SPY vs. VOO vs. IVV: Which S&P 500 ETF Fits Your Portfolio?

SPY, VOO and IVV all offer S&P 500 exposure, but their stated fees and trading features differ. See what matters when choosing among them.

For a long-term investor who wants S&P 500 exposure, VOO and IVV have the lower stated expense ratios: 0.03% each, compared with SPY’s 0.0945% gross expense ratio. That fee difference is modest in dollars but can matter over time. SPY may be worth considering if its options availability or trading features fit your strategy. All three funds provide exposure to large U.S. companies, and none is a substitute for a globally diversified or capital-protected portfolio.

How are SPY, VOO and IVV alike?

All three are U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds designed to provide exposure to the S&P 500 or large-cap U.S. equities represented by it. State Street says SPY seeks, before expenses, to correspond generally to the S&P 500’s price and yield performance. Vanguard’s VOO fact sheet names the S&P 500 as its benchmark, and IVV’s SEC-filed prospectus identifies the S&P 500 as its underlying index.

The funds should not be treated as literally identical: holdings, distributions, returns and tax outcomes are not established as identical by these sources. Their shared benchmark also does not mean they cover every U.S. stock or the global market.

What is the fee difference?

ETF Stated expense ratio Source and date
SPY 0.0945% gross State Street Global Advisors product page, accessed October 4, 2026
VOO 0.03% Vanguard fact sheet as of June 30, 2026
IVV 0.03% annual fund operating expenses iShares Trust summary prospectus dated July 31, 2026

On a constant $10,000 balance, the 0.0645-percentage-point gap between SPY and either 0.03% fund works out to about $6.45 per year. This is arithmetic using the stated expense ratios, not a forecast of returns or a measure of total ownership cost. Brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, and the timing and size of trades can also affect an investor’s realized costs. The figures are dated issuer disclosures, so check the current prospectuses before investing.

When might SPY make sense?

State Street lists options availability for SPY and gives its inception date as January 22, 1993. Those facts may matter to an investor who actively trades or uses options; they are less likely to outweigh the recurring fee difference for someone simply holding an S&P 500 ETF. The available sources do not establish a same-date comparison of trading volume or bid-ask spreads across all three funds, so they do not support a definitive liquidity ranking.

Compare your actual brokerage costs, trade size and frequency, and the features you intend to use rather than assuming one ticker is automatically best for every trading style.

What should a long-term investor weigh between VOO and IVV?

Both report a 0.03% stated expense ratio in the dated sources above. That does not prove that they will have identical holdings or outcomes. IVV’s prospectus reports 3% portfolio turnover for its most recent fiscal year and explains that tracking can differ from the index because of expenses, cash holdings, timing, index changes, taxes and other factors. The filing also notes that turnover can involve transaction costs and may result in higher taxes in taxable accounts.

Vanguard says ETF shares trade continuously in the secondary market through a stockbroker, can trade above or below net asset value (NAV), and may involve brokerage commissions. Buyers can pay more than NAV, and sellers can receive less. Those market-price considerations are relevant to ETF trading generally, not a claim that one of these funds always trades more favorably.

What does S&P 500 exposure leave out?

The S&P 500 is a large-cap U.S. equity index, not a complete measure of the U.S. stock market. In its prospectus, iShares says the index represented approximately 88% of the market capitalization of publicly traded U.S. equities as of March 31, 2026, and notes significant representation in consumer and technology sectors. The figure is date-specific; it does not mean the index owns 88% of all U.S. companies.

All three ETFs are exposed to stock-market losses. IVV’s prospectus says investors could lose some or all of their investment and that the fund may perform worse than other investments. Vanguard likewise warns that ETF products may result in a loss of principal. An S&P 500 ETF is therefore not capital-protected and does not by itself provide international stock or broad bond exposure.

How to choose for your portfolio

  • For a straightforward long-term S&P 500 holding: VOO and IVV have the lower stated expense ratios in the cited materials. Decide between them using account availability and your own implementation preferences.
  • For options or frequent trading: SPY’s documented options availability may be useful. Compare the costs and execution conditions for your own trades; the cited facts do not establish a universal trading-cost winner.
  • For a taxable account: Do not infer a universal tax-efficiency ranking from the available data. Tax effects depend on your circumstances; IVV’s prospectus notes turnover-related costs may result in higher taxes, while SPY’s after-tax return warning says those figures depend on an investor’s tax situation and are not relevant to tax-deferred accounts such as 401(k)s or IRAs.
  • For a diversified portfolio: Consider whether large-cap U.S. stocks alone meet your allocation needs. These funds do not represent all U.S. stocks, global equities, or a protected investment.

Account type, fractional-share access, tax circumstances, trading needs and personal preferences can affect implementation. This comparison is educational, not individualized investment or tax advice.
