Re:

Solana Fees and Confirmation Times: What Users Should Expect

Solana charges a documented base fee per signature, with optional priority fees that can improve scheduling odds but cannot guarantee confirmation time.

Solana’s documented base network fee is 5,000 lamports per charged signature, but that is not necessarily the total fee for a transaction. An optional priority fee can add to it, and paying one may improve the chance that a current leader schedules the transaction ahead of competing transactions—it does not guarantee confirmation by a particular time. A confirmed transaction and a finalized transaction also represent different levels of network agreement.

How much does a Solana transaction cost?

Solana’s documentation lists a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. That figure is the base component, not a flat total for every transaction: a transaction with one charged signature and no priority fee has a 5,000-lamport base fee, while one with more charged signatures has a larger base component. The documented figure is current in Solana’s fee documentation reviewed in 2026 and can change if protocol parameters change. Solana’s fee structure.

The protocol fee is charged whether a transaction succeeds or fails. Solana allocates 50% of the base fee to be burned and 50% to the validator; the prioritization fee, if any, goes entirely to the validator. These are network fees, distinct from any wallet or application charge, exchange trading fee, swap price impact, or balance requirement. The cited protocol documentation does not establish whether a particular wallet or application adds its own charge.

What is a priority fee, and how is it calculated?

A priority fee is optional. It can increase the likelihood that the current leader schedules a transaction ahead of competing transactions, but it is not a promise of inclusion or a particular confirmation time.

Legacy and v0 transactions

For legacy and v0 transactions, the priority fee is calculated from the requested compute-unit price and compute-unit limit:

Priority fee in lamports = ceil(compute-unit price × requested compute-unit limit ÷ 1,000,000)

The default compute-unit price is zero. The fee uses the requested limit, not just the compute units ultimately consumed, so setting an unnecessarily high limit can raise the priority fee. Solana’s fee documentation describes this calculation.

v1 transactions

Solana documents a different method for v1 transactions: the message configuration specifies the priority fee as an absolute lamport total rather than deriving it from a per-compute-unit price and limit. Solana’s terminology page says v1 is active on all clusters. Check how the wallet or application presents a fee rather than assuming the legacy/v0 formula applies to every transaction format.

Should you add a priority fee?

The practical choice is between leaving the compute-unit price at its zero default or paying an optional amount for a greater chance of priority scheduling. Consider the urgency of the transaction and the added cost. A larger priority fee does not establish a specific wait time, and the documentation does not say that any particular fee guarantees faster confirmation.

For developers estimating a priority fee, Solana’s fee reference lists Helius, QuickNode, and Triton among services that provide real-time compute-unit price estimates. Those estimates inform a fee choice; they do not turn it into a confirmation-time guarantee. Solana’s fee reference.

Why might a transaction take longer than expected?

There is no universal user-specific confirmation time established by the cited documentation. Solana defines “confirmation time” as the wall-clock duration from when a leader creates a tick entry to when it creates a confirmed block. That definition is not a promise that an individual transaction will be confirmed within a fixed number of seconds. The cited sources also do not establish a network-wide average or distribution of actual user wait times.

A priority fee addresses scheduling likelihood, not certainty or a clock. If a transaction appears to be taking longer than expected, distinguish its current status from the fee paid: a priority fee cannot by itself prove that the transaction has been included, confirmed, or finalized.

Confirmed and finalized are different statuses

Solana describes a confirmed block as one that has received a supermajority of ledger votes. Finality represents stronger network agreement: the terminology glossary defines it by two-thirds of stake sharing a common root, and says a transaction is finalized when its block becomes a root. Solana’s terminology glossary.

In short, “confirmed” and “finalized” are not synonyms. When checking a transaction, use the status shown by the wallet or explorer and understand which state it represents; confirmation alone should not be described as finality.
