U.S. stocks opened October modestly higher on Thursday, October 1, 2026: the S&P 500 rose 0.2%, while the Dow and Nasdaq each gained less than 0.1%. Micron advanced after reporting record fiscal-year results, and Mattel jumped on reported takeover interest—but Mattel’s announcement confirmed a leadership change, not a bid or deal terms.
How did the stock market do on October 1?
The market’s gains were small after bond yields rose sharply during the session and then gave back those advances, according to the Associated Press. The close left the S&P 500 down 1% for the week to date but up 12% for 2026 through October 1. Those are figures as of that session’s close, not current performance.
| Index | October 1 change | Closing level |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | +0.2% (up 14.91 points) | 7,666.45 |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Less than +0.1% (up 20.51 points) | 50,926.56 |
| Nasdaq Composite | Less than +0.1% (up 10.53 points) | 26,871.60 |
| Russell 2000 | +0.3% | 2,806.63 |

Why did Micron stock go up?
Micron shares finished roughly 3% higher on October 1, after trading lower earlier, as investors digested the company’s results and outlook, contemporaneous market coverage reported. That is a one-session move; it does not establish that the earnings report alone caused the rise.
#1 Best Overall
Micron had released its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on September 30. The company reported Q4 revenue of $54.229 billion, versus $11.315 billion in the same quarter of fiscal 2025. Full-year revenue was $133.188 billion, compared with $37.378 billion in fiscal 2025. These are company-reported figures.
For fiscal Q4, Micron reported GAAP net income of $37.701 billion and diluted GAAP earnings per share of $32.87. The company said AI-driven demand and operational execution positioned it for a record fiscal 2027. That is Micron’s explanation of its outlook, not an independent finding about what drove its results.

Mattel shares surged on October 1 after a Wall Street Journal report, cited in market coverage, said Authentic Brands Group had approached the company about possible takeover interest at more than $20 a share. The reported price and approach were not confirmed in Mattel’s announcement; they should not be treated as a signed deal, formal offer, or company guidance.

What Mattel did confirm on September 30 was a leadership succession. Roger Lynch, a current board member and independent lead director, was to become chairman effective October 2 and CEO effective on or before November 2. Ynon Kreiz was to step down from both positions effective October 2. Mattel’s release announced those changes, not a takeover offer or transaction terms. See Mattel’s leadership announcement.
The approach’s exact status and terms were not established by the company materials available for this article. Any later claim about a bid or agreement should be checked against a subsequent company filing or direct statement.
