Soluna’s strategy is to put data centers beside renewable power plants when grid constraints or limited local demand may make some generation difficult to sell. CEO John Belizaire says the company is shifting from Bitcoin-mining-focused development toward AI infrastructure, but the projects and grid benefits he discusses should be read as company plans and claims—not proof that every planned megawatt is operating or that a defined amount of electricity is being absorbed.
What is Soluna’s model, and what makes it different?
“Soluna is a data center development company, but with a unique power development platform inside the business,” Belizaire told Senior News Writer Shane Snider in a Data Center Knowledge interview published February 24, 2026. He says Soluna partners with utility-scale renewable plant owners and builds computing facilities next to generation that may be hard to sell because of grid constraints or insufficient local demand. “We solve that problem by co-locating data centers directly next to those plants.”
The idea is to bring a power-consuming customer to a generation site rather than rely solely on delivering electricity over a constrained transmission path to a distant data center. Whether a particular site actually uses otherwise-curtailed power depends on its contracts, grid connection, operating pattern and measured energy flows; the interview does not provide an audited project-level energy balance. How is Soluna’s strategy changing with AI demand?
Belizaire says Soluna historically built facilities primarily for Bitcoin mining and evolved its development model toward AI infrastructure over the 18 months preceding the interview. The shift does not mean the company’s existing mining sites have all become AI data centers: the interview describes both mining operations and proposed AI/HPC capacity.

Bitcoin and operating capacity
As reported in the February 24, 2026 interview, Project Dorothy was operational at two Texas sites, with 98 MW described as serving Bitcoin hosting and mining. Soluna also reported a 3 GW development pipeline and a recent 6 MW expansion of its Blockware partnership at Dorothy 1. A pipeline is a collection of prospective projects, not a statement that all that capacity is financed, built, energized or in service; the reported figures are not a current capacity check.
Project Kati: distinguish the build from the AI plan
The interview describes Project Kati in Willacy County, Texas, as a planned 166 MW project combining Bitcoin mining and AI/HPC uses. Its 83 MW Bitcoin facility was described as being built. Kati 1 had begun initial energization, with commissioning expected to proceed in phases through 2026. Belizaire separately described starting with 100 MW of AI capacity and a plan to scale beyond 300 MW. Those AI figures are plans, not confirmation that a 100 MW AI campus—or the larger proposed scale—is already operational.

The project discussion mentions nearby wind farms and shared substation infrastructure, but gives no audited breakdown of electricity generated, curtailed, purchased or consumed at Kati. The reported 166 MW project figure, the 83 MW Bitcoin build and the proposed AI capacity describe different parts or stages of the plan; they should not be added together as if they were all live capacity.
Why does Soluna say remote campuses can work for AI?
Belizaire says Soluna is targeting single-tenant hyperscalers and large neo-cloud providers, with remote campuses aimed at batchable AI-training workloads. Training jobs can be scheduled and run away from end users, unlike many interactive applications where network delay directly affects the user experience. In his words, “Latency isn’t the primary concern – time to power and scale are.”

That is a workload-specific argument, not a claim that distance never matters. A remote training site must still meet a customer’s requirements for connectivity, reliability, capacity, security and delivery timing. The interview does not establish customer contracts or operating performance for the proposed AI campuses. Remote, smaller sites may suit some enterprise, neo-cloud and confidential-compute customers, while other workloads may need different locations.
What does the “grid revolution” claim mean?
“The grid is going through a revolution,” Belizaire said. He argues that AI’s power needs are changing the scale and location of data-center development, and discusses possible changes in generation, transmission, interconnection queues and regulation. Those are his outlook and predictions, not settled outcomes demonstrated by the interview.

The interview cites 3.4 TWh of wind and solar energy curtailed in California, attributing the figure to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), but does not identify the year. It therefore cannot be treated as a current annual total. The interview also says detailed national curtailment data are limited and supplies no nationwide figure. A California statistic cannot by itself establish how much energy Soluna’s projects capture or what their effect is on the grid.

Co-location can address a mismatch between where electricity is generated and where it can be used, but a project’s real-world value depends on details the interview does not resolve. Useful questions for evaluating a specific site include:

- Power availability: Is the facility consuming electricity that would otherwise be curtailed, or does it draw from a broader grid mix? What do metered energy flows show?
- Grid and interconnection: What transmission constraints, interconnection approvals and shared-substation arrangements apply to the project?
- Workload fit: Can the intended training jobs tolerate the site’s location and connectivity, and is the capacity committed to a named customer?
- Project status: Which megawatts are planned, under construction, initially energized, commissioned or operating? These milestones are not interchangeable.
- Environmental evidence: Are emissions and renewable-use claims supported by a disclosed methodology, time period and comparison basis?
The interview says Soluna claims its data centers are 18% cleaner than traditional builds, but does not supply the methodology or comparison basis. That figure is a company claim and cannot establish an independently verified emissions advantage on the information provided. The article’s reality check also leaves the model’s overall power impact as an open question rather than treating the company’s framing as a proven grid benefit.
