement are Bridgefield Casualty Insurance Company, Bridgefield Employers Insurance Company, and Bridgefield Indemnity Insurance Company. Summit is a member of Great American Insurance Group. Summit’s announcement describes a market-availability update, not a change to workers’ compensation law or the launch of a direct-to-consumer sales channel.
Approval to begin offering coverage does not establish that every employer is eligible or that a policy is already available for a particular business. The announcement does not provide underwriting criteria, covered business classes, state filing numbers, exact approval dates, or policy effective dates.
How agents and employers can pursue a quote
Independent agents can submit quote requests for Maryland and Washington, D.C. Local property-and-casualty agents interested in working with Summit can also inquire about becoming Summit-appointed agents. Employers seeking coverage should contact an independent agent to discuss their business and request a quote; Summit’s announcement does not describe a direct purchase route.
#1 Best Overall
The announcement does not specify appointment requirements, quote turnaround times, or how eligibility and pricing vary by employer. Those details should be confirmed with Summit or an appointed agent before relying on coverage being available for a particular operation.
What Summit says its workers’ comp approach includes
Summit describes its approach as including claims management, loss-prevention expertise, and responsive service. These are the company’s descriptions of its offering, not independently verified measures of claims results or service quality.

Summit president and CEO James Wood said the company focuses on preventing workplace accidents and improving outcomes for injured employees and their employers. Summit vice president of the Mid-Atlantic region Greg Thomas described independent agents as central to its business model. Both statements reflect Summit’s own positioning and should not be read as evidence of independently measured outcomes.

Summit’s announcement says each of the three Bridgefield carriers is rated “A+” (Superior) by AM Best Company. Because ratings can change, employers and agents who consider financial-strength ratings material should verify each carrier’s current status with AM Best.

What the announcement does not establish
- It does not state when policies will take effect or identify filing numbers or exact regulatory approval dates.
- It does not spell out underwriting appetite, eligible industries, coverage terms, or premiums.
- It does not provide injury-rate, market-size, policyholder, premium, or claims-performance statistics.
- It does not compare Summit with other insurers, so it is not enough to determine which carrier is best for a particular employer.
