Solana mainnet charges a SOL-denominated fee based on signatures plus any priority fee; Ethereum mainnet charges for gas in ETH. Both have distinct milestones between a transaction being included and reaching protocol finality. Ethereum Layer 2 networks change the comparison again: each has its own fees, security design, and withdrawal experience.
Which is cheaper for payments: Solana or Ethereum?
It depends on the transaction, network conditions, and the moment you measure it. Solana’s documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, with an optional priority fee. Ethereum’s documentation gives 21,000 gas as the illustrative amount for a simple ETH transfer; gas is a unit of computational work, not a dollar quote. The fee in either case also depends on the asset’s exchange rate, and Ethereum’s cost depends on the gas price when the transaction is processed.
For a meaningful comparison, price the same payment on the named networks at the same observation time and convert both costs into the same fiat currency. Specify the token and whether the payment is a simple transfer or a smart-contract transaction. A smart-contract payment can use a different amount of gas than a simple ETH transfer.
How Solana fees work
Solana transactions pay a fee in SOL. The base fee is calculated per signature; a transaction may also include a prioritization fee based on its requested compute-unit limit and configured compute-unit price. Because the priority fee uses the requested limit, not just the compute actually consumed, transaction setup affects the fee. Solana fees are charged whether a transaction succeeds or fails. Network demand and transaction configuration can also affect whether it lands promptly. See the Solana fee overview and fee structure.

How Ethereum mainnet fees work
On Ethereum mainnet, users pay in ETH for gas, which measures computational work. A transaction’s fee is based on gas used multiplied by the base fee plus any priority tip. The base fee changes with recent block demand and is burned; the tip incentivizes validators. Ethereum.org’s example of 21,000 gas applies to a simple ETH transfer, not every payment. For the mechanics and example, see Ethereum’s gas documentation.
Lamports and gas are different protocol units, so comparing their raw numbers is not useful. Compare the actual fee for a specified payment, in the same fiat currency and at the same time. If an Ethereum L2 is involved, name it and account for both its user-facing charges and the cost of publishing data to Ethereum where applicable.

Is Solana faster than Ethereum for payments?
Solana documentation describes block times of about 400 milliseconds. Ethereum proof-of-stake slots are 12 seconds, with 32 slots in an epoch. These figures describe block production and protocol timing; they are not equivalent promises that a payment is settled in that time. A transaction can be visible in a block before it reaches the network’s protocol finality threshold.
| Network measure | What the documentation says | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Solana block time | About 400 ms, as described in Solana’s markets documentation. | Not a guarantee that every payment is final in about 400 ms. |
| Solana finality | Finality is defined in terms of nodes representing two-thirds of stake sharing a common root; see Solana terminology. | Not the same event as block production or initial inclusion. |
| Ethereum slot and epoch | 12 seconds per slot and 32 slots per epoch, according to Ethereum’s proof-of-stake documentation. | Not a transaction’s guaranteed time to finality. |
| Ethereum finality | Uses supermajority links between checkpoints, as described in the proof-of-stake documentation. | Not equivalent to seeing a transaction included in a proposed block. |
For a payment product, choose confirmation rules according to the loss the business could bear if a payment were later reversed or failed to settle. A merchant might accept an earlier confirmation for a low-value, reversible transaction; a higher-value or less reversible payment may justify waiting for stronger settlement assurance. Neither protocol’s timing figures alone determine the right policy.

How Ethereum Layer 2s change the comparison
Ethereum L2s are not a single fee or speed setting. Rollups execute transactions off mainnet and publish data to Ethereum, spreading some costs across transactions. The amount users pay and the security and withdrawal experience depend on the specific implementation and its fee components. For a fair comparison, name the L2 rather than describing it simply as “Ethereum.”
Optimistic and ZK rollups
Optimistic rollups rely on challenge or fraud-proof mechanisms. Withdrawals back to Ethereum can involve a challenge period; a liquidity provider may offer a faster exit for a fee. ZK rollups publish validity proofs. These are different designs, and neither label alone tells a user the full fee, security, or exit experience. See Ethereum’s explanations of optimistic rollups and ZK rollups, along with its overview of Ethereum scaling.

When comparing a particular L2 with Solana mainnet, check the fee for the same specified payment, user-visible time to inclusion, time to the settlement assurance you require, supported tokens and wallets, and the L2’s data-publication and withdrawal path. Include operator charges as well as any cost associated with Ethereum data settlement. These are comparison criteria, not a universal performance ranking.

A low quoted fee does not by itself make a payment system reliable in production. Solana’s production guide says public RPC endpoints are rate-limited and do not provide an SLA; it also notes that transaction setup and competition for block space matter for transaction landing. The guide recommends production RPC infrastructure and careful transaction configuration, including fresh blockhashes and suitable compute-budget and priority-fee choices where appropriate. Real SOL is needed for mainnet fees; devnet is a separate environment. See Solana’s production-readiness guidance.

Solana’s finance documentation covers workflows for sending, accepting, and reconciling stablecoin payments. A business still needs to make separate decisions about accepted assets, custody, compliance, refunds, accounting, conversion, and liquidity. Protocol fees do not establish a chain’s total payment-processing cost, merchant adoption, payment volume, or fiat off-ramp quality. The official materials cited here do not provide comparable, independently verified adoption or payment-volume statistics for both networks.
Quick Recap
How to choose a payment route
- Define the payment. Specify the asset, value, transfer type, and whether a smart contract is involved.
- Name the network. Compare Solana mainnet with Ethereum mainnet or a particular Ethereum L2—not with an unspecified “Ethereum” option.
- Measure total user fees at one time. Convert fees into the same fiat currency and include applicable priority, operator, and data-publication charges.
- Set the confirmation policy. Decide whether the use case can accept early inclusion or needs stronger protocol settlement assurance.
- Test the operating path. Check wallet and token support, RPC service and recovery behavior, and—in the case of an L2—its security model and withdrawal route.
- Assess the rest of the payment stack. Validate custody, compliance, refunds, reconciliation, conversion, liquidity, and fiat access for the business’s region and customers.
