The cuts followed the backlash over its May 2024 app redesign, but Sonos did not say that the app alone caused the layoffs or that the affected employees were specifically app developers.
The company’s stated diagnosis was broader: too many organizational layers, slow collaboration, weak prioritization and too many partially committed projects. The reduction came shortly after Patrick Spence stepped down as chief executive and board member, with Tom Conrad becoming interim CEO.
What Sonos announced
In an employee announcement dated February 5, 2025, Sonos said it would eliminate about 200 positions. “Positions” is the company’s wording; it did not publish a detailed count of individual employees or a geographic breakdown. Sonos described the move as a company-wide reorganization rather than a reduction confined to one product team.
Affected employees were promised severance based on tenure. Sonos also said restricted stock units would continue vesting through February 15, employees on the quarterly bonus plan could remain eligible for a first-quarter bonus if it was attained, and U.S. employees would receive health-care coverage through the severance period. Sonos’s announcement did not identify which departments bore the largest share of the cuts.

- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
The new organizational model
Sonos said it was moving away from separate business units organized around individual product categories. Instead, work would be grouped into smaller, flatter functions covering:
- Hardware
- Software
- Design
- Quality
- Operations
The stated goals were faster decisions, better collaboration, clearer priorities and fewer projects receiving only partial commitment. Hardware remained one of the core functions, so the announcement was not an admission that Sonos was abandoning physical products.
How the app crisis set the context
Sonos announced a substantially redesigned app on April 23, 2024, and began rolling it out in May. The company presented it as a new home for music services, content discovery and system controls, with a customizable home screen. Sonos’s launch announcement described the intended redesign.

After release, many users reported missing or relocated features, difficulty finding and managing music, problems discovering or connecting speakers, inconsistent controls and reliability or performance issues. The experience was not identical for every device, operating system, music service or speaker configuration, so it is inaccurate to say the app was unusable for every owner.

The criticism was unusually damaging because the app is the control layer for an installed hardware ecosystem. A speaker can remain physically functional while its everyday value declines if owners cannot reliably group rooms, browse services, change settings or control playback. Contemporary coverage reported that Patrick Spence apologized in July 2024 and outlined corrective work. MacRumors reported on the backlash and repair effort.
Did the app failure cause the layoffs?
Not as an officially established one-to-one cause. The timing makes the app crisis important context, and Sonos had devoted substantial attention to restoring the customer experience. But the February announcement attributed the restructuring to organizational complexity, slow collaboration, prioritization problems and too many layers—not to a statement that 200 app staff were being dismissed.

- Sonos did not say the affected positions belonged to the app team.
- It did not say the app failure alone caused the reduction.
- It did not publish a department-by-department staffing breakdown.
- There is no public basis for concluding that every employee involved in the app was either retained or dismissed.
The defensible description is that Sonos cut about 200 positions amid fallout from the troubled redesign. Saying the company laid off 200 employees because of the app goes beyond what Sonos officially established.
Leadership and financial pressure
On January 13, 2025, Patrick Spence announced that he would step down as CEO and a board member. Sonos appointed board member and Pandora founder Tom Conrad interim CEO. Sonos’s leadership announcement does not say Spence was removed specifically because of the app, so “stepped down amid the fallout” is more accurate than “was fired over the app.”

Contemporary reporting said Sonos revenue declined 16% in fiscal fourth-quarter 2024. That figure should be checked against the relevant company filing before being treated as a definitive financial attribution. A revenue decline can reflect several factors; neither Sonos’s layoff announcement nor the cited reporting proves that the app caused the entire decline.

The commercial risks were nevertheless clear: damaged trust could delay purchases, increase support demands and force the company to spend resources stabilizing software instead of advancing products. Reports also said Sonos temporarily paused or deprioritized some hardware work while concentrating on the app, and that it was exploring additional hardware, including a premium streaming box. Those roadmap details were reported externally and do not prove that any particular product was canceled. MacRumors provided that context; its Sonos coverage index is at this page.
How large was the reduction?
Outside coverage described the reduction as roughly 12% of Sonos’s workforce. That percentage is a reported estimate, not an exact figure announced by Sonos. Techmeme’s contemporaneous aggregation identified the approximately 12% calculation. See the Techmeme source page.

What the announcement does not establish
- Existing speakers will stop working.
- Sonos is exiting hardware.
- The app has been permanently abandoned.
- All products will lose software support.
- A particular model has been discontinued.
What owners and buyers should consider
Sonos ownership depends on more than speaker hardware: it also relies on apps, accounts, firmware, cloud services and music-service integrations. That makes software reliability a material part of the product, not an optional extra. Owners with large installations also face switching costs if they decide to replace an entire ecosystem.

Existing owners do not need to treat the layoffs alone as proof that their equipment is unsafe or unsupported. Buyers should instead check current app performance, compatibility, warranty terms and return policies on the live product page before purchasing. A buyer who values integrated multiroom control may still prefer Sonos; someone especially concerned about cloud dependence, platform lock-in or software disruption should compare alternatives rather than relying only on Sonos’s past reputation.

The broader business lesson
The episode shows why a software rollout can become a company-wide crisis for a premium hardware brand. A single update can affect an entire installed base, damage trust faster than hardware quality changes and expose the cost of organizational complexity. Sonos’s own explanation focused on making teams flatter and more focused; the app backlash explains why that diagnosis arrived under intense public scrutiny, but it does not convert the layoffs into a proven app-only cause.
