Spotify acquired music-discovery service WhoSampled in November 2025. The deal brings WhoSampled’s data on samples, remixes and cover versions into Spotify’s products, most visibly through SongDNA, an interactive feature in the Now Playing view. Spotify and WhoSampled have not disclosed a purchase price or detailed transaction terms.

What Spotify bought

WhoSampled is a database and discovery platform that maps relationships among recordings, including samples, remixes and cover versions. Its described audience includes DJs, producers and listeners who want to trace how songs connect.

WhoSampled’s founder said the service would continue as a standalone platform and brand. Spotify’s later announcements identify WhoSampled as part of Spotify, so the acquisition combines an independent discovery service with Spotify’s listening products rather than replacing the WhoSampled brand outright.

What SongDNA does

Spotify announced SongDNA in beta on March 24, 2026, as a feature rolling out to Premium users. In the Now Playing view, it lets listeners explore a track’s creative relationships and move between connected people and recordings.

Relationships SongDNA can surface

  • Songwriters and other credited contributors
  • Producers and collaborators
  • Samples
  • Interpolations
  • Cover versions

Spotify describes the feature as a way to follow a song’s creative lineage instead of treating each track as an isolated item. Jacqueline Ankner, Spotify’s Head of Songwriter & Publisher Partnerships, said SongDNA is intended to make that lineage more transparent for fans.

Where the WhoSampled data fits

Spotify’s April 20, 2026 announcement says SongDNA is powered by WhoSampled. Spotify also says the connections combine information supplied by artists and their teams with community-sourced material.

That combination matters because relationships such as an interpolation or an uncredited influence can require specialist knowledge. It does not mean every song has a complete or error-free map of contributors and influences. The available announcements do not provide a comparative accuracy or completeness measurement.

Who can use it, and what is not yet certain

SongDNA was announced as a beta rolling out to Premium users, but the announcements do not establish availability for every Premium account, song, country, device or app version. Coverage can therefore vary during the rollout. Readers should look for the feature in Spotify’s Now Playing view and keep the app updated, but its absence does not by itself indicate a billing or account problem.

The announcements also do not say that Spotify acquired WhoSampled to train generative artificial intelligence. The stated rationale is music discovery and richer relationship data.

What the acquisition means for Spotify users

More context inside playback

Listeners can investigate who made a track and which recordings connect to it without leaving the listening experience for a separate search.

A bridge between casual listening and specialist research

Sample hunters, producers and DJs can use the same relationship-oriented approach associated with WhoSampled while starting from a song in Spotify.

A broader data asset for Spotify’s products

Owning the service gives Spotify a direct connection to a specialist catalog and its discovery expertise. The public announcements establish SongDNA as the current product use; they do not establish additional products, revenue effects or catalog totals.

What this means financially

For consumers, SongDNA is an in-app feature rather than a separately priced WhoSampled hardware or media product. The cited announcements do not state that SongDNA carries an additional fee beyond the applicable Spotify plan.

For anyone assessing Spotify as a business, the defensible takeaway is strategic: the company is investing in proprietary music metadata and discovery. There is not enough public information in the announcements to calculate the acquisition’s cost, return, effect on Spotify’s financial statements or impact on subscription pricing. No purchase price, deal structure or detailed financial terms have been disclosed.
