The U.S. trading week of October 5–9 brings September services data, the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes, weekly jobless claims and a preliminary consumer-sentiment reading. Those events may shape how investors assess the economy and interest rates, but the available calendar and historical data do not establish whether stocks will rise or fall that week. The “season of strength” idea needs context: October has been positive on average in one historical dataset, while its presidential-election-year averages were negative.

What could move markets during October 5–9?

The week’s scheduled releases cover several different parts of the economic picture. Services surveys are timely indicators of business activity; claims offer a limited, weekly labor-market signal; the Fed minutes provide a record of policymakers’ discussion; and consumer sentiment captures households’ views. None alone determines the direction of share prices.

Date Scheduled event What it measures or may clarify
Monday, October 5 S&P Global U.S. Services PMI, 9:45 a.m. Eastern; ISM Services PMI, 10:00 a.m. Eastern Two reads on September services-sector activity. [Kiplinger calendar]
Tuesday, October 6 U.S. trade balance for August, 8:30 a.m. Eastern The balance of U.S. imports and exports. [Kiplinger calendar]
Wednesday, October 7 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes, 2:00 p.m. Eastern Policymakers’ discussion can provide context on inflation, the labor market and interest-rate policy. [Associated Press week-ahead preview]
Thursday, October 8 Weekly unemployment claims; preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey for October listed on the calendar Claims are a limited labor-market proxy; the survey gauges household views of the economy. [Associated Press week-ahead preview] [Kiplinger calendar]
Friday, October 9 University of Michigan October survey also appears on the Associated Press preview The previews differ on the survey’s day. Check the final release schedule before relying on a date. [Associated Press week-ahead preview]

The University of Michigan survey date is inconsistent across the cited calendars: Kiplinger lists it Thursday, while the AP preview places it Friday. Confirm the final schedule close to release rather than assuming either listing is definitive.

Is this a jobs or inflation report week?

No major Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs or inflation release is scheduled during October 5–9, according to the BLS calendar. The September Employment Situation report was scheduled for Friday, October 2, before this outlook week. September Consumer Price Index data is scheduled for October 14 and Producer Price Index data for October 15, after it. The BLS lists its calendar times in Eastern Time. Weekly unemployment claims are still due during the week, but they are not the monthly jobs report. Treat them as a more frequent, narrower indication of labor-market conditions, not a substitute for the Employment Situation release.

What does “season of strength” mean for October?

Historical averages can describe past patterns, but they cannot forecast the return for a particular week. The 2024 edition of the Stock Trader’s Almanac, using historical data through 2023, reports positive average October changes for three major indexes across its full sample. Its presidential-election-year October averages, however, are negative for all three. These are the Almanac’s reported historical averages, not independently recalculated figures. Index Average October change, full sample Average October change in presidential-election years
Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.8% −1.0%
S&P 500 1.0% −0.9%
Nasdaq 0.8% −2.2%

Each figure is a monthly average reported in the Almanac’s 2024 edition from data through 2023. The full-sample and election-year figures answer different questions: a broad October average does not imply that election-year Octobers have followed the same pattern. Neither set indicates what the market will do from October 5 to 9, 2026.

The exact-title syndicated summary describes Q4 as historically strong during U.S. midterm-election years, but the underlying Investor’s Business Daily article was not available for review. Which earnings reports are worth watching?

Kiplinger’s calendar lists a limited slate, including Lamb Weston and Constellation Brands later in the week, and no noteworthy reports on Monday. It labels dates tentative unless a company has officially announced them. Check each company’s investor-relations announcement before treating a listed date as firm; earnings schedules can change. How to use the week’s calendar

  • Separate data from interpretation: services surveys, claims and sentiment describe different aspects of the economy; the Fed minutes record policy discussion rather than announce a new decision.
  • Check the release schedule: the Michigan survey’s listed day differs between the cited previews, and company earnings dates may be tentative.
  • Keep the time horizon clear: monthly historical averages are not estimates of a single week’s return.
  • Avoid inferring a market call from the calendar alone: the available sources do not provide current index levels, market breadth, valuations or a specific analyst forecast for this week.
