The Silver Institute reported a price above $121 on January 29, 2026; LBMA’s benchmark high was $118.450. By the end of June, LBMA silver was $58.795—more than 50% below the January peak. That sequence makes silver a volatile diversifier, not an automatic buy. A supply deficit can support a long-term case, but it cannot prevent crowded positioning, demand destruction or a severe drawdown.
The record was followed by an unusually large drawdown
Different benchmarks produce slightly different record prices, but they show the same risk: anyone buying near the high faced a rapid loss.
| Period or measure | Reported silver price or change | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| January 29, 2026 | Above $121, according to the Silver Institute | Silver’s reported nominal record |
| January 29, 2026 | $118.450, LBMA high | The LBMA benchmark record |
| March 23, 2026 | $67.230, LBMA low | The Q1 low after the January peak |
| Q1 2026 | 76.19% high-to-low range, LBMA | The quarter’s extreme volatility |
| End of Q2 2026 | $58.795, after a 21.47% quarterly decline | More than 50% below the January peak |
| 2026 quarterly comparison | About +55% in Q1 and -11% in Q2, World Bank | How quickly the direction changed |
These are not ordinary fluctuations for a supposedly defensive holding. They show why a short-term prediction can be wrong even when the underlying supply story remains supportive.
What drove silver’s spike
A physical-market liquidity squeeze
The Silver Institute said falling inventories, metal moving into CME vaults, rising exchange-traded-product holdings, and stronger bar and coin demand tightened available liquidity in October 2025. London liquidity was also described as tight. When readily deliverable metal becomes scarce while investors are adding exposure, a relatively small change in buying can move the quoted price sharply.

Investor flows and an uncertain macro backdrop
Exchange-traded-product inflows and physical investment added financial demand to industrial consumption. Geopolitical risk, uncertainty over U.S. policy and expectations about Federal Reserve independence encouraged investors to seek assets outside traditional financial markets. The dollar, interest-rate expectations and inflation repeatedly influence silver’s short-term price discovery, so a favorable or unfavorable macro shift can overwhelm a supply argument for months at a time.
Momentum amplified the move
Once silver broke into record territory, rising prices themselves attracted attention from traders and buyers of bars and coins. That feedback can work in reverse: a retreat prompts profit-taking, reduces urgency among physical buyers and forces leveraged positions to close. The fall from January through June is evidence that a tight market can still unwind abruptly.

Why a supply deficit does not guarantee a profit
The 2026 deficit is meaningful, but not a timing signal
The Silver Institute forecasts a 46.3 million-ounce deficit in 2026, the sixth consecutive annual deficit. It also expects mine production to remain broadly stable. That combination supports the idea that the market needs higher prices or other adjustments over time, but it does not specify when those adjustments will occur. Prices can overshoot in both directions before a long-run shortage thesis plays out.
Industrial demand is splitting into winners and losers
Artificial-intelligence infrastructure, data centers, vehicles and electricity grids are areas where silver use remains supportive. Solar manufacturing is different: producers are accelerating “thrifting” (using less silver per cell) and substitution with other materials as prices rise.

After four years of growth, industrial demand fell 3% to 657.4 million ounces in 2025. For 2026, the Silver Institute expects industrial fabrication to decline about 2% to roughly 650 million ounces. A deficit can therefore coexist with falling consumption in price-sensitive applications.
High prices are already pressuring discretionary buyers
The same price that attracts investors makes jewelry and silverware less affordable. The Silver Institute forecasts jewelry demand to fall more than 9% to 178 million ounces in 2026 and silverware demand to fall about 17%. Those declines do not erase the deficit, but they show how demand can respond before new mine supply arrives.

Investment demand can support prices—and then reverse
Physical investment is forecast to rise 20% to a three-year high of 227 million ounces in 2026. That buying can tighten the market, yet it is also sensitive to sentiment, premiums and household budgets. If inflows slow or investors sell, the support disappears faster than a mine can be expanded.

Define its role before choosing an entry point
Silver is better treated as a diversifier than as a core savings vehicle. Set a maximum allocation that would not force you to sell after a drawdown on the scale documented in 2026. Keep emergency savings and near-term spending money outside the position; a volatile commodity is a poor match for a fixed financial deadline.

Match the horizon to the risk
Short-term buyers are making a market-timing decision exposed to dollar moves, interest rates, inflation expectations, geopolitics and investor positioning. A longer-term allocation still requires monitoring industrial substitution, recycling, mine output and physical demand. Neither horizon removes risk; the longer one simply gives supply and demand more time to adjust.
Compare the main ways to get exposure
| Vehicle | Price exposure | Liquidity and direct costs | Risks beyond silver’s price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coins and bars | Spot price plus the dealer premium or discount | Dealer spreads, storage, insurance and verification; selling may take time | Counterfeit or authenticity concerns and the possibility that premiums collapse |
| Exchange-traded products | Designed to track silver less fees, but tracking can differ | Usually exchange-traded with visible bid-ask spreads | Structure, custody and tracking risks; market price can diverge from underlying metal |
| Mining shares | Potentially leveraged exposure to the metal price | Trade like equities | Company execution, energy costs, financing, jurisdiction and operational risk |
Choose the vehicle whose risks you understand, not simply the one with the most exciting recent return. Physical metal adds possession costs; an exchange-traded product adds fund and market-structure considerations; a miner is a business rather than a bar of silver.
Buy coins now, wait, or buy in stages?
No source establishes a reliable near-term price target, so a decision should not depend on guessing the next exact low.
- Buying now: only makes sense if the allocation is small enough to withstand a large decline and you have a long holding period. Check the all-in premium, the dealer’s buyback spread and storage arrangements before paying.
- Waiting: preserves cash and may reduce the risk of buying into another crowded surge, but silver can rise while you wait. Set a written valuation or allocation rule rather than an emotional target.
- Staging purchases: divides the entry into scheduled amounts, reducing the impact of one bad day. It does not guarantee a lower average price and can underperform a single purchase if the market rises immediately.
For physical buyers, compare several dealers, keep invoices and verify the product. For any vehicle, decide in advance what loss would make you sell and whether that loss would undermine another financial goal.
Indicators worth monitoring
- Physical liquidity: inventories, metal flows into exchange vaults, London availability and bar-and-coin premiums.
- Investor positioning: exchange-traded-product holdings and the pace of physical investment, which can reverse.
- Industrial use: fabrication volumes, solar silver intensity, automotive and grid demand, and substitution.
- Supply response: mine production, recycling and whether the projected deficit narrows.
- Macro conditions: the U.S. dollar, interest rates, inflation expectations, geopolitical risk and U.S. policy uncertainty.
A deficit that persists while industrial use, investor flows and physical liquidity remain firm is a stronger long-term setup than a deficit alone. Conversely, falling fabrication and shrinking investment demand can pressure prices even before mine supply changes.
