Short answer: SpaceX has not publicly launched an independent, retail Starlink cellphone carrier in the United States as of August 18, 2026. The phone service available today is primarily T-Mobile’s T-Satellite with Starlink, which uses Starlink satellites through a carrier partnership. SpaceX is reportedly preparing a direct-to-consumer mobile business and says it intends to add terrestrial wireless infrastructure, but its launch date, prices, coverage map, phone list and signup process remain unconfirmed.
What Starlink Mobile is—and is not—today
The headline “SpaceX launches Starlink Mobile 5G cell phone carrier service” describes a possible future business as though it were a completed launch. Publicly documented facts support a narrower conclusion:
- Available now: Starlink Direct to Cell, supplied through mobile-network partners, and T-Mobile’s consumer T-Satellite service.
- Reported or developing: a Starlink-branded retail mobile service for U.S. consumers.
- Not confirmed: a nationwide independent carrier, consumer plan lineup, launch date, coverage map, supported-phone list or official enrollment page.
Starlink’s Direct to Cell materials describe satellites connecting ordinary compatible phones through telecommunications partners and partner spectrum: Starlink Direct to Cell overview. That makes SpaceX a satellite network supplier in the current U.S. arrangement—not yet the customer’s independent cellphone carrier.
What T-Mobile’s T-Satellite with Starlink provides
T-Mobile markets T-Satellite with Starlink as an extension of its mobile service when terrestrial coverage is unavailable. Supported phones can connect to satellites outdoors and may show network labels such as “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink,” according to T-Mobile’s support documentation: T-Mobile satellite support.
#1 Best Overall
- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
T-Mobile’s current consumer pages advertise an add-on at $10 per month per line in the relevant service flow, while some eligible plans include satellite access or receive different treatment. Pricing, taxes, eligibility and included features can change, so check the live pages before ordering: T-Satellite service page and satellite-service selection page.
What it can do
Advertised capabilities include text messaging, wireless emergency alerts, location-dependent satellite connectivity and selected satellite-ready apps. T-Mobile presents voice calling and broader data capabilities as future development rather than as a replacement for a normal terrestrial network.
Phone and setup requirements
T-Mobile publishes a changing list of compatible Apple, Samsung and Motorola devices. A supported model may still need current iOS or Android software, suitable account provisioning, eSIM capability and an eligible plan. Carrier locking, regional rules and the phone’s modem can matter. Satellite access generally requires an outdoor view toward a reasonably unobstructed sky; buildings, dense foliage, steep terrain and congestion can prevent registration or reduce reliability.

What SpaceX is reportedly building
Reuters, relaying a Financial Times report, said SpaceX was considering a retail Starlink mobile product and possibly its own U.S. terrestrial network. Reuters noted that it could not independently verify the initial report: reported retail-service plan and Reuters source.

In an August 2026 report, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell said the company intends to build terrestrial infrastructure using spectrum acquired from EchoStar so Starlink can become “a true mobile service.” That is management’s stated direction, not evidence that customers can already buy a national Starlink phone plan: reported Shotwell comments.
Why the EchoStar spectrum purchase matters
Reuters reported that SpaceX acquired 65 MHz of wireless spectrum from EchoStar for approximately $19.6 billion across two transactions. The transaction documents are available from EchoStar and the SEC filing.

- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
Satellite beams can extend coverage over remote areas, but they do not provide the same capacity as a dense network of terrestrial cells in cities. Spectrum with terrestrial rights could let SpaceX deploy ground-based radios where satellite capacity, propagation or congestion would otherwise be limiting. SpaceX could also use Starlink for backhaul to some sites.
The prospective model is therefore hybrid:
- Satellite layer: direct-to-phone service in remote areas and dead zones.
- Terrestrial layer: SpaceX-controlled cellular infrastructure for capacity in populated areas.
- Network integration: Starlink satellites, ground stations, backhaul and possibly roaming or wholesale arrangements.
- Retail layer: direct billing, eSIM activation and potentially mobile bundles for Starlink broadband customers.
Buying spectrum does not by itself create a working nationwide network. The usable bands, geographic rights, FCC authorizations, interference protections and build-out obligations still determine what SpaceX can deploy and where.
Is Starlink Mobile really 5G?
“5G” can describe a radio technology or a consumer experience; those are not the same thing. Current T-Mobile satellite service is primarily marketed for messaging and selected low-bandwidth functions outside terrestrial coverage. It should not be assumed to deliver ordinary urban 5G speeds, unlimited video streaming or low-latency gaming.

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
Starlink says future-generation V2 satellites are intended to support “full 5G cellular connectivity” in many environments and provide substantially greater direct-to-phone throughput: Starlink Mobile. That is a forward-looking company claim, not proof of current nationwide performance.
Actual satellite performance depends on sky visibility, satellite position, shared beam capacity, handset capability, spectrum, regulatory limits and congestion. A satellite link that successfully sends a text is not automatically equivalent to a nearby terrestrial 5G cell.

What customers should do now
- Check T-Mobile’s official T-Satellite page and confirm whether your plan and location qualify.
- Verify your exact phone model and operating-system requirements on T-Mobile’s support page.
- Compare the advertised $10-per-line add-on with your actual need for occasional off-grid messaging; do not treat it as satellite broadband.
- Do not submit payment or personal information to a “Starlink cellphone signup” page unless it is linked from Starlink or an authorized carrier.
- If you need emergency messaging rather than a cellular replacement, compare established satellite-messenger services such as Garmin inReach, ZOLEO or Bivy; verify current device and subscription terms directly.
