Steam Deck Black Friday Sale 2023: OLED Prices, LCD Discounts and the Best Deal

Valve did not clearly discount the new OLED for Black Friday 2023. Here are the US OLED launch prices, LCD clearance prices, refurbished alternatives and accessory deals that actually mattered.

Short answer: Valve did not establish a conventional Black Friday discount on the new Steam Deck OLED in 2023. The OLED launched on November 16 at $549 for 512GB and $649 for 1TB, while Valve reduced and phased out older LCD configurations. The Steam Autumn Sale, held November 21–28, focused primarily on games and Steam Awards nominations, not a blanket hardware sale.

What was actually on sale?

Three events are often blended together under the phrase “Steam Deck Black Friday sale 2023,” but they affected different products:

  • OLED launch pricing: Valve announced the Steam Deck OLED on November 9, 2023, and released it November 16 at its announced prices.
  • LCD repricing: Existing LCD models became cheaper as Valve simplified the range and cleared outgoing inventory.
  • Steam Autumn Sale: This ran from November 21 at 10 a.m. Pacific through November 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific and was promoted primarily as a game sale with Steam Awards nominations.

The available announcements support an OLED launch and LCD lineup change more clearly than a separate OLED Black Friday campaign. Valve’s official sale announcement is available at Steam News.

Model November 2023 price signal What it meant
LCD 64GB Being phased out It was no longer the normal new entry model after the OLED announcement.
LCD 256GB $399 Became the regular LCD entry point after the lineup change.
LCD 512GB $449 while supplies lasted Outgoing premium LCD configuration, not an OLED-equivalent model.
OLED 512GB $549 New OLED entry model at announced launch pricing.
OLED 1TB $649 Premium OLED model at announced launch pricing.

Valve’s announcement and contemporaneous coverage describe the OLED specifications and the LCD changes at Ars Technica. The $399 LCD price should not be described simply as a discount on the former $529 256GB product: Valve changed which models were in the regular lineup. Likewise, the $449 LCD 512GB price was an “while supplies lasted” clearance signal, not a permanent replacement for the $649 OLED 1TB.

Was the Steam Deck OLED discounted for Black Friday?

No reliable evidence establishes a Black Friday markdown on the newly launched OLED models. Valve positioned the 512GB OLED at $549 and the 1TB OLED at $649 when they launched, with the older LCD hardware carrying the lower prices.

That makes claims such as “the OLED was 20% off” or “Valve slashed the OLED for Black Friday” unsafe without a dated Valve store listing or retailer transaction record. The evidence supports launch pricing for OLED and clearance or lineup-repricing for LCD.

OLED versus LCD: which was the better buy?

What the OLED added

  • 7.4-inch HDR OLED display instead of the LCD Deck’s 7-inch screen.
  • 90Hz refresh rate instead of 60Hz.
  • 50Wh battery instead of the original 40Wh battery.
  • Improved Wi-Fi hardware, contrast, black levels, color presentation and motion clarity.
  • Updated thermal, acoustic and physical components.
  • 512GB and 1TB built-in storage options.

What stayed broadly the same

The OLED was not a Steam Deck 2 or a major performance-generation jump. It delivers nearly the same general SteamOS and Steam-library experience, with the largest improvements in display quality, battery life, connectivity and refinement.

When the LCD made more financial sense

  • You wanted the lowest new purchase price.
  • You mostly played indoors or on a dock and did not prioritize HDR or 90Hz.
  • You already owned a large microSD card.
  • You preferred to spend the difference on games, storage or a dock.
  • A certified-refurbished LCD unit was substantially cheaper.

When the OLED justified its premium

  • You played handheld for long sessions.
  • Screen quality, HDR and motion clarity mattered.
  • Longer battery life and faster Wi-Fi were valuable.
  • You wanted 1TB built in and did not want an immediate storage upgrade.

Were refurbished Decks part of the deal?

Yes, but refurbished hardware was not a Black Friday-only promotion. Valve had introduced certified-refurbished Steam Decks in August 2023. Contemporaneous reporting said they were up to $130 below comparable new models and included the same one-year warranty as new units. See Ars Technica’s refurbished-unit report.

A certified-refurbished LCD could therefore undercut new LCD clearance pricing, depending on capacity and stock. Compare the exact storage size, warranty, condition description and return terms rather than assuming every refurbished listing is the same.

What Black Friday offered Steam Deck owners

The clearest conventional Black Friday opportunities were accessories rather than OLED hardware. Contemporaneous Steam-linked coverage highlighted discounted microSD cards and JSAUX ModCase products; one listing showed a ModCase at $26, down from $30. See the Steam-linked deal coverage.

MicroSD cards

A microSD card was the easiest way to expand storage without opening the Deck. Check the speed class, seller reputation, authenticity checks and return policy; a large capacity from an unknown marketplace seller may be counterfeit.

Internal SSDs

An NVMe SSD provides faster, cleaner primary storage, but installation requires opening the Deck and adds risk. It suits technically confident owners who are willing to follow a repair guide and restore or reinstall the operating system.

Cases, docks and charging gear

Cases can interfere with docks, buttons or ventilation. Cheap no-name docks may have inconsistent display output, Ethernet, firmware or charging behavior. Oversized power banks can be awkward for handheld use. Confirm USB-C Power Delivery support and physical compatibility before buying.

Should an existing LCD owner upgrade?

Upgrade when the OLED screen, HDR, battery capacity or newer connectivity would materially improve how you play. Keep the LCD when it already performs well, you mostly play docked, you expect a large frame-rate increase, or the cost of selling a recently purchased Deck would erase the benefit. If storage is the problem, a microSD card or SSD may solve it more cheaply.

How to interpret the 2023 deal terminology

  • Specify LCD or OLED and the storage capacity.
  • Label the price as regular launch pricing, clearance pricing or a temporary promotion.
  • Identify whether the unit was new, certified refurbished or used.
  • State that the table uses US prices and that regional prices differed.
  • Do not call the Steam Autumn Sale a hardware sale without a specific dated hardware listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Steam Deck have a Black Friday sale in 2023?

The evidence supports OLED launch pricing and lower LCD prices as Valve cleared and simplified the lineup, not a conventional Black Friday discount on OLED hardware.

What was the cheapest new Steam Deck in November 2023?

After the OLED-related lineup change, the regular LCD entry model was the 256GB version at $399 in the US.

Was the $449 LCD 512GB model the same value as the $649 OLED 1TB?

No. The LCD was an outgoing model with the older display and battery platform. The OLED added a 7.4-inch HDR 90Hz display, a 50Wh battery, improved Wi-Fi and other hardware revisions.

The Bottom Line

The real 2023 bargain was the cheaper outgoing LCD hardware, especially for value-focused or docked players. The OLED launched at $549/$649 as the better handheld experience, not as a Black Friday markdown. For many owners, the most practical Black Friday purchase was storage or another accessory.
