Yes. Spotify tested restricting lyrics to Premium subscribers, but it did not establish a permanent, universal paywall. Spotify’s current support documentation says standard lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, although access can vary by song, device, market, and rights-holder agreements. Premium’s clearest lyrics-specific extra is offline access, which Spotify said is rolling out to Premium users.
How Spotify’s lyrics policy changed
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| November 18, 2021 | Spotify announced that in-app lyrics were available globally to Free and Premium users. Spotify Newsroom |
| September 2023 | Spotify confirmed a limited test that prompted some Free users to subscribe to Premium to see lyrics. The company did not publish a complete list of affected countries, accounts, devices, or the test’s duration. TechCrunch’s report |
| May 2024 | Reports described some Free users seeing a Premium prompt or a limit of about three lyric pages per month. That number was reported for some users, not announced as a universal Spotify limit. Spotify said feature availability could vary by tier, market, and device. TechCrunch’s report |
| July 2024 | Spotify said it was expanding lyrics access for Free users globally. It did not disclose the new monthly limit, so the announcement does not establish that Free lyrics became unlimited. TechCrunch’s report |
| February 4, 2026 | Spotify announced lyric translations and previews for Free and Premium users, alongside a rollout of offline lyrics for Premium users. Spotify Newsroom |
What Spotify users can access now
Spotify’s lyrics support page lists lyrics as available to both Free and Premium users. It also cautions that lyrics may not be available for every track or device, and that market and rights-holder agreements can affect access. The feature is therefore not a guarantee that every song will display lyrics on every account.

How to check whether lyrics are missing because of the song or your account
On mobile, open the Now Playing screen and swipe up from the bottom to look for lyrics. Spotify’s support instructions also describe lyric previews in Now Playing: use the three-dot menu and check the Lyrics setting. Menu labels and availability can differ by device. Spotify’s lyrics instructions

- Play a track that is likely to have lyrics, then open Now Playing and swipe up on the mobile screen.
- Try a second, well-known track. If lyrics appear for one song but not another, the issue may be track-specific.
- Try the same account on another supported device. Spotify says device availability can vary.
- Update the Spotify app and check again if the lyrics control is missing.
- If a message says “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium,” your account may be affected by a tier restriction or test. That message does not establish a universal policy for all Free users.
- If listening to a downloaded track without a connection, note that offline lyrics are part of Spotify’s Premium rollout.
Market differences, phased rollouts, rights-holder agreements, and account experiments can also produce different results. Spotify’s documentation does not identify a missing lyrics button by itself as proof that Premium is required.
Why Spotify might test a lyrics paywall—and what is not known
Lyrics are a feature listeners may actively seek while a song is playing, so limiting them can create a visible reason for a Free listener to consider Premium. That is a plausible business rationale for testing a subscription prompt, not a publicly confirmed account of Spotify’s internal goals or results. Spotify has not disclosed conversion figures or a formal outcome for the experiment in the cited reports.

Expanding Free access later could reflect a judgment that lyrics are more valuable for engagement and discovery than as a stand-alone paywall, or that a narrower Premium benefit works better than a broad restriction. Those are possibilities, not confirmed explanations. The documented change is that Spotify said it would expand Free access in July 2024; the sources do not establish why.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Premium worth paying for if you mainly want lyrics?
| Your use | What the published feature split suggests |
|---|---|
| Occasional lyric lookups | Free may be enough when the track and device support lyrics. |
| Translations | Premium is not required solely for translations, which Spotify says are rolling out to both tiers. |
| Lyrics without an internet connection | Offline lyrics are the clearest lyrics-specific Premium advantage described in Spotify’s 2026 announcement; availability is still rolling out. |
| Frequent listening, including offline music and ad-free playback | Consider Premium for its broader listening benefits as well as offline lyrics, rather than treating ordinary lyrics as exclusive to the paid tier. |
