The Sports Illustrated Union said it was “horrified” after Futurism reported in November 2023 that Sports Illustrated articles appeared alongside fabricated writer identities and may have been generated with artificial intelligence. The union demanded answers from The Arena Group, then the magazine’s operator. Arena disputed that the articles themselves were AI-generated and said its licensing partner, AdVon Commerce, had assured it that the work was written and edited by humans.
What Futurism reported
Futurism published its initial report on November 27, 2023. The coverage questioned whether some Sports Illustrated articles had been produced with AI and whether writer names, biographies and profile photographs represented real journalists.
On November 28, Futurism reported the union’s reaction under the headline “Sports Illustrated Union Says It’s ‘Horrified’ by Publication of AI-Generated Writers.” The union’s language was conditional: it said that if true, the practices would violate its beliefs about journalism. “Horrified” was the union’s response to a report, not a judicial finding or an independently adjudicated conclusion that every disputed article was AI-generated.
Futurism also reported that sources it consulted disagreed with Arena’s account of how the stories were produced. That creates a disputed authorship question, not an established fact that all of the articles were written by software.

What the Sports Illustrated Union alleged and requested
In its official statement dated November 29, 2023, the Sports Illustrated Union said it remained outraged over reporting that The Arena Group had published “AI-generated content with fabricated bylines and writer profiles under SI’s name.” That sentence is the union’s allegation and should be read as such.
The union said Arena’s public response had not adequately explained what happened and that management had not personally taken accountability. It demanded that the company explain how the posts were published and why it partnered with AdVon Commerce.

The union’s four main demands
- An explanation of the publishing process: how the disputed material reached Sports Illustrated’s site and why AdVon was involved.
- A dated timeline: covering the AdVon partnership, when concerns became known, the investigation, contact from Futurism, any takedown of material and termination of the AdVon contract. The requested timeline was a demand for disclosure, not proof that every event listed occurred exactly as phrased.
- Union participation: a union representative included in the internal investigation.
- A future human-work commitment: a public guarantee that future SI editorial work would be performed by humans, with that commitment included in the next union contract.
The union warned that it could withhold bylines if management did not meet its demands. In a statement quoted by Futurism, it said: “We demand the company commit to adhering to basic journalistic standards, including not publishing computer-written stories by fake people.”
The union also characterized SI staff as having maintained high ethical standards “for nearly 70 years.” That is the union’s description of its tradition, not an independently measured statistic.

What The Arena Group said
Sports Business Journal reported on November 28 that an Arena spokesperson said the disputed articles were licensed from AdVon and that AdVon had assured Arena they were written and edited by humans. Arena also said some stories had been published under pen names or pseudonyms to protect author privacy.
Futurism reported that Arena attributed the controversy to AdVon and pushed back on the assertion that the stories themselves were AI-generated, while sources cited by Futurism said otherwise. Arena’s explanation does not independently establish who wrote the disputed articles, and the union’s allegation does not by itself resolve the authorship dispute.

How the competing accounts differ
| Source | Position | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Futurism, November 27–28, 2023 | Reported possible AI-generated articles and fabricated writer identities; cited sources who disputed Arena’s account. | Futurism made the initial report and presented competing claims. Its reporting does not make every allegation an adjudicated fact. |
| Sports Illustrated Union, November 28–29, 2023 | Called the report “horrifying” and “outrageous,” alleged AI content and fabricated bylines and profiles, and demanded transparency and safeguards. | The union publicly stated its allegations and requested remedies. It did not publish an independent ruling. |
| The Arena Group, as reported by Sports Business Journal | Said AdVon had represented that the work was written and edited by humans; said some bylines were pseudonyms used for privacy. | Arena’s reported defense is a company statement. It does not independently verify the disputed authorship. |
What happened to Sports Illustrated’s publisher afterward
The publishing arrangement changed several months later. The Associated Press reported on March 18, 2024, that Minute Media took over Sports Illustrated’s print and digital publishing operations under an agreement with Authentic Brands Group, which owns the brand. AP also reported that Arena’s publishing license had been revoked earlier in 2024 after a missed payment.
Minute’s corporate site lists Sports Illustrated among its content brands, and its current SI terms page identifies Sports Publishing Solutions Inc. and affiliates as the service provider. Those pages document the later publishing relationship; they do not establish that the union’s requested remedies were adopted, that the next union contract included a human-only guarantee, or what detailed AI rules currently govern SI editorial work.

What remains unresolved
- The reviewed contemporaneous accounts do not independently settle whether the specific disputed articles were generated by AI.
- They do not establish whether every questioned writer identity was fabricated, as opposed to being a pen name or pseudonym.
- There is no documented confirmation in these sources that Arena accepted the union’s investigation and contract demands.
- Minute Media’s later role does not, by itself, resolve the 2023 dispute or prove the adoption of a current editorial AI policy.
Why the wording matters
The controversy combines three different things: a news report, a union’s reaction and demands, and a publisher’s denial and explanation. Saying simply that Sports Illustrated “published AI-generated writers” removes the uncertainty that remained in the contemporaneous record. A precise account is that Futurism reported allegations; the union said it was horrified and sought transparency; and Arena said AdVon had assured it that the articles were produced by humans, while the underlying authorship remained disputed.
